Did you know that Lawrence Makoare had to spend about a good 9 hours in his make-up unit to have the 'Lurtz make-up' done up for the days when he had to do some filming, even when it simply means standing behind Saruman for a mere moment and grunting? lol

Well that should have helped him to look so berserk... imagine staying 9 hours and all this to look uglier than ever hehehe

Yeah, it was on the DVD, they said how they all felt sorry for the guy... but he took it all fine and he didn't complain a bit! Good for him! It takes a lot of patience to do that... lol

It also took a very long time to get ready for the scene where Lurtz is born; he had to be sealed into a sack and then taken out again!

That's interesting! I can't really remember what was said about the scene where Lurtz was being created. Mind enlightening me?

Found it! The information is in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Making of the Movie Trilogy' by Brian Sibley. Lawrence had to endure the 9 1/2 hours of make up and then a 14 hour shoot, followed by a 2 hour session in which the make up was removed. For this scene, he had to be covered in even more prosthetics, including a blind face piece with closed and swollen eyes, and some dentures which only allowed him to breathe through the back of his throat. He was entirely covered in the sac of liquid - simulating birthing matter. It mus have been a test of stamina and endurance above everything else.

That doesn't sound very enjoyable. But if it would allow me to play in a great project like LotR I would gladly except the job.
But the thing that I always wondered how do the manage to make the thing when Aragorn pierces him with his sword and then cut his head off, look good while the actor still plays Lurtz.
Can I ask here?

Ok you can, after all, it's sorta related, since it does involve 'behind the scenes' stuff to make it seem as realistic as possible. Unfortunately, I can't answer your question. lol Anyone wanna try answering it? :)
And my, Saruman, did you just say 'covered in the sack of liquid'? That's really horrendous! :o

Has anybody ever seen this guy WITHOUT his make-up? I'm surprised they haven't shown a step by step creation of the characters. Is there a psycho-movie reason for it or is the poor guy just better looking as Lurtz?

No I haven't seen him without his make-up. I'm sure I might be able to find a pic though. And I agree that they ought to show step-by-step creation of characters!

Well, I can answer SOME of it I think.
Somewhere in the extras on the EE DVD they said that Aragorn was just holding half a sword when he cut of fLurtz' head. He just took a swing with that, and the rest of the sword was added digitally afterwards.
As for cutting the arm off, well Im not sure, but I suppose he had a false arm there for Aragorn to slice in half? but thats just a guess!
 :p

I can imagine Lurtz saying things like 'Tis but a scratch!' and 'I'm invincible!'
