View Full Version : Favorite Elven Race?

Voroturiön

What is your most favorite Elven Race and why?

For me it is the Noldor. They embody everything good in the Elves for me. Loremasters, Warriors, and Kings amoung their Kin.

Oh, come on! Doesn't anyone want to vote in my poll?

You forgot the Nandorin Elves. Just kidding. Guess which group I voted for? :p

I've gone for the Sindar:) They seemed more reachable and less reckless-however I'm not saying i dont like the onther elves too (just so you know)

I voted Noldor ... they are the most dramatic. They seem more 'human' and also more extreme both in their gifts and in their faults.

The Moriquendi. I haven't finished reading the Sil, but I found the dark-elves, especially the Avari, very intriguing!

I voted Sindar. I liked the Noldor, too, but they are mostly too prideful. The Sindar seem more down-to-earth.

I like the Noldor, Vanyar, and Sindar. Noldoli are my favorite of them all, though they were a bit proud. I love high kings such as Fingolfin, Finrod, and Turgon! :)

Noldor. I always go with the Noldor! ;) lol

I love *deep breath* Finwe, Feanor, his seven sons, Fingon, Turgon, Gil-galad (especially Gil-galad!), Finrod and Galadriel. Theirs are the most interesting stories, IMHO, and their deeds and acts, while frequently misguided and unwise, are enthralling...

Mmm. Noldor... ;)

I voted for the Vanyar!!!! They were the only one of them could be found in Middle-Earth and that was Turgon's wife who perished. They were smart enough to get to Valinor and smart enough to stay.

Gil Galad
April 7th,2003, 05:17 PM
definitly the Vanyar, the way they kicked Morgoths *** at the end of the third age, and i love the house of Fingolfin because they have Noldor and Vanyar blood in them

Lasgalen
April 7th,2003, 10:34 PM
I don't think Vanyar could have kicked Morgoth's butt without the help of the Noldor and the Valar.

-Lasgalen

Gil Galad
April 8th,2003, 09:01 AM
but the noldor took little part in it, only a few of them remained in Aman, so they cud not have had a great bearing, and none of the noldor of middle earth took part in that war. and there is no mention of any of the Valar taking part either, only the herald of Manwe. but also the noldor were arrogant

Algamesh
April 9th,2003, 04:58 AM
I have to go with the Noldor. They were the ones who strove for adventure and created the epics through success and failure.

Lasgalen
April 9th,2003, 07:39 AM
It is true that the Silmarillion would have been rather short without the Noldor, but there are some tales of the Sindarin Elves in there, too. So I still go for the Sindar

The NOldor were too proud(or grew too proud) in my opinion

Lalaith
April 10th,2003, 06:45 PM
Well, all Elves are proud to some degree - the Sindar were: remember Thingol's reaction to news that the Noldor had returned to Beleriand? Thranduil comes across as quite arrogant in 'The Hobbit'

Eol, the Dark Elf, was no Noldo yet he was horribly proud, and very agressive towards the Noldor.

The Vanyar were certainly not above pride although they are really the Highest of all Elves, so perhaps it's not surprising!

Still, I stand by my choice of the Noldor - theirs are the most thrilling stories. Perhaps it's their weaknesses and failings that make them most compelling, but I'll always have a soft spot for them! :)

Lasgalen
April 10th,2003, 07:54 PM
Maybe the Vanyar were proud, too. We don't know. Not much was written about them because they mostly sat at Manwes feet in Valinor.

-Lasgalen

Gil Galad
April 11th,2003, 09:06 AM
yes they sat at his feet, and didnt love their possesions too much. well yeh the sindar were also proud, but Thingol had reason to be proud, he was one of those that awoke by the twilight mere of cuivinien, he allone of all the children of Ilvuatat was joined with one of the Maia, he seen the Two Trees in there prime and he ruled a great kingdom. i dont think it was pride that drove Eol to his hatred, i think it was more his distrust towardsd those who had slain his kin, and taken vaste lands, that they had abandoned years b4, to be ther own

Do you mean the Teleri who were left on Tol Eressea? The Sindar, or Gray Elves, are of the Teleri, too. They just didn't make it off Middle Earth.

Lasgalen
January 3rd,2004, 08:00 AM
That is why I voted for the Sindar. Because they are the same race as the Teleri and I think the Teleri were pretty cool with their ships and living by the ocean. I like the ocean.

Glorfindel
January 3rd,2004, 12:32 PM
Indeed - the armies of the Valar existed out of Vanyar, maybe a couple of Noldor and Teleri, but lets say 99% of them were Vanyar.

And Gil Galad... it was the war of Grief at the end of the First Age ;)

Gil Galad

Come on people. Silvan Elves are definitly the best. They bore the brunt of Morgoth's attacks until the Noldor came. Even then Doriath remained safe while the Noldor waged their fruitless war.

Gil Galad
January 8th,2004, 06:44 PM
but that was only because of Melian, (ok credit where credits due, fair play to Thingol for snaggin such a catch)but it was her and not Silvan Elves, for the most part, that kept Doriath safe

Ecthelion

Ecthelion
January 23rd,2004, 06:16 PM
One second. Explain the difference.

Glorfindel
January 23rd,2004, 07:49 PM
Well, both Silvan and Sindarin Elves are subdivisions of the Teleri.
The Sindar were the people of Thingol Singollo (=Greycloack). They were called after Thingol. (I checked it, and Doriath was a Sindarin realm :))
The Silvan were also known as Wood-Elves, or those of the same origin as Legolas and his kin, or as many of the people of Lórien. They were originally those of the Clan of the Teleri who abandonned the Clan east of the Mountains and settled in the region of the Anduin and the Misty Mountains.

Lasgalen
January 25th,2004, 08:20 AM
There are several branches of the Teleri. In addition to those already mentioned, there was also the Nandor. It all depends on at what point they left the migration to Valinor. Each time a group broke off and decided to remain in middle-earth, they were called a different name. So the Nandor split off earlier, and then the Sindarin split off a little later, but both came from the Teleri.

Gwaihir
January 25th,2004, 09:30 AM
Very true, Las. :) The Teleri were the last and the largest group of the Three Kindreds of the Eldar, so no wonder why they just split up and went different ways!

The Silvan Elves were not of the Eldar... they were good people but were not as powerful or as wise as them.

Glorfindel
January 25th,2004, 10:55 AM

The Noldor. Mostly because the coolest and bravest Elf in existence was one of the Noldor: Fingolfin! The only one who dared take Morgoth on in single combat, and nearly succeeded.

Eomund
January 26th,2004, 03:35 PM
Fingolfin is the best elf ever lived from Noldor (as i think.).

Miriel Baggins
February 1st,2004, 01:55 AM
Well, my favorite Elves are the Teleri, which would include the Sindar and the Silvan Elves. I think the Vanyar are really boring --- sitting there singing all day; and the Moriquendi aren't talked of much. And the Noldor . . . I dunno, somehow the Teleri just appealed to me more. Even though Fingolfin is my favorite Elf. (Along with Galadriel.) The Noldor were a bit too much like Men. I mean, compared with Men, they weren't, but compared to the other Elves, they were. And I hated Feanor, and he's what's called to my mind when I think of the Noldor.

I guess I'd basically have to say: my favorite race, the Teleri; the race with my favorite Elves in it, the Noldor. Go figure. :)

I think that Miriel thinks the Vanyar are boring because they do not appear much in the Sil. They were wise and noble, and did not leave Aman for the love of the Valar. :) I like them for what they are.

Eomund
February 1st,2004, 04:41 PM
But still Vanyars deafeated Melkor. And whats bad about singing.

Miriel Baggins
February 2nd,2004, 12:03 AM
lol Good point. But Gwaihir's right: they just weren't mentioned enough in the Sil to get me interested in them. And, although I have nothing against singing (I'm in two choirs, and I love it), it's not much fun to sit there and watch a bunch of beautiful Elves doing it all day, if you know what I mean. :) But, I'd forgotten that they helped to defeat Morgoth. So, on second thought, I'll have to say that, though boring most of the time, they are pretty cool. But not my favorites.

Gwaihir
February 2nd,2004, 06:30 AM
And don't forget the fact that Finwe's second wife Indis was of the Vanyar, and that their son Finarfin and Finarfin's children Finrod and Galadriel had golden hair because of their ancestry. :) They were also wise and gentle.

So the Vanyar did have a little influence in Middle-Earth. ;)

Eomund

Id say a big influence for even the relations but they saved Beleriand.

Uilos
February 2nd,2004, 03:23 PM
Since the first time I read The Silmarillion, the Noldor attracts me the most. Maybe it's because my favourite elves are Feanor and Fingolfin and the they [Noldor] appear in the book most of all.

Eomund
February 2nd,2004, 04:04 PM
in that i think youre wrong, sivan and sindarin appear also as much as noldors.

Ecthelion
February 2nd,2004, 06:29 PM
Definitly. The Vanyar are the least.

Eomund
February 2nd,2004, 07:30 PM
Are they? I think the Darkness Elves are more less than them.

Ecthelion
February 3rd,2004, 06:06 PM
I dont know. The Vanyar only appear at the beginning and at the end. The Moriquendi are sprinkled throughout.

Eomund
February 3rd,2004, 06:10 PM
yes, right! But the wood or green elves?

Ecthelion
February 3rd,2004, 06:19 PM
Aren't they the same? I get so confused.

Mirkgirl
February 3rd,2004, 08:58 PM
Not the same, but a part of them... the Moriquendi are all the elves who never saw the light of the threes.. and green and wood elves are part of that group (:

Eomund
February 4th,2004, 08:01 PM
their so many bloody elves, sindarin, silvan, vanyar, noldor, wood-elves, and i think thats only few of them.

Ecthelion

So Moriquendi is like a name for both groups?

What's the difference between the grey and green?

Gwaihir
February 5th,2004, 01:13 PM
The Gray Elves are the Sindar, those of the Teleri who lived in Beleriand and did not complete the Great Journey.
The Green Elves are the Laiquendi, the remnant of the Nandor who remained in Ossiriand.

Your Silmarillion book should contain a few pages of family trees and such that includes the division of the Elves, including the Moriquendi and the Eldar.

Eomund
February 5th,2004, 02:35 PM
true, but my silm's name register is freaked up !

Glorfindel
February 5th,2004, 05:09 PM
Well Eomund, to complete your little list :p :

Quendi
Eldar
Avari
Vanyar
Noldor
Teleri
Calaquendi
Sindar
Silvan
Nandor
Laiquendi
Úlmanyar
Moriquendi

:p

Eomund
February 5th,2004, 05:31 PM
Sorry but who were Slmanyar and Avari

Glorfindel
February 5th,2004, 05:47 PM
The Avari were the Elves who didn't answer the call of the Valar to come to Aman at all; none of them went on the Great Journey

Úmanyar were the "Eldar not of Valinor". The Úmanyar consist of the Nandor and the Sindar

Eomund
February 5th,2004, 05:49 PM
Am i right, Calaquendi where the elves that saw the light of the two trees.
Noldors and vanyars completed the journey.
Quendi also.
Sindar had the island near Valinor.

Lady Ashley
February 5th,2004, 05:53 PM
I like all the Elven groups EXCEPT for the Noldor. (Only a few exceptions.) It's the Noldor's fault for the Wars of Beleriand.

Eomund
February 5th,2004, 05:55 PM
Who are the few exeptions? I like Fingolfin.

Glorfindel
February 5th,2004, 06:00 PM
Erm... not everything is correct.

Quendi is the name for all Elves of all races, of all clans.
Then you have the Eldar (those who began the Great Journey) and the Avari (those who didn't start the Great Journey).

In the Eldar, there are three Clans. The Vanyar and Noldor completed the Great Jorney, all of them went to Valinor. The third Clan is the Clan of the Teleri. A very big part of the Teleri went to Aman, but two times a host went their own way. Those two groups are the Úmanyar. The first of those groups were the Nandor (they left before they crossed the Misty Mountains), the second group the Sindar (they lived in Beleriand, ruled by Thingol).
The Calaquendi are the Vanyar, the Noldor and the part of the Teleri who went to Valinor.

The Laiquendi were those of the Nandor who travelled to Beleriand in later times.

Then the Moriquendi. The Moriquendi were the Avari and the Úmanyar.

I hope this clears things up? :)

Eomund
February 5th,2004, 06:09 PM
aw, now i know them all. But who ruled where. Ingwe the vanyars and thingol the sindar.

Glorfindel
February 5th,2004, 07:55 PM
Aw... again a difficult question.. All of them had heir own leaders, and when one died someone else replaced them.
Ingwë was the leader of the Vanyar, as you said, and he was the High King of the Elves.
The leader of the Noldor (in Aman) was Finwë. He was killed by Morgoth. After Finwë, Finarfin became King of the Noldor in Aman, and Fingon became High King of the Noldor in Beleriand. But he was killed too. Then you have Finrod Felagund (Nargothrond), Orodreth (Nargothrond), Turgon (Nevrast & Gondolin), Fingolfin (Hithlum). Then you have Fëanor's sons (Maedros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod, Amras) and Gil-galad (son of Fingon). And Angrod and Aegnos (sons of Finarfin). Those were the Noldorin leaders, all of them had their own lands in Beleriand.
Non-Noldorin leaders: Cirdan (in the Havens of Beleriand and later the Grey Havens), Thingol of the Sindar (Doriath), Dior (Doriath).

Of course you have the later realms like Rivendell, Mirkwood, Lothlorien, ... the leaders above ruled in the First Age.

Eomund
February 5th,2004, 08:00 PM
yes, i didnt even remember that there was a high-king of Elves.

Glorfindel
February 5th,2004, 08:12 PM
Well you know now lol

Ecthelion
February 6th,2004, 04:59 AM
So do you think the different groups of elves were actually... different than other groups or was it just to distinguish where they lived or what they did?

Mirkgirl
February 6th,2004, 11:02 AM
Well... the Teleri loved the sea, the Vanyar had golden hair and loves songs and such, the Noldor loved crafts and had dark hair... and they mostly lived the same place (Valinor) but they chose to do different things... the elves who didn't see the light of the trees (and didn't interact with the Valar which is more important after all) of course were different than the groups mentioned above... the Sindar lived protected by the Girdle of Melian and "tasted" some of the greatness of Valinor through her... the Nandor didn't have such opportunity...

I don't know if this answers your Q...

Eomund
February 6th,2004, 05:34 PM
I wanted to ask something almost same. but anyway if the Vanyar loved sining and that kind of stuff, but am i wrong that all elves loved singing.

Mirkgirl
February 6th,2004, 08:39 PM
Well I mostly said that because I couldn't think of anything better to say... they were the favourites of Manwe and Varda and they grow to love Valinor really much, moved closer to Manwe and forgot ME completely, which the Noldor didn't and that's why they eventually followed Feanor. I always took them as the source of Galadriel's golden hair and thought no futher to be honest ;)

Eomund
February 6th,2004, 08:41 PM
oH YES, TRUE. bUT DIDNT THE sINDARIN HAVE GOLDEN HAIR ALSO?

Mirkgirl
February 6th,2004, 09:06 PM
Nope. Thranduil was an exception. Legolas's haircolor is not mentioned in the book.

Eomund
February 6th,2004, 09:08 PM
Wasnt it? I thought that in the first part.

Mirkgirl
February 6th,2004, 09:28 PM
No. Actually there is one passage that suggests that his hair was dark.
"The Great River" FotR LotR
Frodo looked up at the Elf standing tall above him, as he gazed into the night, seeking a mark to shoot at. His head was dark, crowned with sharp white stars that glittered in the black pools of the sky behind Of course that might simply mean that his head was hard to see due to the darkness... but somehow I think that if Tolkien meant blonde he'd say that his hair was glittering in the dark or something like that

Eomund
February 6th,2004, 09:39 PM
Yuore probably right.

Mirkgirl
February 7th,2004, 05:28 PM
Well honestly I'm not sure. But it makes sense as it's Finwe's second wife, Indis who brought the golden hair in the family and Fingolfin is her son. Galadriel is Finarfin (his brother's) daughter after all.

Eomund
February 8th,2004, 10:01 AM
So sad that happened to Fingolfin...

David D
February 8th,2004, 10:08 AM
Fingolfin did not have golden hair. He had black hair lik his father. The only reason that one of his descedents Idril had blonde hair was due to the fact that Turgon married a Vanyar.

Eomund
