I love this series! The dragons are so vividly described, and once I got started into the first book, Dragonflight, I was hooked. So far I have read up to Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern.
Has anyone else here read this awesome series?

Yes. They are good. I haven't read Moreta yet, but enjoyed the others. A better book, I thought, was Crystal Singer also by McCaffrey.

I agree with Catz, the first ones I was really excited about reading but I tapered off after the 4th, I think. I'll check out Ship Who Sang - thanks for the tip! :)

Dragonflight was my fave too. I thought that Dragonquest wasn't as good for some reason, and I prefer the dragons to the fire lizards, who seem to be a lot more mischevious. I want to read The Ship Who Sang too, it sounds like an interesting concept.

Yes, I saw your sig too Lessa, and immediately realised why you are called Lessa, and your signature being from Dragonriders of Pern lol
They're great reads, I recommend them to anyone. They're kind of a mix between fantasy and science fiction...

Well I have a Dragonriders of Pern book with three of the series bound together. I haven't read it yet as I am busy reading other books. But I shall! *grins*

I recommend it, Em. I'm sure you'll love them! My fave dragons have to be the blues, I don't know why but something just draws me to them... I also loved the exploration of the Southern Continent and especially when they found the spaceship...that was so tense, a real page-turner!

Mt friend Matt and I have talked long and learnedly of how far we'd have to move the table saw to fit a dragon in my garage. He wants a bronze, I want a queen, which might turn out interestingly. Sorry.

Me again. The Ship Who Sang was also wonderful. I told my mother about it, or started to, but she was so repulsed by the idea of shell-people that she couldn't be talked to the rest of the day.

I quite like the idea of shell people. I think if I had such a problem I'd want to go into a shell if I was able. Just think of the things you could do that others couldn't. An amazing concept.

I love Anne Mccaffrey. hehehe She is one of my favorite authors. So far I've read, Dragon Singer, Dragon Song, Dragon Drums, Dinosaur Planet, Nerilka's Story, Dragonsdawn, The Renegades of Pern, Dragon Flight, Dragon Quest, The White Dragon, and Sassinak.

What are the Shell people?

If you like Anne McCaffrey then you need to read Crystal Singer. It is really good. I liked it even better than the Dragonrider books.

The shell people are those who were born with terrible disabilities. As infants they are put into little shells to sustain their lives. Instead of normal senses they use electrical circuits which as they grow get much more complex. When they reach their late teens these are so complex that they can actually drive space ships at great speeds and computate the necessary quantum mathematics in minutes instead of days or months in order to navigate around the galaxy, in weeks instead of days. Some go on the be city or other managers taking care of the necessities this entails easier than an army of civil servants.

Thank you for the explanation, Lessa. The shell people sound very sad. But I suppose I'll have to read the books for a clearer understanding.

Oh no they aren't sad they think Softshells like us are the ones to be pitied as they are so limited.
You would definitely understand better when you read the books though.

I don't really have a favorite... just read any one that I come across. I prefer McCaffrey's other works though, like Crystal Singer and also the series with the telepaths (can't remember what it's called) especially the 2nd book, Damia.

I just recently read the last one she had published THE SKIES OF PERN. She kind of left the story in cliffhanger mode . I had also heard that two years ago that some network was going to do a television series of the books. Does anyone know why it did not get made?

:whoohoo: Thanks, Lessa. That's a really cool website. I am going to go on there more often. I first read her books in junior high school. I was introduced to Pern through THE HARPERHALL TRILOGY.

You're welcome! I've only been reading her books for about 10 yrs. If I remember correctly I saw one of her books on a second hand book stall on the local market and thought I try it. I haven't looked back since and have read most of her sci-fi books.
