Do you have links to good sites for getting LotR-stuff or related...be it costumes, jewellery, weapons...please post them here!

This is the thread where folks can post up links of websites or provide addresses and contacts of places you know of that sell great LotR merchandise, (jewellery, costumes, equipment for costume making, make-up materials etc).
You may even advertise your own website/store which consists of LotR 'Behind the Scenes' stuff.

In addition, if you wish to have your website formally listed in the directory of links in WotR and obtain reviews, banners etc for it, you can simply register yourself here and upload the link to your website!

I´m sure most of you have been at the noble collection before, but you should really take another look!

They have now got several new things in stock witch is all fantastic! Some ex are: Arwens Farewell "crown," Théodens brooch, Éowyns necklace, Galadriels brooch....

It´s amazing :) take a look

I bought a dress and accessories at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair. It's a Medieval jousting tournament and reenactment of those times. I'm sure they have a website and many other states probably have a similar drama group/event.

The following is a good reference site for those making their costumes. It has sections on patterns, discussions on clothing design, suggestions for sourcing fabrics and even links to retailers who supply the additional accoutrements of hair, contacts, ears and feet (for the PJ Elves amongst us and the hobbits).

Granted that it is a little dated and is in need of updating. Nonetheless, I have been able to use this as a reference site for putting together my Eowyn costume (which I am making with my mother). For those of us who are not based in the US, many of the links to retailers on this site will ship to international addresses.

Hopefully, my grasp of html at this site is up to the task

Can anyone tell me where I can get the cloth needed for a Legolas costume? The one seen on him through most of the movie... Cheapish..... if possible

Nimloth
October 7th,2003, 05:31 AM
I've found the following to be handy when sourcing silks and linens:

Fabrics (General) (http://www.fabrics.com)

Thai Silks (http://www.thaisilks.com)

Both have a wide range to choose from, and ship internationally at reasonable prices. I found a linen at Fabrics.com that was cheaper than any available locally with P & H as well as currency conversion included. As the Australian Dollar is roughly half an American one, that makes one heck of a bargain!

Regarding silks, I had to dye my silk fabric as I couldn't get a texture and colour match. In the end, it was easier to match texture and finish and fix the colour through a silk dyer. If dyeing silk, I'd recommend finding someone who knows what they're doing and getting them to do it.

That way, you don't have to locate a very large vat/cauldron that you can never use for anything else again once you dye, experiment with the dye and hope for the best.

Hope that helps

Heh, I was looking over the MRL site (museumreplicas.com) and they've got costume repro's, first series has Gandalf the Gray (looks bad though it looks like purple or something, except the hat) Frodo (not bad) Legolas (LOL) and Arwen (not yet tho) go http://store.museumreplicas.com and there's a link if you wanna check em out.

Nice link Aerandir.
I think the replicas from Gandalf's clothes and hat are quite good except for the brownish color of his robes. (I think it's becouse of the shadow and light effects that some parts of Gandalf's robes seem a bit purple)
The replicas of Frodo's clothes are fantastic, eventhough the pants and vest are a bit too long. But it still looks very much like the clothes used in the movies.
I think the replicas from Legolas costume is also great with lots of details (I'd really like to see the details on the archers armbands. They look really good) Only the color of the clothes (especially the pants and cape) seem a too brownish. The movie costume from Legolas had more of a bright green color.

I'm really wanting one, but I was concerned about the quality/durability...I'd kind of llike to wear it all the time, but I wonder if it can withstand daily wear, like will the little stone pop out, etc...one would assume, given the price, that it would be pretty sturdy, but I'd hate to find out the hard way...anyone?

i'll make my little ebay testimonial: i'm on there now and have bought stuff on ebay. it is always buyer beware but they seriously have everything. i'm looking at green velvet and green trim for an elvish-type costume, and they have it, at discount prices. i have found in the past that it is a lot of fabric stores that sell their overstock, and they want to just get rid of it, so it's cheap, but it's good stuff. be careful but look around, you will probably find something unexpected and exciting. lol i just did...hah hah

i would suggest that if you want decent gear for the plus sizes, especially costumes, youre better to make your own............stores really dont have much......you CAN get them, but you have to look hard
sides then you can choose your favourite colours and fabrics and come up with designs that suit your figure instead of having to put up with what some skinny person thinks would look good on your figure ;) lol
sewing really isnt too hard, tho its a prob if you dont have a machine, but there are sewing classes around and schools that have machines you can use

Talking about making your own Garb, Cuiel asked me to post some links up here for useful medieval-style garb sites. Here are a few of the ones I've found to be most useful when researching ideas for SCA garb:

http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/mensgarb.html - a good pamphlet detailing Viking Men's clothing.

http://www.learner.org/exhibits/middleages/clothing.html - a user friendly basic history of clothing in medieval times.

http://www.lothene.demon.co.uk/crafts6.html - early Medieval clothes patterns

http://www.celticgarb.org/clothing/main.html - Celtic clothing.

But I would really recommend getting hold of the Medieval Tailor's Assistant by Sarah Thursfield.

Elfdaughter
May 26th,2004, 01:22 PM
Yes it is, and I wouldn't be without it. It's expensive, but if you're doing this as a serious hobby, then it is REALLY worth getting. It tells how to make tons of diffferent styles:

(From the blurb on the back):
From establishing the date for your outfit, defining the wearer, and selecting garments, to measurements, patterns, materials, methods of construction, braies, shirts and smocks, cotes, doublets, kirtles, hose, surcotes, cotehardies, gowns, overkirtles, cloaks, children's clothing, headwear, and on to accessories, this is the perfect resource all in one volume. There are more than 400 line drawings and 121 patterns.

It is expensive - my copy as £28 from Blackwell's internet site - and that's cheap. (it's a paperback version.)

Cuiel Rilwen
May 26th,2004, 01:35 PM
And ofcourse you have the link to Blackwell too?;) Sounds real interesting, even for someone who doesn't want to sew, just to learn about how people dressed in those days! :) (That would be me lol!)

I hate to have to say this but I felt the same way and I had to give in and get Visa. Noone seems to want the hazzle of handling postal payments, I guess that's because the creditcard-companies have everything so neatly worked out. I haven't had any mishaps with it tho, and have been shopping some around. I do have a PayPal-account and I use it whereever they accept it, it costs nothing. So if you wanna shop on the net better start checking prices for creditcard options with different firms and go get one.

Good luck! :)

So if you wanna shop on the net better start checking prices for creditcard options with different firms and go get one.

Good luck! :)

Well, I was able to find a Tolkien catalogue in Europe that accepts postal payment, after all, and I just made my very first order through the net...I hope all goes well, I want to order Nenya next!

I really dislike credit cards, though, I'm not exaggerating! I don't know, I find postal payment much more...well, neat and tidy! You order something, it comes to your house and you pay to get it upon delivery! What's neater than that? ;) I have thought about getting a pre-paid credit card, though! you know, you put some money on it and when it's spent...the card becomes invalid and that's the end of it!!I don't want to get involved with banks and loans and stuff like that!! I really AM a...cash and carry person, you know? lol

Could you perhaps provide a link to this catalogue? I'm sure there are others who dislike creditcards who would be happy to have it!

Oh yes I agree...very neat for us customers indeed! But from another point of view...and this comes from a woman who earns her living selling stuff to others...not so neat for the manufactorers and retailers. If you knew how many people order something that they either don't pick up or refuse to receive you'd be amazed...and that means an extra cost in postage that leads to no gain for the shops! Both to the customer and back again! So I can understand why most retailers won't accept that form of payment anymore. Sad but nonetheless a fact of life.

Sorry, just saw the post where you were asking me to post a link to the catalogue I was talking about!!

Well, here it is

http://www.xs4all.nl/~rossnbrg/movies.htm

It has a lot more in the way of LotR stuff than the first catalogue you see, so check out the other catalogues, as well.

With regard to what you were saying about payment methods, Cuiel...I understand what you're talking about...I never do this myself-if I order something, I WILL go to pick it up, even if I decide I don't want it in the meantime...it's a bit of a matter of honour for me, lol -but I know a lot of people do this, order stuff via the net or even by phone and not bother to either cancel their order or even refuse to receive their orders! I find that evil and inconsiderate, btw! But I still prefer cash on delivery as a payment method...you know, hand-to hand exchange... ;)Yes, I'm a cash person, there's no helping it!! lol lol

I absolutely see your point...and ofcourse there are dishonest companies out there too who will fail to deliver after you've payd your goods, so there are two sides or more to that matter!

Thanks for the links, I'm sure a lot of people in here will appreciate it! I'll be checking it out when I get off work! :)

I found Moresca (http://www.moresca.com/) by following a link from within our Art forum! You just HAVE to look at it, it's by far the most professional costumesite I've seen, at least for buying costumes! Prices aren't horrible either...not by judging from the look of the outfits!

I've only used three sites and they are *unbelievable*

1. Non-leather items: TwinRosesDesigns at www.twinrosesdesigns.com.

Andrea has made the two "Aragorn" shirts for me, as well as the Bo tunic and undertunic with maille half-sleeves.

2. Leather items (excluding footwear): Ravenswood Leather at www.ravenswoodleather.com

Call up and ask!

3. Footwear: Champion Attitude Boots at www.caboots.com

Joey Sanchez is a master! I got the Aragorn boots listed on the site from him.

That is a fab dolls-site! I like the retro Barbies...allthough they look a bit stuck up with their little noses poining upwards and lowered eyelids! Also the Versace-dolls look great.

Did you pay via paypal or credit card? Was the charge processed? If it was processed, contact your CC provider and dispute the charge - indicate that you never received the items and the phone has been disconnected.

:-/ I wish I had paid with CC... I sent checks, it was a layaway item... and I have the canceled checks.... sigh... i may just be screwed up anyway.....

sorry everybody if this is OT... and thanks again for the help!

I haven't had a chance to check out all these links yet... but was wondering, I used to have a link to a lady that made elven costume jewelry. she was selling it on ebay for a while... unfortunately I can't remember her name :( but it was very nice stuff at very nice prices! (those kind always go missing don't they?!)

thanks!

I'm sorry, :( I haven't got the faintest idea about what happened to Mithril Armoury...the home page says it will open again sometime...during august I think it was. However...and this might not be so in other countries but it is in mine but anyways...:) if you have a claim over a company that goes bankrupt then it might be possible to find out who deals with the estate money affairs and state your claim with them..that way you'll at least have some way of getting your money back.

anyone know any other fan forums?

This particular part of WotR deals with behind the scenes stuff, f.ex arts and crafts...or special effects such as make up or stage designs...not actually fan forums.

If you want to explore new forums you could drop in here (http://www.warofthering.net/index/) and check out our links...and if you have some new ones you think we should add to the list then please send me a PM and I'll check it out! :)
