yes...god yes...they were my favourite books for about 5 years...i read the first one when i was about 8 and have read all of them at least 10 times each...i always wanted to be a vet and they had quite a lot of detail about the work as well as comedy...i really loved them and thought that tristan was such a great character...he really reminds me of myself!!

I've read them and re-read them, in fact, I read all of them at least once every couple of years. In addition to the 3 original, "Bright and Beautiful," "Wise and Wonderfu" and "Great and Small, " there was fourth book called "The Lord God Made Them All," which was my favorite by far, as his daughter started doing his rounds with him. Also, one Christmas, my mother gifted me with another treasure "James Herriot's Yorkshire," which is a picture biography of Herriot himself, Skeldale House, and the farms and countryside he visited on a daily basis.

As far as my favorite character, I have to say it would be the exuberant, overly-indulgent, fantastically generous Granville Bennett....poor James!!

I still have the page from People magazine when they profiled him after his death....a fantastic writer...one of the few authors I would have loved to have met personally.

I had a huge crush on the guy playing Tristan in the tv series! He was one of the Doctors Who, too. Can't remember his name, now, but I had it pretty bad for him. :loveyou:

Oh, yeah , I read the books, too

I managed to catch the show on TV a couple times....I had a bit of a literary crush on Tristan myself....anyone who could pull off a Rayne's ghost impersonation was tops...but I was severely disappointed by the guy who played him in the series....not my idea of a proper Tristan at all...hehehehe

I thought Tristan in the series pulled off the character very nicely, tho, as always, something to be desired whenever there's an adaptation. tho, saying that...i did start watching the blasted things ever since i was a wee tot, so i'm sure there's a little bit of a bias. oh, and btw, the books are lovely, but rot when it comes to the war. at least thats what i thought when i was 12...maybe time to reread ;)

I haven't read them myself but my mam has all of the books he's wrote. There's an old series on too that's based on the book "All Creatures Great and Small."

i searched all over the web and couldn't find any pictures fomr the series....i should just buy the DVD i guess! lol would save a lot of trouble!!

i found the rest of the books last night so i spent the morning reading "if only they could talk". I think it might be my favourite one.....its the first one and describes seigfred and everything (i still can't spell that name!) really well....

Oh, I loved James Herriott's books when I was younger! I read them all repeatedly...

I really wanted to become a vet on the strength of those books. Then I figured that my cat allergy might pose some problems lol so I settled on medicine instead.. (To the best of my knowledge, other humans don't make me sneeze!)

Ah, I have to agree... I think my first literary crush as you so nicely term it was quite possibly Tristan!

And, while the TV show was actually really good, it seems very dated now, and Tristan just wasn't...well... Tristan...

Does anyone remember that spoiled Pekingese dog? Tricksy-Woo? lol There were some fantastic characters in those books - and many of them were animals!!

Oh! The pig! I had forgotten that! lol

All I really remember are Tricksy-Woo and the rather graphic calving descriptions.... Icky!

I really should read those books again.... I know I have them lying around somewhere...
