OK.....just as a matter of interest, has anyone else read these wonderful books? They follow the adventurings of Fafherd a barbarian Northerner and his companion the thief and assassin, the Gray Mouser, thru the decadent world of Newhon. They have this wonderful dry humour thru them , that makes them still some of the best in the field, IMHO, as well as some of the earliest....
Ive posed this question before, and never had any response, but i cant believe im the only one who's read them...maybe some of the older folks have?
these are after all, along with the Conan books by Robert E Howard, some of the seminal works of the Sword and Sorcery genre....
heres hopin'........ lol lol

any library should have them and i can still get reprints in the book shops so i should imagine that that would be true anywhere in the world. Definitely an SF Fantasy specialist shop should have them and Amazon prob do too, tho ive not looked as i dont buy books online

Catz,

I read these books back when I was a pre-teen and I remember not liking them very much. I have no definitive answer for you on this (and I haven't thought about them in years) but I was definitely not interested. I actually gave these books a try before LOTR and Narnia. I can't remember much of the content but maybe the books would be more appealing to an 'older' audience? Say 14 or 15  ?

I'll tell ya what ... I have simply enjoyed and respected every post I have had the pleasure to read from you notworthy ! I'll find them again and give them another whirl ... betcha I like 'em now!

theres always differences in taste Algy, tho i read them when i was about 12 i think...and have loved them ever since. They are adult books really. But even if they are read just as a basic primer in the genre theyre worth a look. not every writer has the likes of Michael Moor**** say of him,
"A writer who is, in my opinion, still the greatest of us all"
or Raymond Feist.
"Most fantasy writers, if asked, admit that Fritz Leiber is our spiritual father..."
One thing tho....i wouldnt read "Ill Met in Lankhmar" which is the first one, first ;) lol ...its actually one of the slowest....i prefer Swords and Ice Magic.
You never know, tastes change.....you may enjoy them better a second time...they are worth the effort:grin:

yeah theyre old.....from the golden days of pulp lol....i think they were first published in the thirties or forties....but the fact that theyre still being printed now says a lot about them....i somehow doubt that therell be that many authors publishing today wholl still be being reprinted in 60 odd years...Lieber was a fabulous author who deserves a wider readership.

mmm yeah...and its great to see....kind of like the old Gollanz "classic SF" series with the yellow covers....hehehe youre probably the only one old enough to remember those Elendur (assuming you ever came across em).....'part from me that is lol lol but its really good to see the old authors being brought to the younger readers attention....new stuff is great, but it only builds on what has come before;)

a bell the name sounds familiar but don't think that I have read them.. was not so much into SF when younger.. and as I am a little younger (!?) than you I might have missed them!
Did you ever get to read the Alaric Tavellin .. Widowmaker series by Peter Morrow.. I quite liked them!?

yeah you got into Fantasy/SF later didnt you? whereas i was reading it right from when i was 10-11, or younger, and had older brothers and sisters who were into it too, so there was no shortage of material...LOTR, Narnia, Alan Garners books, and then the adult stuff....Dune, Tanith Lees work, Asimov and so on.......i LOOOOOVE books:loveyou:

I think I read the Narnia series when I was about 9 yrs old.. possibly even younger.. didn't read LOTR until 11/12.. but with our vast age difference.. I am sure that I started much later than you!!:p
Reading some new stuff right now.. some is not too bad other stuff is not too good! But will post here when finished!

yeah id have read Narnia or at least "the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" at around 7-8....but i meant that i was reading adult SF and Fantasy relatively early...i think i read Tanith Lees, "the Birthgrave" at around10 or 11...about the same time i read LOTR the first time, and i was into SF short stories, hence Asimov, Piers Anthony, Fritz Lieber, Clarke and so on, as well as the "young adult" fantasy stories avaliable, like Garners "the Owl Service" and Susan Coopers "The Dark is Rising" series
yes please do...im always interested in hearing opinions on new books:thumbs:
