i'm afraid of spiders, i see them and think "theres nothing wrong with them" but the moment one gets near me i get panic attacks.
thats about the only thing i'm properly afraid of, i have a few little fears but they've been beaten into me during my last 8 years. lol

spiders are kinda weird at 11pm when your in the shower and they're crawling on the ceiling above you (trust me...it happened!!)

I'm also an arachnophobic, totally through the fault of my sister who used to (grab me) and jump onto the bed to get away from the spider that scuttled across the room. It's mostly the tiny black ones that get me...they move so flippin' fast.
I also have a fear of roads...or rather of crossing them...
Bonos-Girl
April 11th,2003, 09:41 PM
the freakiest spiders are those tiny red ones you fin don brick walls...whats with them?!

I have some sort of phobia of dish rags. I hate them.. they're creepy. And they're full of bacteria too. Ugh! People never really change them either.. and they stink.
I use them because I have to, but urgh.
I don't like spiders either, but I'm not really scared of them. I just don't like when they get too close. ;)
I used to hate public speaking and all that too, but it got better. Right now I just don't care. Noone would care whether I got all red or not, so why should I? :)
Other phobias.. I suppose being locked into small places. Like being locked inside a room with no windows.. or like getting buried alive. I've always hated that and I've had lots of nightmares about that. Urgh.
Bonos-Girl
April 11th,2003, 09:46 PM
getting buried alive would suck..but i figure it'll never happen!! lol

April 11th,2003, 09:47 PM
i don't discriminate between different types of spiders, i just get the hell away from them and then either throw stuff at them or vacuum them so they don't pay me any visits again. :)
i can handle them red ones on the walls though, they stay away from me normally.
i went through a period of being afraid of crossing roads just after someone i knew got run over, it must have been months before i was happy crossing them again.

When I see a huge spider (or actually.. I dislike the flying ones more than spiders.. those insects with wings and long legs, they suck blood) my first thought is to "get someone to take it as far away from me as possible.. alternative.. run".. but then I calm down and can't really hurt it. I'd rather just push it away with a long stick or something. But that's spiders, and not if they're too big.
With those flying things.. I'll hit them with whatever is close by. I have a cookbook at home that is great for those flying things and for mosquitoes. ;)
Bonos-Girl

mosquito? or daddy long legs...daddy long legs don't suck blood though...so probably mosquito!

spiders...well I wouldn't keep them as pets, and the REAL big ones gives me the creeps, but I'm not afraid of the littleones we have up here north. I don't like being in tiny rooms, prefer even to stay out of solariums. Had a bad insident when staying at a hotel once, with the firealarm going off at 5 in the morning, scaring the hell out of me! Couldn't sleep easily for days, lights on, tense muscles everywhere. Being trapped I guess is my phobia!

Daddy longlegs, that's probably the ones. I think they suck blood.
I was hoping that maybe they didn't have things like that here in Germany.. then I noticed a big spot on the wall in the kitchen here in my flat, with blood and pieces of legs and wings.. from one of those huge ones. Urgh. I think I'll keep my windows closed this summer. :)

i could try running a spider obediance class, if it works i'll be a millionairre this time next year. ;)
i like moths in a way, they have a goal in life, fly to the moon. so why do it via my house? its not the quickest route, i'm certain of that. plus they flutter at me and i don't like things in my face like that. :)

weird.. I'm pretty sure that my sister got bitten once. Maybe that's just me though!? Could have been a huge mousqitoe (I really can't spell that name, Mene?). Well that's good if they don't suck blood.. I don't need to be scared of them. But I still don't like them.
I don't like anything with too many legs and eyes. Urgh.

I agree... I can't see why people freak out when they see a spider... they're many nastier bugs....
but however that's true... so many people are afraid of them... that's why Tolkien used them in his writing...
YayBoromir!

I'm not scared of spiders.. though I think I would be scared of Shelob...lol
I do have trouble with public speaking, especially as I tend to stumble on words when I read. I wouldn't say it was a phobia, though, I just don't like it.:(
Frodo's Love
April 12th,2003, 11:33 AM
Yes..... spiders ARE harmless... and still I'm nearly paralyzed when I see them suddenly in front of me or hanging right above me when I'm lying in bed... :o
I also had problems with speaking in public, but I had to do that so often in the last four years that I got used to it after a while. But still I'm nervous at the moments right before I have to go out and speak to a group of people...

Also, I don't know why, but I'm afraid of - I'm not sure how you would call it in English - the ocean floor, (?) bottom (?), or whatever it's called. It freaks me out to step on it, I never know what is down there... It terrifies me.

April 12th,2003, 01:38 PM
I don't think I'm really scared of anything, spiders are ok, love public speaking, heights I'm ok with, deep water and all that kinda stuff I'm ok with. I guess my phobia is fear itself...
Bonos-Girl
April 12th,2003, 03:24 PM
ooh...fear is a good one!! it would be so cool if i could say that..but unfortunately i'm kinda scared of public speaking and stuff...although i don't really nthink it counts as a phobia, its not like i'll be sick or anything if made to do it!! lol
i love heights....abseiling is soooo fun!!
Polly Sandybanks
April 12th,2003, 03:26 PM
Galadhrim.. I agree. The bottom of the ocean (ok.. not bottom bottom.. that's pretty deep down I guess :)) or of a lake is scary to step on. When I was younger I used to wear sandals sometimes just because I was scared to step on a crab or whatever.. even though there really aren't any crabs in the lakes I used to go in.
I'm not too fond of any insects. When I was in the States last summer we sat watching TV at Bramble's brothers house (Bramblerose Bunce at this forum) and all of a sudden I saw something really huge, black in the corner of my eye. I just thought.. "WHAT was THAT??". Then there was another one.. big black bugs or something.. they must have been at least 3-4 cm long :o and when we got out of the sofa and took the pillows out more came out.. there must have been about 7-8 or something, at least. Urgh!! I'm not scared of them, they're just creepy.
Galadhrim
April 12th,2003, 10:49 PM
I don't like your story, Polly. *shivers* Any insect that is over 1,5 cm long freaks me out. :elfeek: Forgot about that before...
Mirkgirl
April 13th,2003, 12:10 AM
I can't stand walking on seaweed... the feeling is awful.. but Im not afraid of it actually...
As to crabs.. one vacation I was when/where there were many crabs in the water... just look around and you'll see one... and no one got me even tho I sensed something running from under my foot couple of times... so it's not that bad...
I know that there is one poisonous animal (well one for Black Sea I think) that sometimes comes near the shore in the sands... I have even seen it (dead)... I still get shivers every time I step on something remotely sharp... it's not that dangerous from what I know.. but one can drown

April 13th,2003, 01:30 AM
i'm okay when i can see the bottom and it's under like 6 feet... but anything deeper just makes me want to cry... i couldn't watch 'the perfect storm... the idea of floating in the deep ocean for days just freaks the hell out of me

Well, I'm not too fond of snakes. Even seeing them on TV makes me cringe. Other things I'm not too crazy about (I wouldn't call them phobias, becasue phobias are very serious), but anyway, I don't like driving over bridges (especially if they are over water). Last summer I think it was, a section of I-40 fell into the river in Oklahoma. It was awful. So that incident hasn't helped this "fear" of mine. I'm not a fan of enclosed spaces, either. The thought of lying in a tanning bed even for a few minutes freaks me out.
Well, that's pretty much it. Do I sound crazy enough for you?

I really don't like it when my feet leave the bottom of the swimming baths, though it isn't quite a phobia I really panic when my feet leave the bottom. And I really hate fire especially when I have to light the oven manually, sticking your arm into the oven to light the are at the back with a math really freaks me out. When I was little I wouldn't go anywhere near sparklers and I hated fireworks...I'm ok now but I still don't like my hand going near sparklers even if I have gloves on and the fire can't go past the metal anyway...it didn't really help that I used to watch 999 (a RL emergancy programme) and see all these accidents that had to do with fire...

I have no idea how I acquired it, but I have a deathly fear of frogs, of all things. I can't look at a realistic drawing, photo, tv show, nothing without hyperventilating, crying, sweating, shaking.
The sound of croaking doesn't really bother me, but I have to be wary of anything hopping around. At some times, especially when camping or visiting the tropics it's been debilitating. My husband wants to try to get me over it but...blecchhh!

Poor Pil! :( One time, we bought a Teddy Ruxpin bear - it had a tape player in it, and when you put the cassette in, the thing would move - the mouth, eyes, the head turned. It came with tapes of children's stories, but we put in Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols, anything Metal or Punk. lol It was really creepy to watch it "singing" Highway to Hell. lol

It's not the hopping, really. It's the way they look, their bulgy eyes, their body shapes, that bubble thing they do with their throats, their tongues--ooh, I'm getting the willies just thinking about it!
To share an experience, I was in the Philippines visiting family and, after a night dancing we got out of the car in my grandmother's driveway. I thought I was looking at a rock on the ground, then it hopped away! My cousin had to carry me into the house.
What about salamanders?
Spiders, lizards, snakes...they don't bother me. We had a whole menagerie of that stuff in our first apartment.

Okay, maybe it's not a phobia, because it doesn't scare me, but I'm scared of passing out, which is what I do when I see blood or scars....so maybe it is a phobia, indirectly. ;)

When I was a kid we lived on a military base in CA. Every year at Halloween someone would dress up as the Headless Horseman for Halloween. Before Sunset he would go around and pass out candy to the kids. However, after sunset he rode around the base (with permission of course) as he infamous Spook of the book....I was terrifed. The one time he actually trailed my mothers car home was the night I was not in the car thank goodness. 1) Insects, spiders anything like that (and I just stayed in a converted barn where there were loads of spiders and woodlice in my bed)
2) being trapped
3) Dentists - possibly my greatest fear and now my wisdom teeth are causing me trouble. Hence I am drugged up to the eyeballs on paracetamol and trying to ignore it!!!!!!!!!

You could add "being trapped" to my list as well. That's never a good feeling to have.... :o

being lost somewhere on my own with no money or way to get home. even being stuck in london would scare me....i'd probably end up walking the wrong way knowing me and end up in Surrey or summat...lol
actually...i might be un-panicky enough to find a shop that sells compasses to see what direction i need to go! lol

once when i went to camden with friends i had to go home and they were all going to meet some other friends....and it was pouring down so camden station was shut (northern line is the deepesta nd gets flooded sooo easily..) so we had to walk to the next tube station. i can't remember what happened next but i think that station may have been closed too...so we randomly caught a bus...but it was in the rush hour so it took about 1/2 hour to go a few feet....then we decided to get out and walk...then we decided we couldn't actually be bothered and it got to the staion they wanted. i got off there as well and made my way to liverpool street on my own...in the rush hour....and then this drunk guy started talking to me so i ran away to a different carriage....it was actually rather amusing loking back on it..but i was so scared that i would never actually make it home alive! lol

I get that feeling, I was out in London with my family and we just missed the train by 3 minutes! So we though ok, well get the next one, but there were no trains for about 3/4 hours cos some idiot decided to chuck himself on the train tracks to kill himself somewhere so everything got held up. In the end got home at about 4 in the morning! I hate trains sometimes.

I remembered another fear of mine: parking garages. I'm always uncomfortable when I have to go in one. I keep picturing the layers collapsing on top of each other. :o

legolastheawesome I used to be scared of Pinocchio too! I guess it was the puppet master mostly and I didn't really like puppets that much as they kinda freak me out. ;)

I have to get up infront of my Spanish class ALOT! okay, it's hard when you are up in front of the class, and you are speaking English, but now...YOU ARE SPEAKING A WHOLE DIFFERENT LANGUAGE!! and my spanish teacher counts more for the oral than the written work, and i am still not too comfortable going up in front of the class and it's almost may!

We were in the Lake District once and my parents and I were going to some show really far out, there were a LOT of really steep hills and the car went halfway up one and started rolling down again! Right towards the edge...and I was in the back seat so I had a front row view :o
Another thing I really...really hate is zombies, when I was little I watched one of the night of the living dead movies (they were all stuck in this mall) and I had nightmares about it for ages afterwards! I don't know if it was just the zombies or that constant music in the background, the de dum de dum, de dum de dum, de dum de da da da da da de dum :elfeek:

OMG Ranger that sounds really scary! :o I've had one of those experiences...it was in Spain, and we'd taken the long way round (and got lost *cough cough*)
We ended up in a place called "El Tanque" which was like a very long, winding road through the mountains. We were turning a corner on the outside of the road, and all of a sudden, a bus came round (it was a blind corner). The roads were so narrow, and the bus was seriously tilting towards us, it felt like it would fall on our car and knock us off the side of the mountain (we were right on the edge of a sheer drop). Hair-raising stuff! :elfeek:

i'm absolutely perrified of spiders, i can squash them because of the crunch, i can spray them coz they get angry so i cover them with a bucket, so they cant get out and wait for some one to come and help me, then if its a particularily big spider i pile books on the bucket so that it cant push its way out. I'm also scared of drowning, being buried alive ( did anyone see Crossing Jordan when she was ) and being in a car accident, and getting struck by lightning, (i'm really paraniod about that) and also not being able to sleep at night and. But yes i do leave the house and go outside, i'm just carefull. I even got my drivers licence first go.

my dad's friend HATES spiders...he absolutely despises them. He can't watch them on TV, and he can't even go into my cousin's room because he owns a tarantula. I wonder if he saw Spider-Man?

My neighboor is terrified of cats....one day when I went to visit his daughter, who is only a year older than I am...I was carrying her kitty around, and I don't know why, but I wanted to talk to her dad so I went to his bedroom which he also uses as a living room of his own. Anyway, when I walked in with the kitty, he was laying on the bed talking to his friend when all of a sudden he started jumping on the bed and yelling at me to take the cat out of the room without realising the he still clutched the phone in his hands....it was so funny!

My friend is terrifed of dogs. I was walking home with her one time, and there was a dog that was behind a fence and it began barking. She screamed and ran straight across the street. Everyone thought that she was in trouble, so like everyone on the street came to help her, and when she said that the dog scared her, everyone blew it off and she was so embarrassed. She doesn't want to come to my house unless my dog is clear out of sight. But I guess that is the way she is.
