I have been playing on a girls high school team for three years now and trying to follow national tournaments....its hard when you're in America and it is very popular...

But anyway! I was wondering if there was anyone around who played or enjoyed wathcing it who would like to chat about it here?

Bawax
July 20th,2002, 11:21 AM
i play and am a big fan, i go to about 30 prrofessional games a year, i play too but had to have a break off cause of injury recently.

so do you support any particular team?

Polly Sandybanks
July 20th,2002, 11:57 AM
I don't play, but I enjoy watching it. I'm actually going to a match later today. It's my local team, Östers IF.

I'll ask the same question as bawax, do you have a favourite team?

Pil
July 20th,2002, 03:21 PM
My dad and brother are big Chelsea FC fans but i'm a Manchester United supporter! Go reds! It's cool that people all over the world enjoy soccer...ooo, that's weird...football! :wiggle:

Nessa
July 20th,2002, 04:05 PM
*Sigh*

Being American (and in high school) I have never been to a professional match.

None of you are from the US? Soccer is generally ignored here. Its hard to follow, I could bearly keep up with world cup this year. I supported Italy and USA (for once  ). I mostly play it, but I don't exactly have a professional career in front of me. lol

Nationally, I like the Chicago Fire.

Pil
July 20th,2002, 04:14 PM
I thought 'soccer' was up and coming in the US. Mind you...i've never seen anyone part from my bro want to play american football... :p

Nessa
July 20th,2002, 04:18 PM
Soccer got a surge of popularity while the US was in the cup finals, but as soon as we lost, well..... the general opinion is if America isn't involved in something..it doesn't exist. :p

Maybe it will become popular someday....but nothing will beat American Football....unfortunately.

Bawax
July 20th,2002, 11:51 PM
oh no, i can't even get away from chelsea fans here. ;)

as i'm a west ham fan you'll know why i said that Pil. :)

Ohh, Im a Liverpool fan...the premierships coming to Merseyside this season ;)
Dudek, Babbel, Henchoz, Hyyppia, Risse, Duff, Gerrard, Hamann, Bowyer, Owen, Heskey.....Truly mouthwatering. Then we have El Hadji Douif on the bench, the Senegal World Cup Star :)

Aragorn:king:

Polly Sandybanks

I noticed that people didn't care much about football (well.. ok.. soccer) in the US. I was there for a few weeks this summer (June 12th - July 7th) and I tried to find news about the World Cup, but it was more or less impossible! If they ever mentioned it on TV they only spoke about the US team (which is not that surprising, but I wanted more news about all the teams).
I had to phone home to get news. :)

But it will probably get bigger over there too eventually.

I know Polly. Imagine bringing it up and everyone just sort of ignoring it.... ah well. I love America, really, but American Football? Why?

Pil
July 22nd,2002, 06:36 PM
R u dissing it? I don't, like, mind if u are i just didn't understand ur post. :duh:

I dunno ANYTHING about american football other than they have a lot of padding! lol roflmao :p

Nessa
July 22nd,2002, 06:38 PM
I don't know how to feel about US football. I like it, I watch the games quite a bit....its just that I'd prefer soccer and I wish it had half the enthusiasm here that the NFL produces.

I think the US and Canada are the only countries who play American Football.........

Pil
July 23rd,2002, 08:01 PM
Quite possibly...it kinda incorporates rugby, football...the padding from ice hockey games... lol I think some people find it unoriginal.

Teeeeeny q: How many players are there on an american football team? just always wanted to know...ok...complete lie...but i'd like to know all the same... :embarras:

Nessa
July 23rd,2002, 08:08 PM
Actually, Pil, I have no idea! :o

Shows how much I care, doesn't it? ;)

Does anyone play soccer? Do you ever question your sanity? I came home yesterday from the hardest practice of my life (my coach wants me dead, I'm sure) and barely managed to shower off before I fell asleep. It really is a physically trying game.

Illuvatar
July 23rd,2002, 09:32 PM
Okay...time to join in.....

1st - There are 11 players allowed on the field.

2nd - There is a Europoean Football League(EFL), which has teams from all over Europe (Spain, Germany, Britain, Scotland, etc) and the play is very good!! :)

3rd. - Whilst Soccer isn't a dominating sport over here, it IS followed quite well. Take for example the fact that throughout the states there is quite a large Hispanic popluation, and they REALLY love thier soccer, so when things happen like this year when both the U.S.A. AND Mexico end up in the World Cup, it does get quite exciting!! pfbbt lol

Now as for me, I am a die-hard Green Bay Pakers fan!!

There are only two places in the world that I dream about going....One is Scotland, and the other is to be at Lambau Field in Green Bay for a Packer home game!!

Aragorn Isildur
July 23rd,2002, 10:23 PM
Isnt there an offensive and defensive team which swap depending on the play?

Illuvatar
July 23rd,2002, 10:40 PM
Ahhh...Okayy.....Sheesh....lol

There is 11 players from each team allowed on the field at one time.

One side is defense the other side is offense.

Now, both sides may "substitute" players in-between plays, but they have to do it quickly as there is a 45 second time limit in which to get the next play off! If the ball is not snapped by the 45 second marker then the team with the ball (the offense) is penalized 5 yards. There are 100 yards on the football field and the ball must break the plane of the opposing team's goal line to score.

There....

American Football 101 roflmao

Thank you, Illuvatar!

The Spanish population in Ohio is a bit less than in Southern California....so I bet it is more celebrated down there. :)

Lady Arien
July 24th,2002, 05:44 AM
It's not only celebrated....it's almost rioted, actually! I don't really follow it myself...wasn't a "team player" when I was in high school, but my best friend was a varsity player and she kicked much heinie....I had a great time watching her play, but as for myself (and I speak for my beloved Illuvatar as well)...I'M COUNTING THE DAYS TILL FOOTBALL SEASON STARTS! (August 10th...WOO HOO!)

Nessa

I am a Huge Football Fan, I play & run a football team here in the UK, I also spend most of my spear time watching the Great Game.

i have had a season ticket in the bobby moore upper tier for 6 years, this'll be the seventh. :)

i try to play as much as i can but i lost my fitness this year cause of injuries so i'm trying to get back to my old self. :)

what o you think of Roeders signings so far? do you think we'll do as well as last years 7th place finish?

The Black Sword
August 6th,2002, 09:38 AM
Never been in the BMU whats it like seems good, have a few mates in the BML thats got to be the best place in the ground.

I think Glen is a top man seems to know what he wants and don't bye total **** like Bagpuss did. I think GR has done wonders for the club since he took over, I know a few people at the club and they say the players have a lot of time for him.

They also say the club has changed for the better since Bagpuss left, it seems he was as useless as his singings looked.

I think a top six this year if we can keep a fully fit team, I would like to see Defoe in the top 5 scores as well.

I have £200 on them finishing above spurs, i had £100 last year for them to end up in the top ten (easy money) Spurs fans really know **** All about football.

Bawax
August 6th,2002, 05:28 PM
hehehe, you seem just like me, i put money on west ham finishing above spurs last year, i saw it as the easiest money i've made for years. :)

in his time i quite liked old bagpuss, his last year and a half went badly downhill, up until then i thought he was doing a great job. Gr is far more tactically astute though, he seems to have made us a team thats truly tough to play against (except when we roll over and play dead obviously).

where abouts do you normally go when you can get to upton park? i was always a fan of the old north bank but that was 10 years ago.

When i do go over there its normaly BML or west upper (don't go up there), But the last time i went was Chescum in the cup i was in the BML.

To be fair Bagpuss did do well with what he had untill he Let Rio go mecry then he spent all that money on dross.

(The Old North Bank) God i was a kid when i went in there, total class singing knessup and all that...... I got trabled quite a bit in them days.

I don't mind gooners myself mainly cos we both hate the Yids

Essex cricket team would be my team if i was into cricket.

wow, your the first ever person i have met online who supports west ham and essex and actually goes over west ham.

have you been since the Dr Martens stand opened? i've never been in it but it looks good, very very big compared to the rest of the ground. :)

The Black Sword
August 9th,2002, 09:23 AM
Yea i was in the DMU not long after they opened it, they were putting all the DML season ticket holders up they so it was ok.

But not much singing, loads of kids as well, Its not bad up there but you seem far away from the action really. When your up there evry thing seems so small.

If you wanna chat to other hammers on-line go to

http://www.westhamonline.net/

It's a class site most people on there are ok, loads of us on there as well. Good updates and match reports, i am on there most days.

well one thing Eowyn, west ham are one of the only teams in england not to have won, derby have some easy games coming up so i know they'll be ok.

i just hope we beat man city saturday, i think it'll be a score draw though, 1-1 or 2-2 is my guess. :(

Eowyn
September 19th,2002, 01:07 AM
don't like man city! or any manchester clubs actually!

The first match I saw was Derby v West Ham. I went with some friends. now that was fun. I now work as a waitress at Pride Park. Yeah!

we beat crystal palace. I think it was them it was an away game so I forgot about it! opps! but we won! yeah kinky!

Bawax
September 19th,2002, 01:11 AM
how long ago was your first game Eowyn? i went to Derby vs West Ham a couple of years ago when we won 2-0, we were a much better team then though.

do you work in the players bar or a private part of the ground then?

Eowyn
September 19th,2002, 01:23 AM
I work in the boxes along by the toyota stand if you've seen the big rows of glass windows in the stadium I work in them! I have to silver serve!

do you mean the match at pride park?

Bawax
September 19th,2002, 01:29 AM
yeah thats the match i mean, John Hartson scored for us and Marc Keller towards the end which went in off the underside of the crossbar 9i don't watch that much football honest)

i've seen them boxes, i doubt i'll ever get to see the inside of them, i rarely see away games now, i work most saturday mornings so i can't travel to them. :(

do you find your job easier if derby win?

Eowyn
September 19th,2002, 01:38 AM
nope! they lose I fetch drinks from the bar, they win I fetch drinks! when will they learn I can't carry 10 drinks on a tray! takes me 2 trips to get all the drinks!

I think I saw that game! but I was in the opposite stand to the away stand!

did you see a steel band playing outside the stadium?

Bawax
September 19th,2002, 01:44 AM
erm from memory yes i think i did see a steel band in the distance but i didn't get close to them at all. it was a very good game though.

i worked in a bar for 5 years and people never understand why you cant get all their drinks ready and in front of them in a flash. :)

do you enjoy doing it as a job? do you get time to watch the games at all?

Eowyn
September 19th,2002, 01:49 AM
I get to see some of them! the people in my box are nice and let me watch some of it! but I'll probably lose that box because I have to matches left then I go to uni and they won't give me that box again! (I don't think so anyway, shame)

oh and the steel band! they were called the Pantastics! I used to play for them. we got the tickets as payment for playing there.

Bawax
September 19th,2002, 01:55 AM
so i might have been just yards from you and i'll never know, i could do with one of them photograhic memories, i'd be able to tell wheat you looked like then. :)

if you had seen me then i' probaby look a state cause i'd drunk quie alot, i think by the game started i'd spent 7 hours in the pub.

Eowyn

So you're the stereotypical beer swelling football fan!! You ought to be ashamed -you give the rest of us a bad name!! J/k:grin:

As to working in bars, I never had any trouble of blokes wanting their drinks straight away and not understanding why it takes more than a nano second to pour - maybe because i was such a wonderful barperson and they loved the opportunity to talk to me;) lol

I like blokes that are charming, and who love themselves alittle, not too much but just enough to be assured of themselves.....
i also love men who are real gentelmen - who hold doors, and pay things, and look after you really well....
althogh, the ones i know like that, as soon as the footie goes on, all manners and common decency go out the window

Well, I'm happy, Man Utd finally won a match at the weekend!!:whoohoo:

the only problem with living in Australia nowadays, is that i don't get enough football (sorry, soccer!) on tele - there was about 2 lines in the paper on Utd winning, that was it - and coming from manchester i find it really weird, coz they were always on tele and in the newspapers everyday. Although they do have a live match on oonce a week - if i really want to wait up until 3 in the morning to catch kick off, and its normally some pants london team:angry:

I think he heard us :wicked: seriously this guy was either blind or didn't know the rules! unless he was bribed. anyway c*** ref!

at least it was only the worthington cup. but now we have to play walsall, with no Barton (captain) and no Poom (idiot)

i love you west ham!

well looks like I may get the last laugh honey!! West Ham aint doing too good are they? But its a game of 2 seasons, so I'll save my laughing until May. But at least, you can take the Utd match as a consolation prize when you're slumming it.

we shall see, i think west ham will be in the middle of the table reigion come may but then again i am a hopelessly optimistic person when it come to west ham. (one of the faults of being a season ticket holder) ;)

Arsenal? when will someone as intelligent as me come into this thread? ;) lol i envy you people who support the successful teams. :)

good luck to weat ham tomorrow, were bottom of the table and unless we win by 3 clear goals we'll still be in the relegation zone after tomorrow, i'll be there showing my support so we'd better win.

I finally stagger into this thread. Yay.

Who's the West Ham fan? I used to play in a 6-aside team: West Hamster United :). I haven't had a chance to read all the posts in this thread but I'm glad you're all here. I staggered into the American Football thread for a joke a couple of weeks back. I just don't understand that game. When I move to the US I'll have to go to some games and get someone to explain it to me. I think its all the padding and the helmet. I'm used to seeing Rugby (not a fan of that either) though considering how injury prone Rugby is the padding etc is probably a good idea. I love footbal (soccer) becuase of the amazing skill involved, the tactics, the athleticism of it, the comraderie of the players, the civility of it relative to the other football sports. I don't think I appreciated the skill of the players until I started to play. Australia has traditionally been a cricket/rugby country (or for girls Netball/Hockey/some girls cricket)so I didn't play it in School. But now its meant to be the most represented sport with school aged children, inc. girls. I think its great. I'd love my kids to play it (one day if I have some that is ;) )

Slightly off topic - Can anyone out there tell me why they call the Baseball series in the US - The World Series? I mean, I've always had the impression it was only played by teams within the US. I've always chuckled when I hear it called the "World Series". Maybe I'm wrong. Can anyone explain?

Oh, dear, you didn't have that good a weekend at my beloved Old Trafford? The gap is closing quickly, and you'll have a fight on your hands before christmas:thumbs:

Bawax, not everyone can have as good as taste as you, m'dear;)

Larfirithwen, I've just moved to Oz from the Uk, and I'm amazed at how much people know about soccer over here. From what I got told before we left the UK, nobody knew hardly anything about the game. But most people I talk to are followers of English teams, and sometimes there knowledge can put me to shame

Daisy Gamgee
December 10th,2002, 12:46 AM
I'll grant you are at the top, but Chelsea are only 2 points adrift, and 3 points for Utd. All that needs is one loss by Arsenal and a win by Utd for them to be on equal footings. Its a season of 2 halves, and the next half looks like being a good 'un. Theres time for Arsenal to be knocked off their crown quite easily

wait who's the arsenal goalie?

on happier news DERBY BEAT WATFORD! this means the watford fan next door has gone into hiding. hehehehehe! 3-0 woo hoo! :whoohoo:
although why riggott scored I'm at a complete loss. (he's a defender or at least he was last time I watched them)

Daisy Gamgee

The Arsenal goalie is normally David Seaman but he was injured, so for the Utd match they had some foreign guy who then got injured and so they subbed him for the England Under 21 goalie (don't know his name but hes pretty cute, and thats all that matters;) )

Glad to know Derby are doing a bit better. Who's in charge there now. Is it Steve Bruce or am I thinking of the wrong team?

Hmmm.. david Seamen is kinda past it (sad but true) plus he needs a haircut!! The new foreign dude had an alright first half but we won't know how good he is till he's truly tested... And Stuart Taylor is a prospect for the future..and whaddya mean he's cute? aren't we supposed to like soccer for the skill excitement and the ability and the legs!...Ooops... I've said too much!! :naughty:

And thanks to Arsenal, drawing against Spurs, theres now only a point in it!! Lalaith, they didn't mess up too much, its only 2 points you dropped, (but its a downward spiral;) )
And who mentioned anything about legs? Of course we only watch soccer for the love of the game, nothing at all to do with men in shorts lol

February 4th,2003, 08:25 PM
that'll be an interesting match up then, Derby can't score, west ham can't defend, they'd be better off with 22 clowns on the pitch. :)

hmmm.....clowns...... that just might work! lol

February 7th,2003, 09:01 PM
i think thats how it'll work with west ham as well, i can see at least 5 big players leaving when we go down, i think we'll be in the first division for a long time. mecry

Bawax
February 25th,2003, 05:38 PM
theres an old saying, your only as good as your last game.

thant means, derby are rubbish, man u can only draw against second rate opposition and west ham are the only one of the three to pick up 3 points. :p ;) lol

still going down though *grumble, grumble, grumble* lol

Eowyn
February 25th,2003, 05:43 PM

February 25th,2003, 05:47 PM
lol sorry dear, i couldn't resist it. i do recall the last 2 times west ham and derby met at our ground, one was a draw and the other a 5-1 hammering by my team. :)

do you not have any hopes for derby getting promoted this season then?

Eowyn

"woo hoo west ham, draw away to everton was a good result"

We should have stuffed your lot, and I'm very annoyed!!!
But by all accounts we played very poorly anyway, so we didnt deserve all three points. I still think your lot will stay up. And I really doubt that we can afford Joe Cole, regardless of whether the Hammers go down or not... Shame, we need a player like him to cement our position as reborn giants!

And Eowyn, sorry to say it but all hope for Derby left when my 'look-a-like', Malcolm Christie, walked out of that door and took it with him! Perrennial Division One nobodies is what the 'Khamul Football Fortune Cookie' says! mecry

lol Personally I dont think I look anything like Malcolm Christie... A mate of mine said it in work, we were having a discussion about lookalikes... Some people can see the resemblence, others cant. I think its just coz I'm lazy and thus dont shave as often as I should... and sometimes my hair looks like his (but not now because I had it cut short last week). My mate, Maxi_T_The_Cavetroll on this site, REALLY DOES look the spitting image of John Terry though! And his brother looks like Gary Neville roflmao We're going to post photos of all three of us into 4-4-2 magazine to see if any lookalikes get printed, then we'll know who is the best resemblence (it wont be me!) lol
