View Full Version : What does your name mean?

Mocha
April 9th,2003, 11:38 PM
I've noticed that about 90% of you all have names from Tolkien's work...

So would you care to explain what your name's character did and when he/she lived?

TheRingBearer
April 10th,2003, 08:21 PM
Mine can be interpreted as any of the ring bearers but it represents the latest one...me

Eorl the Young
April 10th,2003, 09:02 PM
Well... I called myself Eorl the Young after the founder of Rohan. (I read the unfinished tales were the entire ride of the Rohirrim form the North to the aid of Gondor was dicribed and I loved the character. It is a really cool part when the steward of Gondor and Eorl the Young the first king swear loyalty to one and other (that oath was the reason why the Rohirrim rode to Gondor to break the siege in LotR) Becouse of Eorl Gondor did not fall against the invading wainriders after the entire Gondorian army was destroyed. But I have a little regret of taking the name though: I should have read the Silmarillion first: I would love to take the name Fingon, Orodreth or Tuor. They rock!

Gwaihir
April 12th,2003, 03:53 AM
I got my name from Gwaihir the Windlord, the greatest of the eagles in the 3rd age. He saved Gandalf's hide a few times, and also saved Frodo and Sam in the end. I like his character.

Olorin
April 12th,2003, 05:13 AM
My name is olorin which is the Gandalf's real name, the name of his Maiar spirit.

Melain
April 12th,2003, 08:09 AM
Melain was one of the valar, secound in power(of the females) to Yavanna. She worked hard in the forming of middle earth.

Little Devil
April 12th,2003, 01:45 PM
I guess it's kinda obvious what my name means. ;) :evilcool:

Bonos-Girl
April 12th,2003, 05:39 PM
mine too! lol

YayBoromir!
April 12th,2003, 06:02 PM
Well everyone knows who Boromir is, but the "Yay" is there because I love that word, and it just sounds cool IMO  The exclamation mark makes it that much more lively and unique ;)

TheRingBearer
April 12th,2003, 09:54 PM
Yeah i say yay a lot lol

Ithielnor
April 12th,2003, 11:23 PM
Mine has no real meaning.
I just invented it to sound Tolkienish (is that a word?). I wanted to have something unique, something no one else would ever use.

YayBoromir!
April 12th,2003, 11:28 PM
It does sound very Tolkienish, Ithielnor. Yay, somebody else who says yay! It's such a cool word, no? lol

Alatar
April 13th,2003, 12:36 AM
Mine is of one of the Blue wizards the past to the east, one of the lesser Maiar and not much was documented on him just that he came to ME then left lol...i think

Miruvor
April 13th,2003, 02:48 AM
Hey Mocha, I think I'm probably the only other one, like you, named after a drink. Miruvor, the golden Elven Liquor that kept everyone warm in the snows of Carahdras. If we add a shot of it to Mocha, it would probably make a good nightclub drink, at @ $6.50.

Celebrían
April 13th,2003, 04:34 AM
Well, my name is (obviously) Celebrían, which means "lady crowned with silver" (Celebrían had silver hair, hence her name). Celeborn and Galadriel are my parents and I am wife to Elrond and mother to Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen, but I'm sure you all knew that.....

Kaimelar
April 19th,2003, 04:26 AM
Hi there everyone. I just thought I would add my name's meaning to the list:

Kaimelar ~ Dreamer

I'm pretty sure that it's the Sindarian form.

Undomiel
April 19th,2003, 03:16 PM
Well Undomiel is easy enough-Evenstar i believe, for i am the Evenstar of my people.

Mocha
April 19th,2003, 04:28 PM
Awww cute names ;) ;) ;) I'd love to have my own Elven name...hmm what does Mocha mean in Elven? Or Better yet what does Nora men in Elven? Nora means light....so does anyone know what light is in Elven and Sindarian?

Kaimelar
April 19th,2003, 06:33 PM
The only thing I can think of is kalina but that refers to light color.

Mocha
April 19th,2003, 06:37 PM
Hmm I hope someone knows what Nora means in Quenya, Elvish or Sindarin....

Thanks for the try dear Kaimelar *hugs*

As soon as I know what my name means in these languages, I'm going to persuad all my friends to call me in that certain language

Kaimelar
April 19th,2003, 06:45 PM
lol I just found it!

Nora ~ population...

I supose that wasn't the answer you were expecting but there you go!

Mocha
April 19th,2003, 06:46 PM
hmm in what language is that Kaimelar? :)

Kaimelar
April 19th,2003, 06:48 PM
I got it out of a Sindarian dictionary that I downloaded quite some time ago.

Do you think it's otherwise?

Mocha
April 19th,2003, 07:01 PM
I don't know, I think it's weird that my name would mean Population in Sindarin....I mean, does that mean that Nora is also in the Sindarin Language? In other words, would I still be called Nora if I lived in a place where people talked in Sindarin all the time?

Does anyone know if Nora means Nessa in Elvish?

Mocha
April 19th,2003, 07:21 PM
Light means Cala or Cale

So far my name is Nessa in Elvish(I remeber looking up the word "Nora" in an Elvish translator and that was the answer), and Cala or Cale in Quenya(an actual translation of the word "Light")

Celebrían
April 19th,2003, 07:54 PM
Doesn't "galad" mean light? I'm not sure if that would be Quenya or Sindarin. Galadriel translated is "Lady of Light", is it not? Correct me if I'm wrong...

HobbitFriend
April 19th,2003, 09:08 PM
hm, well my name is pretty self-explanatory: Hobbit. Friend. I like Hobbits, what can i say? ;)

Mocha
April 20th,2003, 07:40 PM
Hmmm you know what Celeb? I think that I'd be called Galadriel, too. If you are correct that is ;) lol Galadriel stole my name!!! damn! lol

Celebrían
April 20th,2003, 11:52 PM
Well, I'm pretty sure, but I'm not the elvish scholar (that would be Wil and Isiltari). When Arwen says to Frodo "Come back to the light", she uses the word, "galad". Don't quote me on anything, though. Wilwarin and Isiltari would be the ones to ask.

HobbitFriend
April 21st,2003, 02:54 AM
*whips out her Elvish dictionary* Galad.... yes, it means "light"

Celebrían
April 21st,2003, 05:52 AM
That's what I thought.. and "rí" means "crown" according to my dticionary, so what would "el" mean? Is it "star"?

Rune of Mirkwood
April 21st,2003, 06:24 PM
Rune: Dictionary explains it as [mystery, runic character, writing, secret discussion, magic] "one of the characters of an alphabet, probably derived from Latin and Greek; used by the Germanic people from about the 3rd to the 13th centuries; also a Finnish or Old Norse poem"...so, that is what the technical name I chose means...

Actually, I wanted something small and secret, sitting quietly and watching the Mirkwood Elves wandering about and protecting their woods...I love to look up and by chance, get to see Legolas and his band of brothers....love those boots on those Elves! (ahahah) :archer:

Mocha
April 21st,2003, 07:36 PM
lol @ Rune...such a great story of how you made your name! lol

Can I stop by at your place and watch Legolas and his tribe dancing and eating and being in their Elvish selves?

Now I know that my Elvish name should be Galad...how cool is that? hehe...and in Quenya it is Cala or Cale, which also means light

Rune of Mirkwood
April 21st,2003, 07:56 PM
Entering the Great Green Realm can be dangerous...spiders, orcs, other forces of darkness...poor Legolas and his people, having to leave three times! According to the history of his grandfather, his father, and get this...having to live underground. As a small magical stone, I feel safe...no one knows I am there...so yes, if you wish to enter Mirkwood and check out Legolas and his tribe dancing and eating (don't forget singing...Elves love to sing...!) They put me in a calm state when they do that....boy, imagination runs wild, doesn't it???

May 13th,2003, 03:59 PM
funny, i posted in this thread, but I didn't post about what my name means! :o lol
Well, according to a website about elvish, Winya means Evening, él means star. If you join them together, that's Evening Star. I'm satisfied with my own interpretation, so no one needs to correct me lol
Greenleaf... you ought to know what that means lol

Mocha

I only got into him during the summer vacation and only started reading them after school started...I had my LOTR triology but didn't have The Hobbit and I found it in a bookshop in here (Note: Tolkien isn't as famous in here as in other countries, therefore they only sell that LOTR and Hobbit in here)

Um, yeah...I've heard lots of things about all the intentional drug references in the book (Ex. Mushrooms, pipe weed and all that, not to mention the acid-trip encounter with Tom Bombadil...lol) but I prefer to think of it as flights of fancy inserted by a lot of twacked out hippies in the 70's. So he told the hobbits to run naked on the grass- maybe he was just an exhibitionist...

True that, someone should write Chris Tolkien a letter and ask him. I wonder what he'd say: "Yes, my father was an encouragable drug addict. But i hope you love him anyway!"

Truthfully, I wouldn't care. I'd still love LotR and its accompaniments.

You could be Diabolito... that's Spanish for Little Devil. Or El Diabolito, like,The Little Devil...that's about all the creativity I can muster.

Moch you nasty scheming little dirty...

You're catching on so well! lol

Yeah, El Diablo means 'The Devil', but if you at the ito suffix, it means like, little or childish devil. HA! Whoever said that 3 years of High School Spanish wouldn't get me anywhere! lol

Periantari Andruil
May 25th,2003, 09:03 AM
lol i've been reading through this long 8 page thread and feel such love in here that i want to join in the conversation ;) hehe lol
My name "Andruil" is a mispelled version of Aragorn's sword, Anduril lol  ...
i think i want to change it though..to something Elvish (even though i'm a hobbit...) ... any suggestions? =)

What do you mean by saying that I'm catching on so well? I've been like this forever, just ask Gil or Win or Luv or FL...they'd tell you that I've always been the  I am! lol it just depends on the mood that I have, because that's what triggers it :p

As for the Diablo matter, I don't know a thing about Spanish, it's just that one of my online friends' name is El Diablo, so I figured that it should be like that lol roflmao

Welcome to the convo dear ol' Andu! :smooch: as for the name you are seeking for, how about choosing an English name then translating it into Quenya or Sindarin....that would be a cool thing ;)

Tirithel
May 26th,2003, 03:02 AM
Yeah and you could pick like anything...I put "Toaster" into a translator (the link I believe is provided on this thread somewhere) and it gave me an answer. I can't remember what it was, but I remember that I liked it better than the answer I got for my real name. Sad, I know...

Fairawen
May 26th,2003, 04:22 PM
Haha, I've been reading this thread and I soooo want to be a part!
A while ago, I came up with an idea for a book when a dream hit me that I had gone through a Vortex and traveled to Middle-Earth. It was before Bilbo's Birthday Bash, as I like to call it, and I attended it. I called myself, Fairawen, because everyone is always telling me "You've got such beutiful fair skin Amy!" so I added the -wen which means "lady" or "maid" so my name would mean,
"Fair lady" or "Fair maid"
There you go! That's my name!

LUv, I love your avatar too. Very nice. The word luv is kinda circulating in here...nice...

No backup necessary Mocha! :) When somebody proudly states that they're a bit evil sometimes, it usually means that they really are and generally get away with it. That's been my experience, anyways...lol

So anyway, what's this thread about? Oh yeah, names. Very nice, Fairawen. That's kinda what I did too- just smooshed a few words together and got something kinda cool. Works for me!

Mocha
