View Full Version : Elvish underwear!

Elbereth
May 17th,2003, 03:49 PM
OK - this is an honest inquiry believe it or not though I must admit it does seem a little strange. Blame the fan fic I'm writing if you want!

My question is simple - what do Elves wear under those tunics and leggings and pretty gowns? And I mean this from the point of veiw of 'real' elves not what the actors wore.
Do Imladris elves like Arwen wear petticoats?
Do the Galadhrim wear pants?
Or nothing at all? :o

and please, minds out of the gutter!

that is quite a uniqe (sp? lol) question... never really though of that ... i would imagine somthing... maybe??

Elves look so clean and elegant,so they may wear some oldfashion underwear, but is nice thinking legolas doesn't!!!:naughty:

Hobbit
May 17th,2003, 11:44 PM
Altáriel! :nono: lol
I think it's kinda elf-dishonoring to try and answer this question.. but hey it's a practical one lol
I guess thay would have great and elegant and always clean underwear.

Catz
May 18th,2003, 05:43 AM
if youre talking seriously?
i doubt they would.....you couldnt get those long clean lines with the kinds of underwear that there was at the equivilent time period ie: the middle ages
then underwear consisted of a breechclout and an undershirt........a breechclout is essentially a strip of fabric that was tucked at both ends into a belt around the waist........women didnt wear underwear, other than an undershift and sometimes the female version of the breechclout
so no........i dont think they did ;)

Wow catz! I'm impressed! You're really knowledgeable about all these costume stuff! notworthy

Well, this is a very interesting question for discussion, as long as you treat it seriously ;)

Lasgalen
May 18th,2003, 10:09 AM
Since we are talking about Elves and not Humans, I think it is highly likely that they could come up with undergarments using their superior craftmanship.

Altáriel
May 18th,2003, 11:45 AM
i just can't imagine elves without underclothes it would be kind of dirty for such a supreme beings...but on the other hand they're supossed to have a close relationship with nature and using underwear is kinda an artificial thing.
I read an interview with liv tyler and she said she didn't wear anything under her dresses for LOTR movies, don't know what was her reason for that:too hot under those magnificent costumes or because elves aren't supossed to wear them...;)

Hobbit
May 18th,2003, 11:48 AM
I agree with Las here.
Catz: I'm impressed by your knowledge of the dark ages notworthy  I really am!
But I've got some book at home about the Roman sociaty and it says they already wore boxershorts (or at least something like a boxershort), a couple of hundred years before Christ, so maybe the elves also wore boxershorts... maybe....

Winyaél Greenleaf
May 18th,2003, 11:57 AM
Erm... are you sure? But LotR seems closer to the medieval age (or dark ages). At least, it has a medieval feel about it. Just look at the costumes that the LotR characters wear, especially the race of men.

Hobbit
May 18th,2003, 12:32 PM
Very True Win... LotR seems to be very close to the early medieval age, but the dark ages began after the fall of the west Roman empire at 498 after Christ (that wasn't the fall of the entire Roman empire for there was also an east Roman empire (Byzantine) that lasted till the 15th century)
so there were still lotsa influences from the Roman sociaty in the early medieval sociaty and although they were gone at the later medieval period, they only faded slowly. (especially the rich people kept lotsa Roman traditions... so maybe the boxershorts too)
And I always get the feeling that elves aren't based on any civalisation on earth for they're quite different from mortal men.
The only thing I tried to say was that they could wear boxershorts for they were "known" before the the time LotR resembles (I hope you get my point: I'm very bad at explaining things like this)

Winyaél Greenleaf
May 18th,2003, 01:30 PM
oh yeah Dark Ages was sort of between the Roman thing and Medieval Age right?
Well perhaps... afterall, Tolkien has never mentioned anything about elvish underwear! lol

Hobbit
May 19th,2003, 03:27 PM
The dark ages were kind of a mix between the roman and the medieval age, like you said: the roman ideas about justice and science etc. faded away, but most practical things like building techniques, ship building etc.... and maybe the boxershorts too.
And you're right: Tolkien never metnioned something about elvish underwear so we'll never be able to answer the question :(

I sure hope ALL of them, both in film and if it were reality, wear underwear. *shivers* no undies....*wince*

Winyaél Greenleaf
May 20th,2003, 03:10 PM
Wearing clean underwear= good personal hygiene. Surely the elves do practise erm... such stuff?

But I believe any undergarments they have will be of the Middle Ages style.

Bonos-Girl
May 20th,2003, 09:17 PM
i think that if they do wear underwear then it doesn't have to be of the human style, they're elves and if everything else they can create is more elegant and stuff than humans then why can't their underwear be as well?

Periantari Andruil

i know ..this IS an interesting question ...but look at the amount of discussion it generated! hahaha... i do not know whether elves wear underwear, but i sure hope so ;)

You're right. But usually, creations are being inspired by our surroundings and environments. For example, the weapons used in the middle ages were swords, bows, spears etc...
You don't see the elves using other more sophisticated stuff. I mean, some of their weapons may be more elegant in some ways, but its still the same kind of weapon anyway. We don't see elves wielding guns or any other stuff, do we? (though that would have been a most interesting sight lol)
Their clothes are more elegant and beautiful, definitely, but it's still more or less related to stuff that the humans wear.

I'd say that while their undergarments are of middle-age style, they'd be more elegant and um... durable? Yup, just my 2 cents worth.

Bonos-Girl
May 21st,2003, 08:23 AM
yep, i agree...i mean...theres only so many ways of making underwear....they'd all probably have the asme basis...but the elves would look nicer! lol

Elbereth
May 22nd,2003, 01:38 PM
Seems the general view is Middle Ages but elegant.
I was hoping most would agree they wore underwear because if you think of some Elf-maiden leaping up on a horse (think movie arwen!) without pants - it isn't a good thought!
I was thinking for female Elves it would be something along the lines of a shift/petticoat/underdress and then something like pants (I hope)
Male elves though. Under the robes it wouldn't be a problem but with those leggings?

I'd say that while their undergarments are of middle-age style, they'd be more elegant and um... durable?
I really hope so - after all Elves are immortal! lol

Hobbit
May 22nd,2003, 05:45 PM
Hehe that's true lol

And you're right Elbereth: it's good to think they wore underwear.

Winyaél Greenleaf
June 7th,2003, 06:03 AM
I thought elves didn't need saddles for their horses?

Luvara
June 12th,2003, 12:50 PM
but Legolas has a saddle on his horse, doesn't he?

Lasgalen
June 12th,2003, 08:55 PM
He only has a saddle in the movie (because Orlando needed one) but in the book he rode bare back.

Luvara
June 12th,2003, 09:05 PM
ok, that's what I thought!

Beleriel
June 12th,2003, 09:34 PM
Just to put my two pennorth in..... surely if they didnt wear socks.... then they wouldnt wear underwear.....lol dont the two things go hand in hand so to speak?

socks - underwear....... underwear - socks?? roflmao

Hobbit
June 12th,2003, 09:57 PM
I don't wear socks most of the time.... which immensly iritates my family lol (that's why they started calling me Hobbit :p lol)

But I have to agree with you that elves probably don't wear socks: I mean, they're a true nature folk so they would probably walk with boots or bare-footed... but I think they do wear underwear: underwear is a sign of personal hygine and elves seem to be quite clean and all....
So I guess they did wore underwear of some sort..

Beleriel
June 12th,2003, 10:00 PM
well, I would have thought it is more hygenic to not wear underwear.

and in the books the elves were always barefooted werent they? At least in LOTR Legolas was described as bare footed.

Hobbit
June 12th,2003, 10:07 PM
Yeah that's right: I was confused with the movies. Thanks Bel

I actually think it's a bit more hygenic to wear underwear... I don't know how to explain it, I just think so.

Winyaél Greenleaf
June 13th,2003, 07:52 AM
Actually, I don't think they have things like socks in the ancient times. Leggings, yes, but not socks.

Lasgalen
June 13th,2003, 08:10 AM
I think it is more hygenic to wear underpants because they can be changed and washed dailey. The outer garments were not washed very often (in middle ages at any rate-don't know about ME)

I can just imagine Haldir or Legolas with an olive branch or an olive branch patterned -something-. I could say something else.... but I would sound a little ummm... wierd.

But I too would hope they wore underwear and socks. Long Johns possibly? Aren't those underwear and socks? I wouldn't know.

Well, didn't elves wear many layered clothing? Well, that's at least what New Line's interpretation was... when i was looking for ideas for my elf dress costume, i noticed that on many of Arwen's outfits, she practically wore two dresses. A light, probably silky underdress and then the actual dress over it, the slits in the arms and the skirt revealing the dress underneath. So... i would think that either A) the underdress served as their "underwear" or B) they had yet a third outfit underneath it all... What i'm thinking of is something like this (http://www.simplicity.com/designFrame.cfm?designId=6958&design=5905) or this (http://www.simplicity.com/designFrame.cfm?designId=6384&design=7157) I don't know what the male elves might wear as underwear though... maybe elven men didn't wear any  But i think that Elven women would.

Lasgalen
July 6th,2003, 11:34 AM
Elf men probably wore something, too. It just doesn't show through their outter garments like it does for the Elf women.

Hobbit
July 9th,2003, 02:13 AM
I like your ideas about an underdress HF. They look quite elagant and gracious and those two words also discribe elven women.
I think elf men wore underwear too. Maybe something like a boxershort...

HobbitFriend
July 9th,2003, 08:40 PM
thanks Hobbit lol :smooch:
like i said before, i don't think that the elves would wear nothing underneath... and like Hobbit was suggesting, the elf men probably wore something similar to shorts or pants underneath their clothes.

Elbereth
July 16th,2003, 10:12 PM
one can only hope!

but I like the layered idea - that fits quite well with my image of elven women

Ludibunda
July 19th,2003, 04:45 AM
Verrrrrry Interesting - what you think is dirty (NO underwear) I think is natural and freeing. Graceful, flowing elves should never be bound by restrictive undergarments. At least we are all consistent in thinking that whatever is considered most clean and comfortable is what would suit this beloved race.

Lasgalen
July 19th,2003, 12:17 PM
Elvish underwear doesn't have to be restricting. They probably make it in such a way that it is very comfortable.

Beleriel
July 19th,2003, 02:41 PM
lol I like the idea of those elegant undergarments on elvish ladies...... but they would really have affected the cut of the gowns to accomodate all that lace dont you think? ;)

Certainly those sleek looking ones that Arwen wears! lol

Im sorry ...... but I still cant see elven men bothering with such things...... perhaps they sported a loincloth type arrangement! roflmao

Hobbit

I agree. it did brought up some nice discussions though.

I don't think underwear is restricting. And gracefull and elegant beings like elves would probably have underwear that isn't resticting at all.

Ludibunda
July 21st,2003, 02:51 AM
Well, that puts me in the minority view, and I can live with that, ha! ha!

Elbereth
July 21st,2003, 02:20 PM
I'm afraid I can't get my head around the idea of the council of Elrond and all those elven Lords sitting around with no pants!

I don't think underwear is restricting either, to me long flowing gowns with miles of floaty fabric would be far more restricting than a pair of pants or a petticoat. but perhaps under leggings underwear may have to be forsaken!

(i was thinking Lollipop - i should have capitalized the "L" so the "lol" smilie didn't show up like it did :p so it's not "lipop" lol ) and then it says "The world may never know..." :p

*shakes head* maybe i'll just shut up now hearnoevil :p :p :p

But still - it does sound a bit odd I must say
forgive me :p

You can find it in the fanfic section entitled 'Legolas Greenleaf and the Underpants of Doom'

Friends, strangers from distant lands, you are here to answer the threat of Marks and Spencer. Many centuries ago elven craftsmen were betrayed by the chain store deceiver and unwittingly created an underwear so uncomfortable yet reputedly so elegantly designed that all those who bought them were ensnared by the evil powers. The Underpants of Doom must be taken to the fiery factoy from whence they came and destroyed. One of you must do this...

For all those stricken with horror at the awfulness I have unleashed - this is a joke. You are safe, for the moment...

I remember this thread we used to have... it was like the "pants game" where you replace words with "pants" and one time (i forget who said it, but it was so funny that i still remember it! lol ) was: "Gondor has no pants! Gondor needs to pants!" roflmao

(and with the whole Lollipop thing... guess what: i found a t-shirt the other day that said "How many licks does it take" with a tootsie pop underneath the lettering... i think they were implying something else though :o :o :o )
