What I always wonder is why in the entire book - even before Frodo gets the ring I'm sure - Sam refers to Frodo as MR. FRODO and not just frodo, as Frodo just calls Sam by name? Does Sam se him as an elder? Wiser? Stronger? I thought I knew - but I do believe sam called frodo that before their journey began. I was wondering if any of you knew exactly why Sam gave such a great respect to Frodo in the first place? but not in the way of a friendship - something else....hmmm. What makes Frodo the master?

Sam: What orders from Gandalf my Lord? *bows low*notworthy

Frodo::king:

Yeah, this is almost being rude questioning my favorite character, but I HAD to know!

Sam was Frodos gardener....a servant and working class, whereas Frodo was middle class and an intellectual, by Hobbit standards....thats it in a nutshell

catz has hit the bullseye here.

JRRT wrote these stories in mind of a caste system which separated the citizens based upon social status. Although Tolkien presents this in the best light possible, the actual division in social class which he alludes to wasn't so chummy.

There are essays on this ... if I locate one I'll reference the information here.
