Certainly. It's nice to see someone interested in the epic tale of "Beowulf". It's certainly one of my favorites. :)
The book you refer to by Tolkien is based on a critique he wrote about the ancient story while still teaching at Oxford, I believe.
Anyway, the original manuscript of the poem "Beowulf" was written around the year 1000 A.D., yet it is said the story itself was composed several years earlier.
The story is based in Scandanavia, about Beowulf, son of Scyld, who vanquished an evil creature named Grendl.
Here are some websites I included to assist you further. Enjoy.

I would also recommend the book Grendl which is the epic tale retold from the perspective of the "motherly monster."

Ok, I checked Barnes and Noble today. Grendel is written by John Gardiner and there are three copies on the shelf so it is definitely still in print! I'm in the US, so I don't know the status in other parts of the world.

Give me your address and I'll mail you the blessed thing - it ain't that big or expensive - but I really liked the perspective it gave! Reminds me a little of Gollum and looking at him from the Smeagol side.
