This is the place to share your knowledge of JRR Tolkien, to share your opinions on what you think he meant for his classics to mean, and how his life influences the way he conveys his themes in his books.
One of the purposes of this forum is to inform and educate our community about the Professor... If anyone has any news to share or any knowledge or opinions please do not hesitate to post...
Any comments or suggestions on what you would like to see is welcome too. =)

Another note (out of the blue...:p ):
Everyone feel free to ask questions and use this forum as a means for reference. For example, if you're writing a paper about Tolkien (as I am doing now ;) ) ask for suggestions about it or ask where you can find information. =)
I know that i would like this thread to not only be discussion but used as a means to find information too. =)
so yeah... ask/post away

Hi folks!
I´m writing a paper for a literature course at my university. I haven´t formulated the topic so far but it will be about The Lord of the Rings and the question in how far the things, Tolkien experienced in his life, are reflected in his writing style. Just an example: Tolkien was a soldier in World War I and one can clearly see that he is against war. He shows that in his works. Well, I´d just like to know if anyone of you guys could tell me where to get good and reliable material on that.
Thanks.
Nili

In addition to recommending Tolkien's Biography which is written by Humphrey Carpenter, I would recommend "The Letters of JRR Tolkien" ... I haven't read it yet but i know you can find good detailed first-person narrated letters by him which would be useful.
There's also a recently published book called, "Tolkien and the Great War" by John Garth which is specifically about "how J.R.R. Tolkien's WWI experience influenced his literary creations". You can find it at barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com probably. It's just been published in Nov. 2003... so very new book. =)
 Good luck!

Since there are a lot of good threads that have been "outdated" I think it'll be useful to put up a sticky thread on a directory of links to past subjects...
i'll do this in the next several days or so in order for people know that there were topics like "Tolkien and Allegory" and "Tolkien and his influences from Beowulf to LotR" and such...
so keep your eyes open... there are NOT only three threads in here ;) =)

I wonder if I can post this question here - but I've always wondered: What order should I be reading Tolkien literature? I mean - I've read LotR, Hobbit and a chunk of the histories of ME - but what is a must read and what should the progression be? I hope this is the right place to ask this question :)

Well, I think I can answer that for you, Charmander!:smooch: I read everything in...an upside-down way, as well, you see!lol I read LotR, then THe Hobbit and then The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales...now I'm trying to read HoME!!
I don't think there is a special order, though...most people, I think ,started with LotR...then, intrigued, went on to the Hobbit or Silmarillion! After that...I think it's just a matter of discovering Tolkien's other works and HoME... ;) I love this journey of discovery, btw! :)
Hope I am some help!:smooch:Just guessing, though!

Sort of lol! Thanks for the advice! I think I will move over to the Sil after I finish book five and then get the rest of HoME - but I wonder, should I be reading biography stuff now, or after reading all his literature? Or does it not matter - I want things to make more sense - I've been reading HoME wishing I had read the Sil first! I guess it doesn't matter as long as I read as much as I can!

lol Exactly! You simply read as much as you want! I still haven't read biographies yet...I think I'll do that after I've read most of the Professor's work! I find that, through his books, I can find out so much more about the dreamer Tolkien was, than by reading a biography... :)

I am wondering how important it is to read the letters - people keep referencing them as having tid bits of important information :)

Great discussion..but not in here..;)
This thread is mainly for suggestions or comments about the Professor forum.. perhaps you can chat about the order of which to read the books in the Lord of the Rings LIbrary forum ;) Thanks~ =)
it's ok though ... but in the future..... :P
