View Full Version : How long?

I was wondering how long "The Hobbit" is. I have noticed from Tolkien's LOTR triology that his books would be atleast 400 pages. But "The Hobbit" that I bought last week is only 280 pages long, of which I've already finished. So is the Hobbit actually shorter than LOTR and other Tolkien books, or did I buy a short version of the actual book? I'd hate to know that I have a short version, but I would still buy the longer version if I had to, cause I know that it would be worth it in the end
Thanks in advance for any help

The Hobbit is under 300 pages (well depends on the format, but about that)... a lot shorter than LotR.... And I haven't heard of any short versions of it, so I believe thats the whole Hobbit

i don't think there are any abridged versions...it is quite short compared to LOTR and it depends on how big the print is and stuff.....

Thanks you two ;) It's a relief that I actually have the whole book and that it isn't a short version...but it's still weird that it's so short :elfeek:

Well ... you may keep in mind the audience that the Hobbit was written for. Since the Prof. wrote it with children in mind, we can make the assumption that the shorter length suits the Age group. Hard to keep the kids' attention spans through thousands of pages ... lol!

Yes Mocha ... but such a grand encyclopedia it is for a 9 year old! I hope that you are devoting some time to reading this great children's story to her ... you could really open her imagination if she'll sit long enough to listen to ya.

i read it when i was around 9..maybe a bit younger...and yes, it was quite daunting at first (in fact i still prefer to read LOTR broken down into all 7 sections) but when i had read it i loved it and read it over and over for 2 1/2 weeks solidly!!

Well I don't think that my little sister would like to read the story nor would she want me to read it for her...she's more into Harry Potter's movies than reading them, she isn't as big of a book worm as I am  but I do wish that I could persuade her into reading The Hobbit or for it to be read to her :)

I have a suggestion for anyone reading The Hobbit to children, which I have used on many occasions when reading it to children. When you start reading it do not try reading a whole chapter at a time, as the child gets bored. Read about 5/6 pages, and if you have read it before let the child ask questions and give them simple explanations, that why they want to know more, and there curiosity becomes aroused and thay want to hear more.

I remember reading the Hobbit at about the age of eight or nine. I made the mistake of trying LoTR shortly afterwards... I was nearly too small to bear the weight... (so I chucked it against the far wall of the room and ignored it for years!)
But I did love the Hobbit when I read it first...
