Good heavens! This has got to be the most complicated Do-It-Yourself make-up project I've ever seen! :o
The 29 Steps to Braid Legolas' Hair (http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/legolas.htm)
Lady of the Rings
May 2nd,2003, 03:26 PM
:o lol :o Wow! That is complicated! Imagine going through all that! But then again..anything to have elf hair ;)

May 2nd,2003, 09:08 PM
Oh My!! :o lol
I could never sit still long enough for all that to be done to my hair. It looks fantastic when it's finished though!
Hobbit
May 2nd,2003, 09:49 PM
It looks really great. I could ask some hairdresser to do that lol
But then again I don't think long hair will look good on me.
Brego
May 2nd,2003, 10:07 PM
Hmm..... seems like an awful lot of hard work and effort, But hey if u can sit still long enuff fair do's to ya lol
Mirkgirl
May 2nd,2003, 10:12 PM
EEEk I can hardly sit down while I get a normal haircut.... I've had my hair done proffesional a couple of times, but it wasn;t anything like that... not quite helped by the fact that my hair has its own mind about how it should stay either...
Anyway isn't it easier to buy a wig like Legolas hair? Won't have to grow hair too
Amoraq
May 2nd,2003, 10:24 PM
Ahhh, I could never sit still that long. Talk about complicated! lol
Jeez, I can hardly understand the instructions...
Luvara
May 3rd,2003, 07:48 PM
:elfeek: jeez! but it did look good!!

May I ask a question about Legolas' hair? (apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, but it's something I've been thinking about for a while now)
Did any of you guys think that his hair got darker in TT? I remember watching FOTR after seeing TT, and thought,"His hair has gotten more blonde/golden since FOTR. Am I crazy, or did they make his hair darker for TT? Did anyone notice this?
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 7th,2003, 06:27 AM
No it's definitely the right place to post this. Well, i'm not too observant, so I haven't noticed any apparent changes in his hair lol
Celebrían
May 7th,2003, 06:31 AM
Okay good. I just remember looking at pics from FOTR and pics from TT, and "unless my eyes are cheated by some spell", his hair has become more golden! Perhaps he picked up some Clairol between Amon Hen and Emyn Muil?
Bonos-Girl
May 7th,2003, 05:59 PM
i don't think it would do though, they shot all three mvies simultaneously so if his hair did change colour it would be throughout the same movie just in different scenes as well as in differnet films....
Celebrían
May 7th,2003, 08:02 PM
I forgot about that :duh:. Maybe it was just the lighting.....the scenes that I am thinking of are the Amon Hen scenes (his hair here looks very light) and the scene in TT when Legolas and Aragorn argue (hair looks very golden). Now that I think about it, his hair seemed darker in the Council scenes, but again, it could be the lighting.....or, a more likely explanation, I could just be crazy. :p
Luvara
May 8th,2003, 08:03 PM
does elves use shampoo?
Kenzie
May 9th,2003, 12:09 AM
i would like to thinks so lol (or somthing like that) ... if they don't wash it with anything they do a good job hiding it's greaseness lol
Luvara
May 9th,2003, 12:19 AM
lol I think you're right! lol
Kenzie
May 9th,2003, 12:38 AM
*shudders* it would be kinda scary if they didn't lol
Luvara
May 9th,2003, 09:00 AM
yeah! then they would have smelled worse than... an orc! :elfeek: lol
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 9th,2003, 04:46 PM
well yeah, I'm sure they wash their hair in any case, with or without shampoo... lol
Time to get back to the discussion of those wonderful braids ;)
Celebrían
May 9th,2003, 08:26 PM
I wonder....do you think they re-do their braids everyday, or do they just leave them alone?
Kenzie
May 9th,2003, 09:06 PM
i would thing they would need to re-do them... because after a day of filming them may get pretty frizzy.... but it depends on the scene to... wether they were supose to look messy or not
Tirithel
May 9th,2003, 09:50 PM
Mmmm, wax, definitely lots of wax, to keep the braids from frizzifying. Of course, elves didn't have wax, but modernday wig dressers do, so ya know...lol
Kenzie
May 9th,2003, 10:09 PM
yhea that would explain it!! lol
Luvara
May 9th,2003, 10:18 PM
I think they need to re-do them every day, when it's windy and rainy and so on!
Kenzie
May 9th,2003, 10:52 PM
yhea and i'm sure (like say for the battle scenes) when he needs to look frazzled they just pull out strands here and there
Luvara
May 10th,2003, 12:28 AM
yes! but what a job!!! I'm really impressed! :o
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 10th,2003, 06:26 AM
I wonder how many of those wigs do they actually have? lol They'd need some spares cuz I'm sure wigs like this do get ruined easily. lol
Celebrían
May 10th,2003, 08:16 AM
I wasn't going to say this, but what the heck. When I asked that question I meant it in the context of real elves (I didn't mean for the movie, does this make sense?) What I meant was do you think elves have to re-do their braids frequently, or do they leave them alone? lol What do you think about that? Opinions, theories, dissertations?
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 10th,2003, 09:32 AM
lollollol
NOW this makes sense. I was really wondering why on earth were you guys talking about braiding a WIG. lollollol
Well, I suppose they have to re-do their braids, when they wash their hair, so it'll be thoroughly cleansed. Hmm... they do unbraid their hair, don't they...?
Celebrían
May 10th,2003, 10:02 AM
lol Yeah, that's what I meant, Win. I thought it was so funny that my question took off in a whole nother direction.....lol
I guess they would unbraid it for washing, and then rebraid later.......what do you think?
Bonos-Girl
May 10th,2003, 12:05 PM
then when the braids came out their hair would be all really crimped though...and elf with crimped hair..well...its a possibility! lol
Kenzie
May 10th,2003, 03:05 PM
maye be they do somthing specail with they're hair to straighten it out... (like tie rocks to the end of it!!! lol lol j/k) but i would say that they re-do they're braids about every 2 to three days if not everyday. cause their braids are never frizzy and after you sleep on them they get pretty messed up.
Luvara
May 10th,2003, 10:49 PM
I don't think they do it every day, it's too much job, but every second? :huh:lol
Kenzie
May 10th,2003, 11:20 PM
well ya never do... maybe they get up extra earle to do it!!! lol
Luvara
May 10th,2003, 11:24 PM
lol does elves need to sleep at all? ;) j/k lol
Catz
May 11th,2003, 01:04 AM
no actually they dont ;) they memory walk instead ;)

Tirithel
May 11th,2003, 10:30 AM

I'm glad I didn't have to make those wigs. I'd probably have messed it up. lol
Bonos-Girl
May 11th,2003, 06:47 PM
feel glad you didn't have to wear the wig either. i hate having to wear wigs...the whole of last week for pirates of penzance. yech! lol they were horrible...little bunches with ringlets...yech yech yech yech yech!
Amoraq
May 11th,2003, 07:44 PM
Yeah, that too. It'd be terribly annoying...though I suppose they'd make an effort to make the wigs comfortable.
Kenzie
May 11th,2003, 09:47 PM
never had to wear a wig!!! i didn't really know they were uncomfortable
Tirithel
May 12th,2003, 02:22 AM
Completely off topic- hey BG- you were in Penzance? They just did that play here a bit ago...Ooooh eerie coincidence (Twilight Zone theme plays: do do do do do do do do...)
When I had super long hair I used to be pretty good with braids. It's been my discovery that everything is a variation on either the classic braid or the French Braid, and I could pull off a lot of nifty stuff with my hair. But that whole "fishtail" thing he's got going down the back of his head is beyond me...eh!
Bonos-Girl
May 12th,2003, 08:20 AM
yep..i was in pirates....we had almost sold out every night! lol
i have long hair...have always done apart from a year or two ago when i cut it to dress up like columbia from rocky horror. I never do anything with my hair though...i'm not the most artistically inclined person! lol

i'd lov to have elvish hair... either straight or with some wave... they never seem to have bad hair days!!! lol
Amoraq
May 13th,2003, 02:08 AM
my hair is pretty long and straight...i never do anything with it though...dunno what to do.
I'd love to have elven hair..i bet it wouldn't get all tangled! lol

lol That's kinda what I thought, since elves are not subject to age or disease, one would think they wouldn't have bad hair days? lol But then in the scene after Amon Hen, Legolas' hair has the "wind-blown" look......so who knows....the mystery continues....;) lol
Tirithel
May 14th,2003, 05:42 AM
Yes, but that was the elven magic thing going for the sexy wind-tossed look. Yup, BG is right. Magic plus special shampoo and lots of detangler...;)
Celebrían
May 14th,2003, 05:45 AM
Nothing wrong with the wind-blown look.....I kinda like it :naughty:

Let's get back to Leggy's hair before this thread gets rated R! lol
I love those two tiny braids at each side. I think they're cute lol Unfortunately, my hair is too slippery to be braided :(
Celebrían
May 14th,2003, 07:11 PM
lol Indeed Win!
About the neat side braids.....did you know they are functional as well as beautiful? The reason his hair is braided on the sides like that is to prevent his hair from getting caught when he shoots an arrow.....ouch! :o The article I read this in was very interesting.
Beleriel
May 14th,2003, 10:18 PM
OOh.. I never knew that.
I KNEW I would learn something if I came into this thread! ;) lol
Wait till I tell my mate EG.... she wears HER hair like that... I wonder if she does it so she doesnt catch it in HER bow!
Mental note to self: I will ASK her next time I see her! lol
Celebrían
May 14th,2003, 10:28 PM
Yeah, the guy who wrote it is an archer, and explained to people who thought the braids were too much, that they serve a real purpose in archery. He said that he does the same thing!

wow! I wonder if the rest of his hair serves a special function? Not that it needs to because it's just gorgeous

OK....I'm sad....I've actually done that. It took me about an hour. But then again, I've got reasonably short hair. I normally tend to leave most of my hair free, but take a section from the side of my head - just above the ear - and braid it into one long, small tight braid. Doing the same on the other side, I either fasten it at the back of the head with a clip, or plait it into a herring bone plait - that 'fish thing' Legolas does.
Kenzie
May 15th,2003, 09:05 PM

Aren't the little side braids pretty much just little French braids? Cornrows? I've put my hair in cornrows before and boy was that a pain in the butt. Since my hair's so short, it's near impossible to keep the braids tight without using gobs of wax or pomade or something. They were functional, however- kept my hair outta my face for days. Of course, I'm not much of an archer...
Elfdaughter
May 16th,2003, 09:09 PM
Kind of, but since there is only one each side.....
Kenzie
May 16th,2003, 09:18 PM
yhea i've had cornrows before too and it was a pin in the but getting them even and the same amount of hair in each row

what I dont understand is how his plaits always stay so neat looking.... I mean, I have to redo my plaits every couple of weeks as they start to come undone at the bottom, or knotty at the top....
(im sure my hair is getting thinner at the sides, always having plaits in!)
Winyaél Greenleaf
May 19th,2003, 03:41 PM
Well, it's elvish hair, naturally it ought to stay neat lol I'm sure they get the wig changed after every few hours or each scene or something ;)
Hobbit
May 19th,2003, 06:45 PM
Legolas always seems to look neat: after the battle of Helmsdeep Aragorn, Gimli and the Rohirrim looked tired, dirty and destroyed and Legolas was as clean is always and full of energy.
I'm sure they have plenty wigs for Legolas.
Luvara
May 19th,2003, 07:42 PM
probably! lol just like Win said, one new for each scene!
Tirithel
May 19th,2003, 09:34 PM
Wasn't there a constant effort to make the elves look kinda cleaner and neater throughout the movies to set them further apart from men? I remember watching some of the special features and there was a joke between Legolas and Aragorn/Boromir about who was better and the clean thing was a part of it. ???
Hobbit
May 20th,2003, 12:11 AM
I didn't see that part, so maybe I should see the special features again.
And you're absolutly right: elves have to be an enlightened race, wiser and fairer then men or dwarves and the fact that they're always cleaner is kinda of a way to show they're fairer, wiser, nobeler and less touched by evil.

Anyway....yeah, I agree with Win. ;)

its a wierd comparison isnt it...
I mean on the one hand, how did the elves in Middle Earth maintain their hair styles ??? and on the other....well, we know how they did it in the movie, with multiple wigs, which simply dont really get untidy,.. since they can doctor and treat them so they dont come undone :-/
