This is something that really bugs me.
What did happen to the diary that was found in Bali's room. Sure Gimli takes it because Gandalf says that he wants to look at it later, but it is never mentioned again.
Surley Gimli goes through his pack from time to time and would have seen it, did it get lost along the way? Is it a boo- boo, or was it just a way to keep the Fellowship in Balin's chamber a bit longer so that the orcs could trap them and having served it's purpose was written out?

What are your thoughts?

Perhaps it was taken but having served its purpose it wasnt mentioned again. I dont think the general public would have liked to have sat and listened to Gandalf reading the diary for 5 minutes. It just wasnt necessary to the story after Balins Tomb.

If youve read the 'Secret Diaries' then you'll know that Aragorn is the original pervy hobbit fancier.

down Pil......;) you two can discuss it in PMs
i think that the book wasnt needed again...its a detail that wasnt neccessary to moving the story forward.....things like that tend to get dropped in movies....

In actual fact it was dropped in the book as well, which is what I was intrested in.
Gandalf gives the book to Gimli and then it is never heard of again. I supose it's what Aragorn_Isildur said, it just served it's purpose and was forgotten.

I gues you're right, The book was just used to stall the Fellowship and then wasn't needed again.

I'm sure Gimli would have studied it deeply, but I don't think he would have the mind and time to do so in the middle of the War of The Ring. So he probably took it home with him and then studied it.

In my mind, I'm fairly certain that Gandalf planned to look through Balin's book at some future time following the events of the War. I really don't think that Gimli had the time to look through it ... he was always busy fighting or running throughout the saga.

It certainly was used as a plot device though ... not so much to delay them (remember ... the book and the movie differ on timeframes ... I'm speaking from the literary perspective). The book was used to exhibit exactly how horrible a place Moria was and to get the reader prepared for what was to come ...
