Today's news:
Pokemon announced for GameCube
Two Pokemon games have been announced for GameCube, and they are entitled Pokemon Channel: Together with Pikachu and Pokemon Colosseum. Colosseum is what we had previously thought it to be - an update of the Stadium series. However, it is unclear what Channel will be - probably a GC version of the N64 game Hey You, Pikachu! which was never released in the UK.

More news:

Sony unveil new PlayStation model
"Sony have unveiled the first details and images of a brand new PlayStation - although it's not PlayStation 3.

Instead, PSX will combine PS2 technology with a TV tuner, hard drive and DVD recorder in order to provide an integrated home entertainment unit that covers games, music and movies.

On top of that little lot, the device is designed to be linked up to multiple monitors, thus allowing you to pipe its output to different rooms around your home.

All of which sounds very snazzy although it's worth bearing in mind that, games-wise, PSX will just make use of PS2 technology.

Beyond that, Sony have given little away about the machine, saying only that PSX "will mark the beginning of a new series of products that will unite the most advanced electronics devices with the leading-edge semiconductor technology associated with the game sector."

Judging by the first images of PSX (see below), it looks to be roughly Xbox-sized although has far more aesthetic appeal than Microsoft's console. Oddly, the dummy machine doesn't appear to have any ports whatsoever, with just a CD/DVD-sized slot at the front. Look closely, and you'll also notice a PS2-esque PSX logo carved onto the top of the console. "

Games News 9/10

PlayStation 3 Launch Date

At a Japanese semiconductor trade event held in Yokohama city, Sony have today announced that the 'Cell' chip will go into mass production during the latter half of 2005. The relevance being, if you didn't know, that Cell is the newly designed microprocessor for PS3.

It had been previously reported that the new PS3 chip would go into production towards the end of 2004.

This latest news puts the PS3 back a year on that timetable, meaning the machine should be available to punters in 2006 - Sony's original forecast for their follow-up to PS2.

N-Gage Launches

Nokia N-Gage, the mobile phone/FM radio/MP3 player/handheld games machine hybrid, went on sale today - and it was one of the most low-key gaming hardware launches ever seen. Despite this, the Finnish company says, "We are targeting selling several million N-Gage units in 2004."

The device combines a Nokia phone with a large colour screen and digipad for playing games. Early software includes Tomb Raider, Red Faction, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Moto GP and Super Monkey Ball.

But early signs have not been good, due to the awkward controls and difficult design.
