Considering how a lot of things were done in Fotr, do you think The Paths of the Dead will be handled well? Do you think that sequence will be spiced up a little? Are you excited to see it?
Any chat about it welcome here if you all like.

Im definately looking forward to it! Judging by the effects on Gollum they should be able to come up with something really special. Maybe Haldir could cameo as a dead troll ;)

I was thinking when I read it that it went by rather quickly.....but I imagine with all the action going on in rotk they won't be able to expand it too much.

Just a few reeds and puddles with groping Haldirs. Imagine, an elf with muddy hair!

Well if Jackson's looking for a way to make the the Paths extremely scary...terrifying even....'groping Haldirs' would definately get the job done....just typing those words makes me shudder....

Haldir is scary, but isn't he a "bit" too piggy?
And I think that the Paths of the Dead are to be done quickly, otherwise the effect would be lost.

Aragorn_isildur! The paths of the dead are the ones that aragorn etc take when they want to get to Gondor quicker. Your thinking of the dead marshes....there were limited numbers of reeds on the paths of the dead. But which one was Nessa referring to? :p

Oh Sweet Mother of Jesus! :o
*screws head back on properly* Oh course Pil....I need some sleep judging by that mishap!
Yeah, the army of the dead should be pretty special, i hope!

I meant Aragorn's Paths of the Dead, not the Dead Marshes....although I'm sure they'll be great too.

Yes The Paths of the Dead has the potential to be truly terrifying. That feeling of dread, the tingle down your spine, sweat dripping down your back, a nausea creeping over you, feet getting heavy, vision swimming...........yes I loved this bit of the book.......reminded me of HP Lovecraft actually.
Lets hope they don't bottle it. :-)
Catz
July 22nd,2002, 02:41 AM
Mmm youre right....that part of the book definitely has that "nameless dread" Lovecraftian thing goin' on
and i dont think they'll muck it up...PJ has always loved horror, i just hope he stays this side of subtle...which i think he will....
just keep Haldir away:rolleyes: lol roflmao lol

Yes, I think (hope) Jackson has enough taste not to make it, you know....cheezy. I 've never seen any of his horror films so I don't know what to expect.

he might spice it up a bit more than say i, a complete i-hate-horror-movies person, wouls have liked, but i'm sure it will be within reason.
Nessa
July 22nd,2002, 05:13 AM
You hate horror movies? I hate traditional horror movies....you know, the kind that aren't scary.
I would like to shiver a bit during these scenes, I just would prefer not to have something icky (haldir) jump out from behind anything..."boo," you know?

roflmao lol roflmao lol Yes nessa! That would be a nightmare to all! lol haha I just can't stop laughing of the thought of that actually happening!
But I have a great resistance to getting frightened after a horror movie! Nothing has scared me besides.... ugh... Jeppers Creepers! Everyone says that of any horror movie jeepers Creeps should not be one I'm afraid of - but UGH! It scared me nearly to death (not to mention disgusted me) Have you guys seen it?
Sorry got out of subject again hehe lol

July 22nd,2002, 05:23 AM
I saw Jeepers Creepers. Terrible movie really, and yes it did scare me quite a bit....although I hadn't admitted it to anyone before now. The Mothman Prophecies...now thats creepy....
Look at me drag my own thread off topic!;)

i dont know. i hate getting caught up in them and then you cant turn away, and whenever something scary happens my heart spazzes out an i get all full of adrenaline. some people like that feeling but i'll pass...
Catz
July 23rd,2002, 12:14 AM
well, just to add my own ten cents worth off topic ;) ...the scariest movie ive seen in ages was The Others....and not a drop of gore in sight....and its that sort of phsycological fear that i think PJ will go for in the paths of the dead....at least i hope so...
:catz:
Nessa
July 23rd,2002, 12:23 AM
I do hope PJ goes for the psychological scariness rather than thrusting corpses in our faces...
OT: I didn't like The Others...it didn't scare and I predicted the ending....but it was better than a lot slasher films that tend to be so popular.
Pil
July 23rd,2002, 08:50 AM
I agree with u Nessa. In the book we rarely get a good look at the dead army...they were not supposed to be IN OUR FACE...just always there...on their heels...mwahahahaha!
Catz
July 23rd,2002, 11:13 AM
mmmmm.....i think all the power of the scene lies in subtlety....but i think PJ knows that....i'll just keep my fingies crossedlol roflmao lol

I trust he'll do a really good job. He managed to make moria scary...even BEFORE the balrog came...the bit where everything goes COMPLETELY dark...ooo... :flamer:

I'm looking forward to hearing Legolas's line regarding the Paths: "I do not fear the dead." Sounds so damn cool...
Pil
July 23rd,2002, 08:16 PM
It DOES doesn't it?! veryhappy
And how Giblett (Gimli) won't talk about it to the hobbits in Ithilien (?), but leggy can, cos HE WEREN'T SCARED!!!!
Nessa
July 23rd,2002, 08:23 PM
Now lets be fair! Elves, being immortal and all, naturally wouldn't fear the dead. I do wonder just how terrified Gimli will look though.....

Most males tend to turn those situations to there advantage, Aragorn. ;)
Anyway, I don't want cheap thrills at Paths of the Dead! I wonder how many times one can say that in one thread.....

I LOVED the others! If that scares you catz, then you should watch the ones i see! Ugh they give me the creeps. When I was 6 I saw a movie called Pinochio's revenge (or however you spell it)
and its scared me so bad that I threw away every doll I had! STill scares me a tad :) ;)
*Suddenly can hear the faint sound of Jeppers Creepers being played* *GASP* you know what happens next - heh heh heh lol

July 24th,2002, 02:12 AM
What? Huh? Oh yeah!
Paths of the Dead...creepy...with ghosts and stuff...yeah....
I give up, I've been trying to keep it on track mostly, but I can't help but to succumb to off-topicness......
Ronin
July 24th,2002, 02:18 AM
Paths of the Dead, haven't actually thought about how it would be handled until just now. agree with Nessa tho, thoroughly stoked to hear Leggy stand against the dead. PJ has credibility in driving home horror and terror...so, to be honest, not much fear that there will be any camp in that scene.
*PM me to realise just how good The Others is and just how bad Jeepers Creepers is.
Catz
July 24th,2002, 05:27 AM
the thing with The Others, as it applies to this topic, is that it wasnt in your face horror, which these days so often translates into heaps of goreit wasnt leap out of your seat and scream, just disquiet.....i find gorey movies funny usually...what i find horrifying is the slow build up, when you know something is wrong, but youre not quite sure what.....when you start to jump at shadows, when the filmmaker engages your own imagination to create fears that they could never put on screen, cos theyre personal to you...thats horror, the knowledge that you have to look eventually.....as i say psychological, rather than biological...and thats what im hoping for here, and like Ronin, am pretty sure i'll get

July 25th,2002, 05:23 AM
Eeeeexactly. :)
So if the paths are good, the dead terrifying the dark armies should really be something to see......if it is shown to us, that is. I don't see why not, would be kind of pointless to go through all the trouble of summoning the damn dead and then not even see them in acton. lol Should be excellent, the King of the Dead breaking his staff..........

I was reading an article on the "Paths of the Dead" (maybe it was on TORn). Anyway ... the article alluded to the fact that Frodo would be tempted by the submerged dead into claiming the Ring. This could get a little eerie if done right ...
Pil
July 28th,2002, 06:36 PM
well...that's a bit stupid really...seeing as frodo never actually walked the paths of the dead... lol
A! Elbereth
July 28th,2002, 07:12 PM
He's talking about the dead Marshes I'm sure - he's just a little confused. But thanks Algamesh, thats interesting. Now I'm really excited 'bout TTT
Algamesh
July 28th,2002, 07:22 PM
Yeah ... it's the Mere of Dead Faces where Frodo encounters the Dead ... but the article was under an article about the Paths of the Dead. Guess I didn't clarify that, eh? ;)

July 28th,2002, 10:29 PM
really? hmmmm now I'm really confused
Catz
July 28th,2002, 11:35 PM
yeah....it seems to be a really common mixup....the DEAD marshes, and the paths of the DEAD.....actually i cant wait to see the marshes either....reckon that'll be worth seeing:cool:

This is very off subject, but its a quick question and I didnt want to waste a thread on it: On FOTR when Sam freaks out about taking another step, where he says, this is the farthest from home, I've ever been.... Where's the truck? could someone PM me and tell me when to look, because I want to find it, and I can't see it lol

Seeing the scenes in the Hallls of Moria, I hope these will be just as great. The suspence should be breathtaking and hopefully in the end the black fleet will be as real as they can make it. The CGI so far has been very good.
Pil
August 15th,2002, 11:52 AM
Ooo the black fleet...hadn't given much thought to that. It is a wonderful part of the book. You finally think that all hope is lost...new forces arriving in their mass of black ships...then the banner unfurls...flying in the wind...and the king Elessar stands pround at the head of his army on the greatest of the ships...i can't wait! :loveyou: veryhappy

Well, this thread has not been talked on in a while:) So i'll respond to this. I thought that the Paths of the Dead was done very well. Not exactly how I saw it, but still convincing, and it had the deathlike feeling.
