Well if you are member of the month or a mod you can get a custom avatar of your choice. Also if you become a subscriber. So most likely these a custom avatars that you are seeing. Hope I have been of some help.

And also if you become a staff member of any part of the site. And if you post 20000 posts and above. (I love using this example. It overwhelms pple) lol Adun, if you reach 10000 posts, we should hold an honarary celebration for you! lol

Subscribers will have a silver ring next to their avatar too.

Well.....let's start shall we?

1st. You never know about the Member of the Month thing, it all depends on how you carry yourself and interact with others on the boards.

2nd. If you can't subscribe, that's okay...being a member that contributes to forum topics and has fun is a great way to contribute to the community, and is very much appreciated.

3rd. We do have moderator positions come available now and again, and when posted, all are welcome to apply.

Now, as to it being fair? Well....there are many many, many other Tolkien sites that charge a fee for what we gladly give away!! There are several Tolkien communities where the basics like a generic avatar, private messaging system, email to friends feature, and even the signature feature are items that are restricted to paying members.

Let's not forget to mention the thousands of high quality photo and art images that we make available without any site markings etc., the hundreds of video audio, etc. downloads, and access to other sections like the Armoury, etc. that are available without cost!!

Heck at the moment, you have a fairly decent selection of avatars that we've made available for your use....All you have to do is edit your options and select one!! :p

So see my friend, considering what the site costs to run, and what we give away, we feel that our Subscription program is quite fair!!!

I used to belong to another site that allowed custom avatars for all. Unfortunately, everybody chose to use animated avatars, and this made the site incredibly slow, especially for those of us with prehistoric PCs. So this system is OK with me!

Why thank you Arninquelote!! :)

And just so nobody thinks I may have been just making that stuff up earlier...hehe.........I thought I'd copy and paste this up from a site that shall go Un-Named. This is the kind of thing that other site's are offering with their "Premier Membership", compare this with what we offer with our Subscription Program and you will see just how "fair" we are! lol What do I get with a premium membership?

* New Feature! - You may create your own Tolkien-related title.

- You get access to the buddy list feature that allows you to keep track of your favorite ringbearer members.

- You are able to have a custom signature for use with forum topic posting and private messaging.

- You are able to upload your own custom avatar for use with forum posting or choose one from our ever expanding gallery of avatars.

- Your post counts are un-hidden and displayed.

- You gain the ability to search for forum posts by other members.

- You gain access to view the smiley library, which contains an ever-increasing array of emoticons to add to your forum or private message posts.

More features will be added over time, so your membership will only improve as the site improves. If you decide that you'd rather wait until premium membership has more to offer, be sure to check back here often to watch for updates.

Anyway, custom avatars aren't main things we should be looking out for in the forums ;). It's what we learn and contribute in the forums that matter. So Mana, don't worry too much about the subscription deals. We're here to have fun! :hooray:

yeah i totally agree Winster, it is all about quality over quantity.
It shouldn't matter if you got a pritty little picture next to your post or not, the only thing that should matter is that your being nice to other people and posting quality posts not jibberish

Perhaps the number of choices provided for avatars could be increased? It's nicer to have more to choose from:)

They were updated and added to a while ago using the rest of the paintings in our Art Gallery, that added about 77 avatars to the ones already on offer....I was the one who did the gathering hehe unfortunatly there weren't may paintings depicting images from earlier on the story especially before the chapter on Weathertop, that's why the images are fewer before that event in the story, not for any other reason.

If you find paintings depicting events in the LOTR earlier on in the story and the paintings are portrait you can send them in to Illuvatar@warofthering.net and request them to be made into avatars.
