View Full Version : End of ROTK -very heavy spoilers

A! Elbereth

DO NOT KEEP READING IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE ENDING SPOILED. But just to say for the record, this could be rumor, and could not:

Heavy spoilers.

"Rings Redux

We bring you news all the way from Middle-earth. Sir Ian Holm, who plays hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring, may not appear in the sequel, but don't count him out of the trilogy totally. 'I probably shouldn't say this, but I'm back in three... as a very old man.' Says Holm.

'Bilbo just suddenly appears at the end of the movie and says 'I'm ready for another adventure.' He goes off with Frodo into the sunset.'

This upsets me a great deal. I greatly hope this isnt true!

Aragorn Isildur
July 27th,2002, 10:30 AM
Well thats correct isnt it? Grey Havens and all that...

Aragorn:king:

Catz
July 27th,2002, 10:39 AM
well...yeah....pretty baldly, but that is, in essence what happens, aint it?...actually i find that rather reassuring, cos if Bilbos there, theres a good chance that the Grey Havens will be fairly intact:cool:
:catz:

A! Elbereth
July 27th,2002, 05:50 PM
Its says he suddenly appears and they walk of into the sunset - then end of story - no boat - no Aman- No grey havens???

Pil
July 27th,2002, 05:52 PM
Why so upset A! Elbereth? :( :cuddles:

I agree :catz:...sounds like the grey havens are in!

Nice finishing line...anyone else agree? Though it does sound like they're going off the die...like right then... ;)

Catz
July 28th,2002, 12:35 AM
thats just a quote tho....you cant take what Holm said literally...for one thing he'd not be allowed to give away plot details other than in the most sketchy way....sounds fine to me....

ok maybe I'm gettin a little too obsessed and its making me worried? ....Or I'm just stupid... we'll go with that lol ;)

Black Rider

that ending does sound a little umm, corny. but hopefully it'll be better sounding in the movie.

A! Elbereth
July 28th,2002, 02:05 AM
I want it to end like the book - Sam staring into the grey fog over the sea, tears in his eyes, and maybe a few flashbacks with an encouraging word or two so that the audience doesnt flood the theartre with tears. Then after the words are spoken Merry Sam, and pippin walk off into the sunset instead as one of them says something.... awwwww It would be the most perfect ending for me! I can actually watch it in my head. I'm gettin teary! mecry :loveyou: mecry :loveyou:

Fatty
July 28th,2002, 03:13 AM
Hmmm yes I think they will indeed sail over the sea.....why would any movie director miss the opportunity to bring the film to a tearful and emotional ending. THough I am betting on a bit at end too............we must consult our Palantir!

Pil
July 28th,2002, 06:40 PM
Yeeeees.... :(

CORNY IS RIGHT!!! (luv bonos-girl) Pil agrees... walking off into the sunset is THE worst ending ever! I mean...it was used in only fools and horses for crying out loud!

(bonos-girl thinks i'm being mean to only fools and horses mecry)

I know it is a quote...but in the book its when they meet frodo and sam in the woods (?) not at the end...the VERY end anyway...ok i'm confooosing everyone! :duh:

A! Elbereth

i think it was just a throw away line that everyones getting way too het up about....to say that someone rides off into the sunset. to me just denotes that they live and go off somewhere...i very much doubt that he meant it literally:cool:
:catz:

A! Elbereth
August 3rd,2002, 07:51 AM
yeah, i do take things literally most of the time. Thanks for clearing that up, because throughout the rest of the article, he seemed serious about it

well thats what happens when they leave, in a sense.....its just a metaphoric way of putting it.....

Yeah I want it to end like the book too, with the last line being Sam's when he returns home to his wife.
Then fade to black...

Above all else, for the moment anyway, I want to see ROTK's ending be true to the book!

A! Elbereth
August 8th,2002, 06:17 AM
Now that i think bout it.... once I own ROTK.... it will be over. there will be no more excitment. No more anticipation. I almost want it to last forever, yet I want to see them all at once tonight! I just want this outrageous Lord of the Rings frenzy to never end. After a while people will stop loving it. This frightens me, yesssss it doessss.

TheRingBearer
August 9th,2002, 05:44 PM
Yeah it's so annoying. You'd do anything to see the films now but you know that when you do it will be over... Kinda depressing.

August 9th,2002, 06:43 PM
:( i don't want it all to end! i'm almost glad that they spaced it out for 3 years and that they're not all back to back... gives us something to look forward to and everyone to talk about. i love finding little articles and previews about LotR... it makes me happpy! :) i love the anticiapation...

I was thinking that too...what will happen? Will the hype fade away? mecry

A! Elbereth
August 9th,2002, 09:11 PM
The desire and pleasure in my heart for Lord of the Rings will NEVER fade away! I hope the same goes for you! We will keep it going! But I'm still not sure either mecry

TheRingBearer
August 9th,2002, 09:30 PM
I doubt the hype will fade away especially when people who have not read the books finish watching the two towers. They will be DYING to know what happens in the end!! :)

A! Elbereth
August 9th,2002, 09:31 PM
Well, we are talking about what will happen after ROTK, and teh dvd has come out, then everyone will have the LOTR trilogy in book and movie... then some stupid movie will take over afterward, distracting the world from LOTR. grrrrrrrr

Nessa
August 9th,2002, 09:33 PM
I think they're talking about the end of Rotk and not TT, RingBearer. :)

I often wonder the same thing.... but I'll just enjoy it while its going on... and hope discussion in boards like these don't die down.

yeah, I want them to do the hobbit, too. Just cus the prequel to the original star wars didn't turn out so great doesn't mean that the hobbit wouldn't turn out great.

I think it would turn out better than that happened with star wars because they might actually be able to find actors that know how to act.

Elijah and Ian have actually made refference to filming the grey havens and it being the most emotional scene they've ever filmed ever.
given that corny ending, I doubt that is what they meant.

Lady Ashley

Personally, I don't wanna see The Hobbit the Movie...just 'cause PJ should leave a little bit of Tolkien's world un-movied and give people a chance to imagine it as they will.

The Hobbit was my first intro to Middle-Earth! That's where I first imagined Hobbits and Rivendell and the Elves and everything. I'd like others to do that to, see what they can come up with on their own, without seeing it Master PJ's way.

Besides, I don't want PJ to edit out anything. Goodness, who knows what he would do to it!

I think The Hobbit idea is a good one, after all there is the Silmarillion to imagine for ourselves still. Also, I've read that PJ has the rights to it and may do somthing http://www.mckellen.com/epost/lotr/l021029.htm (second post down)

I've seen the phrase 'marathon viewing' twice and it struck me that maybe we would eventually get it down to the point that, we start somtime new years eve, and as the clock strikes twelve sam says to rosie "Well, I'm back!":). Just an Idea.

Lintefaniel

Ok another question. I've seen many suggestions for an ending, but we know that the climax is gollums death, how do you suggest that PJ cary it on so the audiance dosn't feel that the movie is over, or will he need to.

I really hope there is something (narration maybe, or even text) that tells of Sam going to the Havens, and Merry and Pippin being burried in Gondor next to King Elessar (Aragorn) when he dies. Also, Legolas and Gimli sailing to the Havens, bringing an end to Middle Earth of the Fellowship of the Ring.

I just read in an interview with PJ that he says the final scene in the ROTK is his favourite and its the Grey Havens.

"{Jackson has already earmarked the film's final scene, which takes place amid the sweeping landscape of the Grey Havens, as his favourite.

"To me, it's a culmination of the entire story; it represents what it is to give and what it is to lose," he says. "That scene is probably the most powerful part of the entire film." }"

But close enough that I can still call it true to the spirit. :)

It says in one of the commentaries that Galadriel does an ending naration. It might show Frodo going off to the Havens, then it shows quick shots of all the other members of the fellowship while Galadrial says what happens...

Though now that I really think about it, that has the potential to be really cheesy if it's not done well!

Just a quick note to all those who are worried about the enthusiasm dying down after ROTK- Of course, life will go on, albeit empty without Aragorn, Frodo, Legolas et al. Well, putting the scouring aside... (since Galadriel didn't show the troubles of the Shire to Sam in FOTR, obviously no scouring)... I guess my hopes for the ending would be that there is the wedding, the hobbits in their armour, Legolas and Gimli going off to grey havens... etc...

I'd just love if they could put the Paths Of The Dead (And PJ you better!).... I wanna know how'd it look like!!

The narrator is Arwen. The elvish in the background at the beginning sounded more like her. Sure the voice in FOTR sounded like Galadriel but if Arwen is older then she could easily start sounding more like her mother. Arwen lives past the death of Aragorn and the leaving of the rest of the fellowship. So it would make sense for her to be the one to do the finishing narration since she is the only one left who "remembers."
In Appendix A, at the end of the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen:
"...(Arwen) she laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth; and there is her green grave until the world is changed, and all the days of her life are uttlerly forgotten by men that come after..."
This supports that she was the one narrating FOTR, especially that "the world is changed."
So most likely we will hear about, or see to some degree, the fate of the rest of the fellowship and see the vision of Elrond in the Two Towers movie come to pass for Arwen.
Sorry for the length, just trying to get all my points in one hit.

Very good point Lorlas, however i think many have aknowledged Galadriel as the true speaker of the narration. But we could be wrong.

@Iorlas: The one who does the narration in the beginning is Cate Blanchett. You can hear Liv Tyler mumbling something in elvish for a few seconds in the beginning of the introduction, but the rest is spoken by Cate.

I understand that Cate did the speaking, but my point is that it isn't necessarily her character Galadriel that is the one speaking it as I stated in my post that her daughter may acquire more of her mother's vocal tone as she ages.
So yes I agree that Cate who does play Galadriel has her voice in the narration but I mean that it is not necessarily that character that it is meant for.
As for Liv Tyler's voice in the background, that could mearly signify that her voice of youth is a memory of the past as she is recalling the tale of the Lord of the Rings.

A little thing that I forgot to mention in my first post that may or may not prove my point that Arwen is/will be the narrator for the movies: Liv Tyler did a song that is suppose to be at or around the end of the movie.
This may mean that if she did the narration at the end of the film, then this would flow well in the end connecting her character to a song by the actress who played her that may or may not have to do with Arwen's sadness of the passing world.

Are you saying that Arwen is Galadriel's daughter? Did I miss something while reading "The Lord of the Rings"?

Arwen is not Galadriel's daughter but here grandaughter. Galadriel's daughter married Elrond around the beginning of the third age. Galadriel goes all the way back to when Elfs were first born(similarion). Arwen's song is in ROTK. Cate Blanchett as Galadriel did the narration. I believe this because she went through the war of the ring in the second age. If you want to learn more read the similarion or read the appendix at the end of the ROTK.

True that Arwen was born after the second age but she could easily have been told and committed to memory the history of the middle earth and beyond from Galadriel.
Anyway, I will not continue to argue on this issue anymore since there are way too many variables that PJ controls that I am not aware of. So I will just believe my little theory and let you all on you way so we may all find out next year.
