View Full Version : Changes for the better?

There has been a lot of talk about the changes PJ made to TT that were awful, but I was just wondering if there were any changes that you thought were an IMPROVEMENT from the book (or changes that you liked if you wouldn't go so far as to say they were an "improvement").
I'll give you a few of mine. First of all I liked the wag attack. I know it wasn't in TT, but the Fellowship was attacked by wargs in the book. Plus we get to see some really great action sequences because of it, so I'm all for it! :)
I also liked the elves going to Helm's Deep. It was a very poignant moment (especially when you see the look of pride on Legolas' face in his people for coming to join in the fight).
I also (gosh I hate to say I "liked" this), but I thought Haldir's death was the singlemost shocking, moving, and heartbreaking moment that I have ever seen in a movie. Amazing.
Anyway, I'll post a poll to give you some options, but let me know what you think! If there was a "change" that I missed, tell me about it!

The Elves going to Helms Deep.
But although some of us fans here think it was too much, as the elves had absolutly nothing to do with the campain in Rohan, It was a nice assest to the film becuase the people who have not read the books would of loved the ldea of Elves coming to help there freinds and turn the tides of the battle becuase lets face it everyone loves Elves in someway or another:thumbs:

I voted for wargs attack and elves going to helm's deep. Those were great! Haldir's death scene was sad but touching.
I thought Faramir's character change was quite ridiculous though.

I didn't like any of them, except maybe Eomer showing up in the end. Elves should not have come to Helms Deep, and there shouldn't have been a warg attack which was not all that necessary. I guess they just wanted more action.

I've always liked the idea of Elves at Helm's Deep. It goes along well with Haldir's speech, "An alliance once existed between Elves and Men. We've come to honour that tradition." Also, the Elvish commands were a nice touch. Leithio, i phillin! Cool line.

Didn't the charge down the hill happen in the book? Oh well, I voted for it anyway, its such a cool cinematic moment

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the charge down the hill is in the book.
I liked the Warg Attack. I thought it added some much-needed action to the middle of the story. Also, I think Tolkien mentions that they had to fend off attacks on the way to HD, but he didn't describe them. Seems only natural to expand on that point if it makes for a good sequence.
What I did NOT like were some aspects of that attack - ie, Aragorn's fall, Gimli getting trapped under the Wargs, etc.

Yes, it did, but in the book Éomer was at HD the entire time, but PJ decided to let him charge down the hill with Gandalf.
To be honest I had forgotten that the "charge" DID occur in the book, but I recently re-read that part, and I thought it was great that PJ put it into the movie (he would be crazy not to. It's such a beautiful moment). The description of this passage in the book is very much like what you see in the movie. So cool!

I agree with the comments made by those who like to see the Elves at Helm's Deep. It was a beautiful moment when they came. Very inspiring, and their presence gave hope to the defenders of Helm's Deep. The elven army was also smart, impressive and majestic. Besides that, I like the Lothlorien March theme as the elves were marching in. Therefore, this is my favourite change that PJ has made for the movie.
As for the death of Haldir, I think it was sad and heart-wrenching and I also think it was a truly beautiful scene.
I also voted for the warg attack - nice action sequences and Eomer charging down the hillslope with Gandalf. This charging scene was also very inspiring.

Two other good Elvish phrases Aragorn says are the one where he says, "Show them no mercy, for they will show them none," and when he tells the Elves to arm themselves. Unfortunately, I can't find the exact Elvish phrases.

I believe the phrase you're looking for is "A Eruchîn, ú-dano i faelas a hyn an uben tanatha le faelas."

I loved the charge down the hill at Helm's Deep, but I thing Eomer was cheated out of a lot of screen time by not showing up until the end. It was a great moment, though.

I think all the changes were fine the warg attack was cool it would have seemed strange if they made it to Helms Deep with no resistance at all. At the Elfs were fine it made it better I think. and the end was great teh big charge down the hill, O I love the part so much very well done.

I would have liked the Warg attack scene had it not have Aragorn falling down the cliff and "dying"... that was not necessary at all...(unless you wanted to show more Arwen scenes... pfbbt :mmmm:
but i voted on the Eomer charging down the hill with Gandalf...it was a great cinematic end... the elves coming too was cool too...i mean Rohan was so outnumbered and inexperienced...they need SOME experienced fighters not to mention an addition in numbers of fighters.

OK....trout me if you will, but I LIKED Faramir. He did not want the ring for himself, as Boromir did, but just for his people, in an attempt to save them. He knew he could not handle it, but maybe his father could. Remember how powerful Denethor was, and how desperate for his love was Faramir. The book Faramir was wonderful, but hey...let's not kid ourselves. Can you say TOO GOOD??? Everyone was tempted at some point, even Aragorn. PJ made Faramir just a little more human, and more vulnerable. Taking Frodo to Osgiliath simply reduced the time in ROTK that PJ needed to spend getting the ring that far. Remember, he only has a small amount of time, and Frodo and Sam walking from Ithilien to Osgiliath and Cirith Ungol would have wasted a lot of time. I know this is not a reason to make such a drastic change, but it worked. Sauron knew Frodo had the ring, and assumed it would go to Gondor. Frodo's showing the Nazgul the ring certainly did nothing to endanger the quest, and it showed a different aspect to Faramir. Give the poor guy some credit. He felt he had to do something to win Denethor's love, and that's how the ring works...find a weakness and exploit it.

I only liked the warg attack from that list although they made to much out of it, the whole Aragorn almost dyin thing was just silly. And I didn’t like the way Eomer came at the end, he should av been there already cos it showed how noble he was by returnin to the king after the fight wit the uruks even tho he knew he'd b arrested.I wont even mention the elves in helms deep.Grrrrrrrrrr. And as for Faramir goin, he was the way he was in the book to show that he wasn’t lik his bro and that there was stranght left in the race of men.
