Which version of the Eye do you prefer: the abstract, totally dominating eye of FOTR, or TTT's more shaped, yet still quite abstract eye?
I myself didn't like the eye that much. I like the idea of a cat's eye, but I thought that both versions were too abstract.

I wasnt keen on either to be honest.

I didnt like the stoopid noise it made in FOTR and it was just TOO MUCH like the Bakshi one for my liking! Cheezy...

The second one... well Its OK I suppose... but they are BOTH a bit to abstract for me! A real eye would have been far more convincing I think.

I can't remember what the Bakshi one was like... do you mind refreshing my memory?

I preffered the eye in TTT i guess :)

Well the way it was described:
Lord of the Rings, The Mirror of Galadriel
The Eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing.
It's quite a task... but I don't think PJ's pupil made it even close... actually the FotR ones we're closer to the 'real' thing... TTT one wasn't deep enough for me...

I remember that when I first read LOTR, when I was very young, I thought that Barad Dur was a giant lighthouse! Did Tolkein intend this metaphor?

hmmm that's interesting... never thought of it actually... the association that I get now is how the fire of the candles which attracts the butterflies.. and burns their wings before they understand that the beautiful light was death.... the ringwraiths... but back to lighthouse... lighthouses are built to help the sailors... Sauron destroyed Numenor with his ill advices... false lighthouse like the candle which attracts the butterflies till it's too late indeed...

thats the trouble with movies over books isnt it!

they cant leave much to the imagination..... got to create the vision for you!!

It is kinda wierd tho... this giant eye hangin around.....

I reckon your Lighthouse idea is MUCH better!

WARNING all flying Ringwraiths! WATCH OUT BIG TOWER BELOW

Well... there are already people who are asying that in RotK we're going to see a human eye and then we will see Sauron return (Remeber Saruman said: he can't yet take fisical form. he doesn't sais that in the book right  )
Personally I didn't really notice the difference, but if I had to choose I would go for the TTT eye.

I can't really remember either just that the one in TTT annoyed me a little, too big and noisy though the effects were good, didn't like it that much. ;)

I prefered the FOTR Eye of Sauron over TTT's Eye.

The Eye from FOTR appeared far more evil and disheartening.

I agree with you on that. FOTR's eye looked a lot more imposing, and fiery. TTT's almost looked electric (had it not been red)

yep....i agree...FOTR eye was more threatening somehow than the TTT one.

I don't like either of them... At first I didn't know it was an eye! I couldn't see the edges, only a black vertical slit. Didn't look too much like an eye, if I may say so.

But if I just have to choose between FotR and TTT, I'd choose FotR. It was larger, scarier, and more piercing than TTT. That eye on top of Barad-dur was weird. I almost said "Why are those orcs and trolls scared of a projection of an eye in flames and electricity?"

Hobbit
May 23rd,2003, 04:26 PM
Hehe maybe he can fire down some of the electricity and fire from his eye lol

I don't think it was a bad idea to create an eye like they did: no-one knows what he was supposed to look like for it was never confirmed if he had a fisical form at time of LotR.
But in the past he was able to take different shape so I wonder if he could still do that by the time of LotR...

I think the TTT eye was better for it reminds me more of the red eye that at the front of my LotR books at home lol

I really destest that eye - which is less "lack of appreciation of the film" and more admission that they did a fabulous job to make me detest that which we are supposed to loathe!

Hobbit
May 24th,2003, 07:43 PM
That's true: they want you to deteste the eye becouse it's evil and bad...... man, PJ and his crew are geniouses lol

But I always thought that Sauron did have a kind of fisical form (otherwise he wouldn't be able to use the ring, wouldn't he  ) and that he just used the eye to appear at the palantirs or Galadriel's mirror, to scare off all the people who are trying to unfold his plans....
(still like eye two the best)

I like eye 2 the best too. I couldn't say why tho.

Now you see for me..... this is much more like it!

Something evil and scary and REAL!

EYE (http://www.stomptokyo.com/scott/darthmaul/dmphoto1/insider-eye.jpg)
Maybe with some flames added around it...

Oh well..... I DO appreciate that it must have been a difficult thing to tackle though.

Ewww!!! That's gonna give me nightmares lol Would work very well for horror movies lol Not sure if it'll have a good effect for Sauron though lol

May 28th,2003, 01:08 AM
Just imagine it Win.... with some flames around the edge of the eye!

Oh..... I think it would have been eye-deal! roflmao

and isnt that the point? Isnt it supposed to give you nightmares?? ;)

Ok, here are pics of the FotR and TTT eye, which Alatar has kindly sent to me.

FotR eye: http://www.warofthering.net/photos/fotrsauron/images/PDVD_1350.jpg

TTT eye: http://www.warofthering.net/photos/tttsauron/images/twotowers33.jpg

Just for your reference, in case you're just like me... very inobservant and couldn't remember what the heck's so different about the two eyes lol I love the fiery effect of the TTT eye. It's so cool!

oh you did me a great favour all right! Without your pics, I might never make my vote regarding which eye is better cuz I'm too lazy to check up pics on Sauron's eye anyway lol

Great work Win and Alatar... my memory of both eyes was kinda vague but now I can clearly see the difference

I like the TTT eye better: it somehow looks even more dangerous and threathening to me... probably becouse it's closer to a normal eye ;)

Winyaél Greenleaf
May 28th,2003, 03:04 PM
yup, when I opened the files that Alatar sent me, I was like 'OMG! Such a great difference!' lol

Hmm... the FotR eye is a tad too narrow, that's why it didn't really seem quite like a normal eye.

Alatar
May 29th,2003, 10:55 AM
ya it is a bit to narrow, i personaly never noticed the differance when watching the movie, then i looked at my pics and i was HOLY ****, THAT EYE LOOKS COOL!!!

Winyaél Greenleaf
May 29th,2003, 03:43 PM
lol I didn't notice the difference when watching the movie either lol And there I was thinking 'What's with the fuss about an eye.' lol

Looking at those two, the TT eye is far superior to the FOTR one isnt it?

I mean (and please dont be offended, but this is what I see every time I look at the FOTR eye) that first eye, it looks very much like a sphincter muscle doesnt it? (THATs the polite version! ;) ) I hope I havent offended everyone!

But its what I see! :o lol

Do I need medication? *worried*

I liked the one in FotR... the first time I saw the one in TTT I was rather alarmed and shocked and thought it was fake... I've never gotten over that feeling lol

Hobbit
June 5th,2003, 04:16 PM
I didn't really noticed the difference between them before Win and Alatar got us these pics.... I like the TTT's one better for some reason...
It looks more human while the FotR one looks like that of an animal.... the TTT's eye shows Sauron might be evil, but he's no animal.

June 13th,2003, 08:20 AM
Well, I can't decide... I didn't like the eye on top of Baradur in TTT... it looked too 3D for me... otherwise the eye in TTT was superior to FOTR, though I am quite fond of the FOTR one as well, so I voted FOTR.

Frodo's Love

Well, I voted for TTT's eye. :) On the pics posted in here it looks more real. Hobbit already mentioned that the FOTR one gives the impression of an animal's eye, and indeed it reminds me a bit of a cat's eye. ( I even agree with Bel, btw. ;) ).lol
But nevertheless- both eyes look impressive in their own ways. TTT's eye just freaks me out a little bit more...but Sauron is also getting more dangerous.
