I just wondered if there were any Terry Pratchett fans out there, i know there must be because every book of the Discworld series he releases goes at least top 5, usually 1. If anybody is a fan, whats your favourite?

my faves were the first two, the Colour of Magic in particular....i love all the witches ones....Witches Abroad cracks me up...the thought of Nanny Ogg loose in "forn parts" is a terror :elfeek: lol, and i love that bit where the vampire gets hit in quick sucession by a shutter, a ballistic garlic sausage and Greebo....and i liked Lords and Ladies......a really different take on the fairies....actually...i like most of them lol roflmao lol

I've just started on Interesting Times but I got The colour of Magic not long ago and I now know that that is the first one so I'll be reading that as well but I might as well finish Interesting Times first. Its quite good. shame there is no chapters as I usually try to get to a certain point in a book before I stop reading.

I read thief of time and I thought it was quite good. definately worth reading!

my favourite would be.....any involving the witches! carpe jugulum is very good.

he has a new book called "night watch" coming out in November.

has anyone read any of the science of the discworld books?

Aragorn Isildur
September 25th,2002, 01:55 AM
I just bought the second science book but i havent started reading it yet. Thief of Time is good if a little obscure, not the usual tone in my opinion. Its about Time's son :)

I used to just rely on my bro' having all the discworld books to borrow when i wanted but ihaven't read one for a while, and now both my bro' and his discworld collection (he has like every book, in paperback and a few duplicates in hardback) is now back in England so if i want to read one i have to go buy them

He's fine in small doses, and we get along well (plus hes a huge fan of LOTR - he's been reading yearly since he was 9) but I normally have a bathroom to myself and just having to share it with anybody is bad enough but when you have to share it with a bloke, its 10 times worse!! do they not know how to put the toilet seat back down after they have finished??lol

I just reread "Witches Abroad" and noticed something... I can't believe I didn't see it first time actually lol

When the witches are travelling on the river they see a slimmy creature on a log that says that today issss hissss birhday (I don't know the English words, reading it in Bulgarian). The scene is just like when the fellowship see Gollum on a log... glowing eyes, etc... it does nothing just gets hit with an oar... but it's funny that its there... just felt like sharing this lol

Been a big Pratchett fan since Reaper Man came out. That is, I was reading a review of it in a magazine and thought, 'sounds good to me!'. Started with Eric. Loved that, then went through all his published works and blah de blah really :-)

Personally, the Discworld books I like the most are the 'Guards' books; 'Guards, Guards', Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, Fifth Elephant and Night Watch. Sam Vimes is someone I would love to meet in real life, if you will.

I have noticed of late that his books have become somewhat darker (a trend that began with Carpe Jugulum in my opinion). Hell, some of the stuff that happens in Night Watch is just plain scary and unpleasant. I think that he has hit his form well for the last few books, achieving a level of quality not seen since Small Gods (which, if we ignore all the 'guards' books, is some of his best work).

I would point out that my slant on what a good Discworld book is has little to do with the amount of overt humour in the text. Stuff like Small Gods, Night Watch and Feet of Clay have very interesting stories, some interesting themes backing the plot up, and can be read at more than one level - with some of the best humour arriving in the form of clever conceits and comic vignettes, as opposed to 'funny, haha' one-liners.

Probably the weakest discworld book in my opinion was The Last Contenent. I thought that was a mess of a book.

Eowyn
March 20th,2003, 11:44 PM
hmmmmm.....I'm reading that at the moment. It's ok but not his best. I agree that the guards ones are best and I to would love to meet Sam Vimes. :) I also like the witches (Granny is brilliant - I'm learning Headology)

Daeron
March 21st,2003, 10:35 AM
Granny Weatherwax annoys the hell out of me I'm afraid :-) It's a compliment to Pratchett that he can create characters that I can 'buy into' emotionally, either positively or negatively however.

Mirkgirl
March 21st,2003, 02:02 PM
Aw I love the witches ones... they're the best... I love both Granny and Nanny... the young ones are the annoying ones, but annoying in the good sense as they add to the whole picture.

Besides the witches, the other brilliant book is "Pyramids".. the rest are great as well, but they simply can't reach these....

i love soul music...i tried reading some of the others but couldn't gte into them....might try again as that was about 2 years ago now.....

i have discworld noir the computer game and its great.....is it based on a story if you see what i mean? or is it just a random computer game?

don't know I don't have any of them! I'll have to get one though!

irky I liked Pyramids although my favourite guild is the assassins guild!
BG try reading reaper man. or the other thats in the death trilogy. Death is cool and I think he was in soul music so try reading more of the books with death in! that sounds depressing. hhhmmmm......with the character death in! lol ;)

I love the Discworld books! Terry Pratchett has got such a great sense of humor! I think my favourite character has to be Death LOL :) Sounds a bit silly, but I think he's lovely innocent and in his own way very funny...

I think my favourite book is Mort or Wyrd Sisters

I quite liked it... and Maurice sure is one of my fave Pratchett chars now

DEATH IS BEST CHARACTER. *trying to sound ominous*

MY favorite Prachett books would have to be the first three of the City Watch books, Men At Arms, Guards Guards and Feet of Clay. They were the first ones I read, and got me hooked on Prachett indefinitly.

Plus the mental image of Nobby in drag is too funny for words. :)

i haven't needed keeping an eye on too much lately, i've been a bit elusive for the past couple of months, then again, if i am still watched like this i might have to do something to deserve it. :naughty: ;)

i'm onto the last continent now and what the hell is happening to the librarian?

Eowyn
March 7th,2004, 06:31 PM
yeah, where have you been hiding? and why does your location say "under a damp and smelly rock"?

I'm reading Wee free men. I've spotted at least one LotR joke so far lol

as for the librarian, i have no idea... I really can't remember what happens....

*wanders off to find the book*

Bawax
March 7th,2004, 06:42 PM
he isn't well and keeps changing when he sneezes at the moment, i am only a quarter of the way into it at the moment so things might change. :)

i've been elusive lately Eowyn, i have changed jobs and i ain't getting too much time to myself but in a couple of months i should get as much time off as i have to work.

did you ever change your mind about marrying me?

Catz
March 7th,2004, 07:29 PM
what from EEEEEEK?
or was that someone else? i dunno, i lose track lol
no im pretty sure Eowyn was EEEEEEEk ;)
and if you want to find out whats up with the librarian, KEEP reading lol
i DID have to laugh at the description of Mrs Whitlows outfit as less of a bikini and more a New Zealand ;) lol

Catz
March 8th,2004, 09:04 PM

err, no he hasn't been a sofa, he was a deck chair but their just getting on a boat off the island, he may be normal again but then again he may be a penguin.

i was refering to the insinuation that i always have someone to elude, it so obviously not true

lol I remember that book now. It's a good book. As for weefree men I suppose I shoul dhave expected it really. Let Pratchett lose near fairytales and he'll come up with..... well.....anything lol

Catz
March 9th,2004, 02:40 AM
its the second option Eowyn ;)
guess it saves on time and effort if you adopt a blanket approach to these things ;) lol
:catz:

Eowyn
March 10th,2004, 06:07 PM
I guess so, and statistically you stand a better chance using the blanket method lol

Bawax
March 13th,2004, 02:02 PM
the blanket method works for me. :)

it'd be convenient anyway Eowyn, i'm not a clingy man, all i'd want is a couple of hours worth a week, i'm not a needy man. ;) :p

i still don't know whats going on in the book i'm on, Rincewind is on top form though, he just got captured by watchmen.

Bawax
March 20th,2004, 09:16 PM
hehehe, clingy isn't a word generally used when people talk about me but thats a good thing i'm sure most people would agree, being near me for about a week annoys many people, normally for any one of about a dozen reasons but i won't go into them here.

Carpe Jugulum is going well at the moment, i'm over halfway through it now, the Pixies are the best, if i'm like any character it has to be them. lol

the books picked up speed but its still a little dull, i'd put down as one of the worst in the series i've read. :(

bring on the last page, hopefully something might have happened by then.

i think its just cos it doesnt follow any of the established characters, its kinda slow and you dont have thier familiar quirks to laugh at.
ive just re read Moving Pictures..........thats REALLY funny ;)

yeah maybe thats the case, i know its seeming like a bit of a struggle to get through, i do like the stupid vampire iconographer who keeps dusting himself with the flash and Mr Tulip is getting better with each sentence.

Vampire dusting himself? That sounds familiar... which book is that?

Eowyn
April 13th,2004, 12:28 AM
The Truth. The vampire's name is Otto if I've remembered correctly, which would be a first for me

oh, slightly off topic but B thanks for the point ;) (Derby v WesyHam at the wkd) we REALLY needed that!

ok mods I'm back on topic...i enjoyed the truth but Aranel informs me there's a book I should read before I get all the in jokes. she's lending it to me next term... I'll let you know what it's called ;)

Bawax
April 13th,2004, 07:40 PM
yep thats the one eowyn and he is called otto but thats about all i remember about him other then he comes from Uberwald.

*grumble, grumble* west ham are pants, i can't see how derby are so low down the table though, they were good.

i don't know anything about another book first, i've read almost all the discworld ones so chances are i've possibly stumbled across it but i still don't get that much in the book.

Eowyn
April 14th,2004, 05:20 PM
I don't think it was a pratchett book  she's back tomorrow so I'll ask her then.

B, Derby are low down 'cos we keep getting really bad decisions from the ref's and we can't score.... that and the many injuries and the fact most the team is under 20 lol at least you don't have relegation to worry about!

we've discovered that pratchett likes monty python humour, unfortunately I'd read most the books before discovering python but some of them are much funnier now ;)

yup... Has anyone read theif of time recent enough to remember if there was a joke about Titanic? we watched the film last night and one of my friends thinks there was a joke in their about polar bears on the iceberg?

Bawax
April 28th,2004, 09:51 PM
yeah i just read it Eowyn, there was a little one about how these polar bears were off to the south pole where theres penguins aplenty but they got rammed by a huge iron boat with a dodgy soundtrack. or something like that anyway. :)

the book turned out to be ok, i've read worse discworld books but it was a little average, i'm now onto the thief of time, it seems good after the first 70 or so pages.

April 29th,2004, 02:51 PM

Ah, I loved The Thief of Time. The first Discworld book I read was The Truth, so I had a bit of a skewed idea of what they were like. I have't read many, but the ones I have read I really liked.

I love Death's character ;)
