View Full Version : A Group Reading?

Would anyone out there like to lead us in a group reading through the Unfinished Tales anytime in the near future? With our upcoming "Guide" project, it would be very helpful to have a refresher over this material and what better way than to read it as a group with content discussions?
We will of course dedicate a few threads to it and so on. Please reply back with any interests or ideas about this. Looking forward to digging through it with you all!

Well...I'd definately like to participate. I dunno about leading tho. What would the leader's duties entail?

Well ... the responsibilities for a Group Reading Coordinator (or GRC ... lol) should include:
- setting material expectations (e.g. # of pages read per timeframe).
- posing questions or commentary concerning the material.
- fostering continued interest in the event through personal and public communication.
So basically just keeping everyone organized, updated, and interested. It's a very rewarding task ... I've done it quite a few times and it seems that leading this sort of thing allows for a greater understanding of the material since part of the job is to think about things from multiple angles.
It can be as intense or as laid-back as the coordinator wants it to be.
Please ask for further clarification if necessary!

I'd certainly be interested in finding out more ... and what is the "guide" project ... sounds interesting ?

ooh! ooh!
I just bought Unfinished Tales last night! Let's do it! I'd been putting it off honestly because I'm twitchy about unfinished business, and not being able to complete the stories will probably drive me crazy! But I know this is an important work, so I'm taking a whack at it.

Alright ... looks like we are getting a few interested parties! The first person to "volunteer" to run this should email or PM me. I will then get together with you on the details and actually help guide you through the start-up. I think it would be nice to get 2 study leaders so will be looking for two apps!
Thanks

Rumil,
In answer to your question about the "Guide" project, I will be PMing you with some information but if you will look down in the vacancies forum ... you'll get more info as well ...
Hope you are interested!

Just want to say that I'd be well interested in taking part - I have read UT a good few times at this stage.
Just love it, especially the Coming of Tuor to Gondolin and the Tale of Galadriel and Celeborn...
Basically, if I can help, let me know,
Lalaith

Alright then! This looks very promising because from what I've seen, Rumil and Lalaith are both very well-read and knowledgeable about the material already! Not to mention the fact that they are always willing to help someone find the appropriate information!
I would like to add the both of you to my AOL IM list and then we can get this rolling in a very short time! UT, here we come!
P.S. Rumil ... my PM box has been cleared ;)

Hmmm, I don't have AOL IM, I'm afraid - I do have both MSN and Yahoo... Is that any good?
If needs be, I can set up AIM at the weekend...
Algamesh
April 17th,2003, 12:51 AM
well ... not necessarily ... if Rumil has access to MSn that will work too ... its not a requirement that we have an IM but it sure makes colaboration easier ;)
We can work through email or PMs if need be ...

Sorry all, but the filters here prevent me from using any sort of IM service. I'd still like to take part in the reading, though if poss.

I bought this book, and have also been putting off reading it. Could I join the group? :)
I have AOL if that helps at all...

Allow me to clarify the AOL IM issue ...
I was addressing this mainly to Rumil and Lalaith. They had expressed some interest in leading a guided study so I wanted to check the possibilities of IM'ing them to discuss leading this.
No one who wants to participate has to have AOL IM. Nor anything else for that matter. We would run it from this forum and thats all that's needed. More on this soon!

I would be interested in participating. I have a copy of UT that is, appropriately enough, unfinished. (about 1/3rd read). Will we do this here or will there be a new thread.?
Algamesh
April 20th,2003, 06:39 AM
Not sure on the actual thread structure we will use yet. I believe that Lalaith and Rumil may guide us through this but they are waiting on me to email them some sutff to asist with the launch. I was planning to do so today but I've had a really bad afternoon (see my thread in The Prancing Pony for details). I should be able to communicate with them in a day or two and then it will be up to them to make the decisions that matter! Stay tuned!

To whom it may concern,
Will we be going chapter by chapter, or by a set number of pages? I am looking forward to this group reading.
Lalaith

I suppose it concerns me, cos I'm gonna be helping to lead it... But, I haven't discussed the specifics with Rumil and Algamesh yet - we will let you know as soon as we get motoring!

Just an opinion here - there are different editions, so pages might be confusing...
Algamesh
April 24th,2003, 04:12 PM
It will definitely be by assigned chapters ... as Mirky says ... different editions will breed confusion otherwise.

That's a hint. Ahem. ;)

Algy - You're a God! You knew I was waiting with baited breath to have a new Tolkien book discussion on this site. UT is perfect and my idea is....whoever writes the best endings to the most stories gets a trip to see the Premeire in Wellington !!!!! Is that a prize that WotR can offer? No? Well, it was worth a try. Maybe I jus' auter concentrating on gettin' the darn thing read! Tx

What happened to our group reading? I stopped reading UT so I could participate in the group reading.

Enormous apologies! My phonelines were down for the weekend - very stressful, as I couldn't get online... I'm in the middle of exams right now, but maybe I could set up the thread at the weekend, if that suits? Sorry for the delay, but I hope to get this on the road asap...
Rumil - I'll mail you about this later, ok?

May 20th,2003, 09:51 AM
I don't mind waiting until your exams are over. It will be less rushed and stressful that way. Just my humble opinion, June 1st sounds like a good start date to me.
SindarinGirl
May 20th,2003, 04:42 PM
Yeah, that's fine, whenever things calm down for everyone - Rumil said he was overwhelmingly busy at work right now.
Sorry to hear about your phone problems Lalaith, glad they're back up for you. Good luck with exams.

I could use some direction - I THIS the thread for the discussion group or the one above titles Unfinished Tales? Are we still on the original timetable? The opne Ru sent had leaders assigned to chapters but no dates. Where we at?

I would also like to know what is happening with the discussion group. I am still interested.

mecry I'm not sure what's happpened to my co-leader!! But I'll set up a separate thread later on, and set the reading, etc...
Is there anyway that those of you who are taking part could email (lalaith@warofthering.net) me? Cos I don't know who we have in the group...

Oops. I accidently posted this in UT thread but meant to post it here. I just now saw my mistake. Since we already started discussion, it is not so humorous a post any more. Here it is anyway:
:hyper: :hyper: can't wait for the group discussion to start :hyper: :hyper: ( I am not rushing you Lalaith. I just wanted to use the new hyper smilie)
