Does anyone know why they used plate armour for Gondor and Rohan? Where did they get the idea for it? And especially the DESIGN of the Gondorian armour! Doesn't that armour look rather ridiculous?

I suppose they thought it would look a lot better. Maybe they needed a distinguishing feature between Rohan and Gondor.

Gondors armor looked out of place. All the other armor styles were cool, then along comes this clunky Gondor armor that looks like it was quickly pieced together.

I think the gondorian armour can symbolize the "superiority" of gondorian people. Gondor is a typical "medival kingdom", it has got a strong fortress and/or capital (Minas Tirith), the well-armoured knights are a very important part of its army.
After all, I like this armour-design maybe except the hemlet (especially the winged ones lol ), the ones from the second age are better.

But it didn't look well made like all the other armors did. It looked quickly pieced together. (Maybe thats what happens after being at war with Mordor for so long)

I' d be eager to know whether people of Dol Amroth has a different armour. Maybe they will be in ROTK...

Actually I think that a a full plate harness it is quite functional, and the helmet of the Gondorian infantry (not the Chiken Wings Royal Guards helmet) is quite effective too, I mean with a helmet like that you keep good care of your head, and still you can headbutt efficiently , and unlike the elven helmets, they are extremely useful and balanced.
