I was debating on where exactly to put this, but seeing as how it deals with artwork directly, I thought this might be a good place.

Does anyone own this in their collection? If you don't and enjoy creative artwork, this is a must have. I looked through the whole book in its entirety today at the bookstore and was amazed at what I saw. The art is so refreshing and innovative, it's not like Howe, the Hildebrandts, Lee, or Nasmith, this is from more expressionistic artists. A couple of images stuck in my head that really impressed me were the Ents storming Isengard, the riders of Rohan and soldiers of Gondor, and a very simple but absolutely remarkable piece depicting the many halls of Menegroth.

Now, granted for an encyclopedia, it was full of flaws that any Tolkien fan could pick out easily, but then again, so are most non-Tolkien authored materials out now. I wouldn't buy it for literal refrences, but for the artwork. I plan to go back and get my own copy myself.

Again, incredible book.

*Puts on trout proof armor* ;)

I apologize, I should have included some of the information. The publisher is Simon & Schuster, the author is David Day, who could have done a little more research. So if you do slap anyone catz, slap the day-lights (snicker) out of Mr. Day.

It is a great book. It is published under about 10 different titles. Guide, encyclopedia, Bestiary and the on eI have at the moment is called characters from Tolkien.

Most of the art is ink or pencil, it is very good by such artists as John Blanche etc. Actually a lot of them now do a lot of work for Games Workshop, it is quie a brooding book.

One you might want to check out if you're into Tolkien as an illustrator is "J.R.R. Tolkien.. Artist and Illustrator" by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. Very good book showing Tolkien's early work through to LOTR etc... Elvish devices etc. Fatty will testify to the greatness of this ...we both bought it in Glasgow!! (actually he saw my copy and just HAD to get it!!;) )
Actually, I "borrowed" the original sketch of the Doors of Durin from this and had the Elven tree on it tattooed onto my back!!! Painful but worth it!!
