In TTT when Gollum is leading the hobbits through the dead marshes, sam says "there are dead things, dead faces in the water". And then gollum says "all dead, all roten, efls, men , and orcs" then he says, "a great battle long ago". well I was wondering what battle was that. I know it must have been in the silmarilion.

the marshes originally lied between the wetlands of anduin and the gagorlad battle plain. in year 3434 of the second age, the battle of dorgorlad was held, it was when the last alliance of men and elves overthrew saurons army before destorying barad dur and the black gate
the marhses spread and swallowed up many of the graves of the men and elves and orcs who died in that war, as well as some of the graves of men and elves and orcs from other wars fought on that land, including many wars fought between gondor and the easterling barbarians, and battles with the easterlings called the waintriders(1899 and 1944 of third age).
so, actually its not from one war, but its mainly from the battle of dagorlad

A lot of the bodies were from the battle just BEFORE the battle that was in the prologue of the Fellowship film. That battle when Sauron was defeated, and the ring cut from his hand was about 7 years (Barad-Dur was besieged for a LONG time) after the battle in which the people died in what was to become the Dead Marshes, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, it was soooo creepy! The part where the body opens its eyes was just freaky! Thanks for asking that question, Morgothian. I've been wondering about it.

Was anyone else reminded of Indiana Jones and the Temple Doom during the scene where Frodo falls in the water?
The part where the Nazis open the Ark of the Covenant and the ghosts/spirits are flying around sort of grabbing at the soldiers?
