I will be writing some articles for the Armory section of the WotR.net, and would like to know if there are any questions or topics any of you would like more information on?

Swordsmanship techniques...or the different types of swords, and their history. That would be cool. Can't wait to see what articles you write!

Cool!
I'd like to know about all the different types of swords and weapons... ancient, modern, western. eastern... And it would be great if there'd be more emphasis on special swords used by famous personalities.

And also the different ways different swords should be handled and types of swordplay undertaken by specific groups of people in the different eras!

Good luck with the articles!

Orc! I am glad of your return. Maybe now you can get the Uruk-Hai Scimitar you have been waiting for!

Also, we can throw around some ideas for the next Armoury article.

Huzah on both accounts!

It is definately good to be home. One nice thing to come out of this has been that I managed to pick up a laptop to help me do my sergeantly duties and provide me amusement during off hours, so now I get to sit in bed, watch the History channel and catch up here.

thanks again for the welcome home and all the support you guys have given me!

Welcome back Orc, glad you are able to rejoin us entdraught

Swordsman, how about an article on why Glamdring and Hadhafang could be so different even though they were made for a Father and Daughter (I know it does not appear in the books). Or for instance how Glamdring could be so different from the rest of the Elven weaponry. It would be interesting to hear a discussion on how styles in smithcraft could evolve

Finrod, you being my great grandpa and all you surprise me some times, Glamdring wasn't made for Elrond, so there's no link between Hadhafang and Glamdring, Glamdring was made for your friend Turgon of Ondolinde (better known as Gondolin) , and as far as I recall he never used it in battle, the only weapons he used in battle were the ones that later Tuor founf on Vinyamar, so I would say it was a sword intended to be a royal one, an don the sack of Gondolin it was lost and ended up in the Orcs' caves, as well as Sting, which might have been another Noldor blade of Gondolin origin.
The difference on it I would say lies in this, A sword like Galmdring is more suitable for wielding in horse back, and Hadhafang is of a more close quarters sabre nature.

Nilion,
Tolkien never said that it was used in battle, infact I can only think of Ringil being refered to in use by an Elfking/prince in battle. However, it could be assumed Glamdring was used in the Fall of Gondolin and was taken as spoil and ended up in a troll cave to be found by Gandalf & Co. thousands of years later. However, from the jewel encrusted description given by Tolkien, it would seem that it would have been an ornamental sword by today's standards. And Hadafang was described as being made for Idril, Turgon's daughter ( I know, it has no canon basis but was manufactured by New Line, or whoever).
My point was a suggestion on the evolution of sword form over the years as an attempt to overcome advances in armor or other specialization
Grandpa? I had no children... atleast that anyone knows about...

Well yes I had forgotten about Idril in all of this, you are right about the Father -Daughter thing then, now I also think Glamdring was more ornamental than any other thing, but well it's a dodgy one when it comes to define Hadhafang I suppose.
Hahaha and yes Grandpa, grandma told me you had these loss of memory periods;) :naughty:
