View Full Version : Song sung hullo
Bethberry
July 16th,2002, 11:43 AM
A woman of middle height and indeterminate age strides through the early morning mist. Her copper-coloured hair is plaited around her head like a wreath of late summer sneezewort or gaillardia. She wears a long tunic of green, green as ilex or boxwood leaves, held close by a belt of silver worked in a chain of clematis bloom and hydrangea petals. Dark leggings are nearly hidden beneath her tunic and tucked into laced, supple, worn boots which reach to her knees.
Over her shoulder is slung a bag of brown leather, tooled in designs of oak and viburnum leaf, and she is covered by a cloak of deep violet, clasped at her neck by a silver and white brooch shaped of water-lilies which sparkle as if holding shining droplets of dew or rain.
She moves effortlessly as a stream falling away gently downhill, her cloak swaying like reeds at the edge of a pond. It could be said that mirth and contentedness mark her aspect rather than magical grace; something in her manner fills the heart with quiet delight. She sings a song which dissipates the unease of the dark unknown and unfamiliarity.

By that pool long ago
I bid a sad farewell,
To wander wide and far ahome.
I seek my mother's gladsome songs
throughout this Middle Earth.
Her voice untimely silenced be,
Yet still can mortal heart set free:
'O wind on the waterfall and the leaves' laughter,'
May the pure clear River spirit
Mellow time's disaster.

Something struck Orofacion, the sense of something, or someone he knew. Sure enough, it was the fair daughter of Iarwin Ben-adair, the lovely Bethberry. His heart sang as she glidded through the mist.
Welcome my friend, though your presence is already known by some. This is a wonderful place, full of civil, well mannered and well learned people. We indeed have one more such person at WaroftheRing now that the dear Bethberry has arrived.
Ai, bain sell ned Goldberry i mae govannen!

Bethberry hears others approach and stops her singing for the time being.
Thank you, indeed, Nessa, Illuvatar, Lady Arien, and also Orofacion of the Vanyar, for your fair welcomes. It is good to know that a few souls here appreciate Tolkien-inspired creativity. I hope to join many of you at Brandy Hall this evening.
Bethberry then bends over to pick up a few pebbles, to see if she can skip them across the Withywindle.

Welcome, fair river-daughter.
You would know me as Braeden Fireheart, once a humble traveller who crossed many leagues to reach her homeland of Gondor.
Now, I am still a traveller, but perhaps not so humble. :)
I wish you well in your stay here, Bethberry, and look forward to your ever-growing insight.

Mandin strolled up to stand beside her old friend Bethberry.
"Hullo," he said. "It is good to see you here."
Mandin stooped and picked up a rock and attempted to skip it. However, it hit an untimely ripple in the water, and sunk before it had skipped thrice. There was a tear in Mandin's eye. He didn't mind a failed skipped rock. No indeed. He looked around at all the people he had seen at another place that he still called his home, and he wondered why it had to turn out the way it had.
Ah well, things are not so bad. We have found a remarkable place to rest and speak together in peace and comfort!

Ah, Mandin. The elves like to think in terms of immortality, but it is not so. Their lives are tied to Arda and thus to the long defeat. It is the afterlife of the dead wherein eternity is found.
But let me show you the art of skipping pebbles. Much of the art lies in choosing the best pebble.... :)
