View Full Version : Yayster's Horn of Gondor
YayBoromir!
May 28th,2003, 06:12 PM
As some people know I'm making my own Horn of Gondor - thought I'd update you on its progress so far :)
I first made the shell out of cardboard but to get the proper curvature I had to leave gaps in some of the pieces so they would slot together properly.
Then I covered the whole lot in papier mache (including the holes) and left it to dry. A few layers of papier mache later, and it was hard enough to work with.
I found some red fabric and wrapped it around the top and the middle to create a raised level on which to papier mache - these were the golden sections of the Horn.
I papier mached over the fabric which took a few days to dry - but when it did, I found that it worked quite well. I then did some more modelling on the centre section of the Horn to make it smoother (still need to do more of this)!
I then got some string and stuck it with sellotape into the patterns on the Horn - when I papier mached over these, you could see clear raised parts to create the effect of a 3D pattern.
At this point, half the Horn is white and the other is grey (papier mache) but after I have done the other half and painted it with a coat of white acrylic, gold and silver paint will be ready to be applied. When this paint dries I will add final details and then add a strap so I can carry it over my shoulder.
And of course I will take some photos to put here!
Phew!

Thanks for the update YayB. I've got a vivid imagination from what it looks like now from your discription :)
Can't wait for the pics... makes me wish I was as creative as you YayB
Do take your time and make it a masterpiece as great as Boromir himself
YayBoromir!
May 28th,2003, 08:33 PM
Well that'll be difficult, Hobbit, but I'll try  Thanks for the compliments  :cuddles:
Just a suggestion, but why don't you try making a Hobbit pipe? That would go with your character. :)

YayB you're a genious! :gofatty:
I think I might do that with clay... fun!
I'm looking forward to your pic of the horn....
YayBoromir!
May 28th,2003, 09:15 PM
Genious? Well, I don't know about that, but thank you Hobbit! :cuddles:
It sounds like a good idea to make it out of clay - I've never been too good with the stuff but because you're making it it should turn out great!
I'm glad my descriptions were clear enough - I thought they might be a bit confusing...

Thanks, Polly :)
Today I aim to finish the papier mache and put the first coat of paint on! I should have it nearly finished by the end of the weekend!

wow! i can't wait to see it!
YayBoromir!
June 6th,2003, 06:32 PM
Expectations met, it's just had its first coat of paint and is currently drying in the airing cupboard lol Not exactly spectacular! I'm getting some gold paint tomorrow so it should look a bit more colourful! :)

Thanks for the updates YayB
You don't have to be shy about the horn, we all know it's gonna be great
Can't wait to see the pics!

I've decided that since Yayster has been kind enough to update us about her project and everyone's giving comments about it, I think a thread ought to be dedicated to her project alone. In future, she can post up the pic of the completed horn in here too. So I shall split the thread.
Note: Yayster, if you wanna change the thread title or the content of your first post, just PM me.

June 6th,2003, 10:31 PM
lol now I know why you said to look here ;) I wonder why I said make one out of cardboard sometimes, I mean u were obsessing over trying to buy a replica too much :girn: but what can I expect :p I mean u r yayboromir! ;) I'm glad that your enjoying making it so much, the papier mache sounded fun. I'd love to see the finished thing :)
Saruman
June 6th,2003, 10:59 PM
It sounds like you've got everything worked out perfectly, YB! Sometimes making it is just as fun as viewing the finished product. Let's hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as it did in the movie!lol

Do keep your precioussssss well!

I look forward to seeing a pic of the finished horn. Will you be posting a pic on this thread?
YayBoromir!
June 7th,2003, 07:18 PM
I will make sure it doesn't get cut in half Saruman (i.e. make sure my brother doesn't get hold of it) lol ;)
I certainly will, Lasgalen, I will be taking pictures from different angles so you can get a feel for what it is like. I have even considered making a short film so you can see it in 3D!
Today I went out and bought some gold and silver paint and have added the first bit of colour to the horn - it's looking great! I reckon if all goes well I should have it finished by tomorrow, Monday at the latest.

I can't believe I haven't seen this thread, yet...I can't wait to see it, Yay! From all that I can tell it will be fab! ;)
Winyaél Greenleaf
June 8th,2003, 07:24 AM
You missed this thread cuz I just split it from the 'Your Creations' thread recently. lol
Yayster tells me the horn is about 37cm long and the diameter ranges from 3 to 8 (from the narrow tip to the open end). And I think she's gonna finish it up soon
YayBoromir!
June 8th,2003, 12:28 PM
 You all have such confidence in me...but is that confidence misplaced...lol
This morning I've painted the hooks silver and tomorrow we are going to go to a music shop to see if we can buy a mouthpiece so the Horn actually works. I hope we can find one and more importantly that it fits! (this was Illu's idea, thanks Illu!) Not much to go!
YayBoromir!
June 9th,2003, 05:57 PM
OK after talking on the phone last night to Igtica we have decided we are going to make a short film showing how the Horn was made and so you can get an impression of what the 3D model looks like. We also plan to add a bit of British humour in there (hehe!) lol Should be a laugh and would also give us some experience at film work!
Hobbit
June 9th,2003, 06:56 PM
Hehe great idea YayB!
I'de love to see the horn and the making off in 3D. And a good portion of British humour should be a nice bonus lol ;)
But do take your time for it YayB: you don't have to rush things up. I'm sure everyone will be happy to wait for a while, till we can see your horn when it is truly completed.
YayBoromir!
June 9th,2003, 07:12 PM
I would never rush a project such as the Horn ^_^ for Bori! :boromir:   We are going down the music shop tomorrow to get the French Horn mouthpiece which with any luck should fit - adding that extra authenticity! I have to make sure to get a silver one though. Does anyone know what kind of glue sticks metal to cardboard?
Igtica
June 9th,2003, 08:20 PM
lol, I'm I know we're british, but I'm wondering if it is typical of british humour? I mean after what you said Yay I think we have our own type of humour! It's gonna be a right laugh to make that film though, thats all i can say! I've gotta travel a little bit 4 it though ;). *thinks abouta all the weird ideas* hmmmm I wonder if we'll be classified as sane afterwards :) Well the fab horn will be in it at least! Yay:boromir:'s horn finally revived! Good luck at the music shop  !

June 10th,2003, 11:51 AM
lol As Ig said, it's *our* British Humour, so don't be expecting the typical stuff, more insane random madness!

June 10th,2003, 08:14 PM
Will the movie have sound so we can hear the horn of Gondor (assuming the mouth piece works)

June 10th,2003, 08:35 PM
Yes it will have sound, Las :) We will also be talking on it so you can hear our British accents! lol

Why all the fear? lol I can't wait to hear you both! There's nothing wrong with being typical British....;) I'm really looking forward to this....

June 11th,2003, 06:14 AM
What is it about southern counties that we need to be afraid of?
Bonos-Girl
June 11th,2003, 08:07 AM
i dont know....hm....does essex count as southern? i know a lot of scary people...lol
Igtica
June 11th,2003, 09:05 PM
lol good question BG....not to worry neither of us are from essex. Erm Lasgalen, it's just the fact that we both happen to talk in standard english, but some accents could be worse i suppose  Not to offend anyone but i don't like the Newcastle accent (jordie) or the old cockney...erm...accent.....don't no if accent is right, more like language! Apples and pears being stairs is still weird to me. Hmmm Cel u want to hear me :o thats strange, i'm kinda feeling like i'm ruining Yay's chance to shine...wait she does that already...hmmmm
Luvara
June 11th,2003, 09:36 PM
lol no need to worry! ;) I don't think ppl will care that much about your accent, more about the horn! ;) :p
Celebrían
June 12th,2003, 04:20 AM
Yes, you're right, Luv...the horn is what we are all about. ;) It will just be bonus (for me at least) to hear some accents! (I'm a sucker for them ;) )
I bet if you guys could hear mine, you might head for the hills! lol (not that I think it's bad lol....)
Lasgalen
June 12th,2003, 05:28 AM
What kind of accent do you have, Cel, that would make us head for the hills?
Celebrían
June 12th,2003, 05:40 AM
Well...let me preface by saying that I don't think I do have an accent, at least compared to other people I know, but I'm sure if you guys listened to me talk, you would think I do, but anyway...I live in the South, so there you go.....;)
and Yay, will you be wearing costumes in your video?
Lasgalen
June 12th,2003, 05:47 AM
Is there going to be a "making of" segment? You put so much work into it; you should make sure we all know how hard you worked.
Igtica
June 12th,2003, 02:56 PM
lol you peeps really have no idea what me and Yayster have got planned! There will be a bit where Yayster will say how she made the horn though, so no worries;) Ooo I've just realised that I'm gonna get the chance to see the actually horn made....*wonders if Yay will let her touch it?*
YayBoromir!
June 12th,2003, 04:04 PM
In regards to costumes, I don't think we will have any in particular. But we will see... ;)
Iggy, it's mine, my preciousssssss, but of course we will let you touch it won't we precioussss? lol Las there will be a bit where I will tell you how I made it as Ig said, we have to make that a substantial part without it going too hyper!
Cel I know you have a soft spot for accents! hehe

June 13th,2003, 07:45 AM

June 27th,2003, 08:19 PM
Oh dear! I didn't realise that it'd been released to the public yet! ARGH! *hides behind Yayster*. It was really random though, we just couldn't decide what to do with ourselves. My voice sounds awful on that (actually slightly worse than usual). Sorry about my bad Gollum impression too. Though the bit in the middle where I filmed Yay when she got angry was a slight peek into how much we messed around. We have about a minute if out takes too, and they're actually quite funny......jumping up and down hmmm  The horn appearing at the end was us messing around as well (my idea...sorry). I'm glad that you enjoyed it :). It's nice that it's enjoyed almost as much as how much we enjoyed making it. I hope it wasn't too disappointing Las.
Lasgalen
June 28th,2003, 08:45 AM
