I was wondering...
Are the Nazgul and the Ringwraiths the same thing?
And also: can they be killed or "die" because i thought i remember reading (i think it was in The Flight to the Ford or something) that they can't be killed. But then in RotK, Merry and Eowyn supposedly "killed" the Nazgul king. I'm confused.

I know the Nazgul and the Ringwraiths are the same thing.
May be somebody could explain the next part better than I could. Oh well, I'll do my best. :) Merry aquired a sword in the Barrow Downs that was previously owned by the Nazgul King (maybe even forged by him, I don't remember) therefore it had that special quality that made it harmful. Eowyn removed his head I think, and that stopped him. He did not neccesarily die, even you know what I mean, he just, .... ceased to be.
Would someone better with words and more familiar with the books give it a try? ;)

Oh i dunno Nessa.....you did a pretty good job of explaining it IMO:thumbs:
Yes HF, Nazgul is the Elven term for the ringwraiths, and no, they could not be killed...
As to which of the two, Eowyn or Merry, dealt the telling blow on the battle field, fans are still arguing, and i wont get into that here....suffice to say....Merry had a blade of Westernesse....from the Barrow downs as you say Nessa.....which had the virtues of the earliest of the Dunedain...however it was not created by the witch king, but by his enemies, the Dunedain, the men of Westernesse, or Numenoreans, and laced with virtues against him and his minions.....when Eowyn beheaded the fell beast, the WK attacked her but was stopped by Merry who stabbed him in the back of the knee with that blade, allowing Eowyn to drive "her sword between crown and mantle" at which the WK's spirit fled...whether that is dying, as such, is hard to say...whew..... bet thats now as clear as mud!lol lol

I like to think that 1. the witch-king's body was removed from ME and 2. That his spirit returned to the dark places of thw world, or the void...take your pick!
Also (as everyone knows) I am a HOOOOOOGE fan of merry's and am also looking forward to when his finest moment is brought to life on screen! :hooray: :smooch:

As I understand it ... the Naz-gul (which translates into "RingWraith" from the Elvish) only perished once the One Ring had been destroyed, I don't even think that Eowyn actually "killed" the WitchKing but his essence didn't have the time to acquire a "new form" due to the ring's destruction.
Unlike the Nazgul, Sauron was never completely destroyed ... he was simply reduced to a harmless shadow doomed and bound to the world.

Wasn't there summut bout the king's 'spirit' flying off into the air with a scream and being burnt up in the fires of mount doom...or am i just COMPLETELY delusional....? :embarras: :p

youre delusional ;) lol
the actual quote is...."and a cry went up into the shuddering air, and faded to a shrill wailing, passing with the wind, a voice bodiless and thin that died, and was swallowed up, and was never heard again in that age of the world."
