This is probably not the time or place for this, but I think Jane Austen is one of the best authors of the Pre-Victorian era. She knew so much about society and human behavior. She was, and is, amazing! :knight:

Yeah you could say that !
Though i am not 100 % sure but i agree and i think that what you are saying is so . She deffinitely knew a lot about society and human behaviour. I noticed that in the only book of hers which i've read "Pride And Prejudise" .........she is a classical and rather interesting author - yep.

Have any of you seen the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice? The chick who plays Elizabeth is a bit too silly for my liking. She giggles a lot. But I love Darcy and Bingly! Colin Firth is amazing!

I've always enjoyed reading the books of Jane Austen. I like reading the novels of the Bronte Sisters also.

well, all of Jane Austen's novels r good, i also enjoyed the books by the Bronte sisters. I own the BBC version of P&P, i would of liked it more if Colin Firth had more 2 say, but he doesn't say much in the book so i suppose they wanted 2 keep it as close to the story as possible!

Sense and Sensibility. Emma Thompson did a fair job with the screenplay for the film, but left out my favourite scene. (SOB) Worth a read, though.

I love P&P. I like the humour in it. I really love the BBC adaptation as well, it's one of those programmes that when i see the end i get a silly grin on my face coz it's soooo romanticlol No really i do.
Sense and Sensibility is also v. gud (the book and the film).
Has ne1 seen Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow in? I thought that was excellent.

God I'm a huge P&P fan...and the BBC/A&E adaption was da ****z (can I say that here?)...Colin Firth played a magnificent role...death to Caroline!
I've also read (and seen the movies) Sense and Sensibilty and Emma. I didn't like S&S all that much by enjoyed Emma almost as much as P&P.
Has anyone else seen Tom Jones and Vanity Fair?

Sorry Aroiwin! Okay, feeling like a complete dumb *** here! Although you can't mistake the gender of my handle, my age always sends people for a loop. I always get mistaken for teenie-bopper 14 year olds. (I'm 25.)
Again, sorry. Just thought that Aroiwin sounded a lot like Arwen and perhaps you changed it. Oopsie!

Pil, have you read "Bridgit Jones - The Edge of Reason"? She does an interview with Colin Firth in it. Hillarious! She keeps asking him how many times they had to wet his shirt down!lol

Which one did you like better, Undomiel? The first one or the second one? I liked the first better. The second book lost me when she got arrested in Thailand. At least, I think it was Thailand....:p

August 15th,2002, 11:06 PM
oo that's difficult. i agree it did go slightly off track wid the whole thailand thing. errmmm...i liked the first one coz it was sorta a P&P plot and also obv. coz it was v funny, but that Colin Firth interview and the whole thing wid Mark's housekeeper's son were so, so funny. I guess I'd probably go wid the first but it's a hard call.

I have not read P&P yet, butI love Emma and S&S. I liked both movie versions, but I don't like Kate Winslet very much. Emma with Gwenith Paltrow is great and I found it quite humorous and I love Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightly.
Does anyone like Mansfield Park? This is the rare case when I actually like the movie version better. It was just recently done, and I don't know any of the actors in it. I enjoyed it much more than the book.

Yeah, liked it, but what was with the whole freaky bit about slavery, rape, etc? I remember thinking: I don't think that was in the book! Wierd. But then again, they are first cousins and they get married. Ugh.

Funny, I post and it goes out of my control! Anyhow, there is a complete edition of The Watsons, but it is completed byJoan Aiken, who wrote sequels to other Austen Novels. I have it if you need more information. Mr. Darcy was meant to be tacit, that's why Colin Firth's role was restrained. Did anyone ever see the black and white version of P&P? The charactors have on Victorian instead of Imperial style dresses. It's quite amusing. The costumes were excellent in the A&E/BBC version! Also, has anyone read and loved Norhtanger Abbey, a knockoff of the Gothic novel?
Goldilocks
August 17th,2002, 05:36 AM
No, never read it. Have a copy somewhere, though. I've seen the B&W P&P. Man, it was bad! Hollywood at its worst. There is another version of P&P also made by BBC in 1985, I think. It too is very good. Don't like the Darcy too much, but Lizzy is wonderful!

I saw the B&W version. I couldnt help finding it a bit funny, especially seeing as I'd already seen the BBC version. I started reading Northanger Abbey, but it was ages ago and i didnt really understand it then-i probably would now but I cant find my copy (i know its here somewhere).

The women who played the Bennet sisters in that movie claimed that, first, being in their early to late thirties, they were trying to remember what it was like being those ages, and they were also trying to remember what it was like being virgins! But, yes, Austen's humour is very subtle sometimes, but Norhtanger is hilarious!!! I promise!! Really!!

Did you ever read in Bridget Jones - Edge of reason, the interview w/ Colin Firth? She (Brigit) asks him if he thought Elizabeth and Darcy would have sex before the wedding. His answer was: "Definitely". Ludicrous, in my opinion! Whatcha all think?

That just did not happen. Screw up my entire opinion of my dear Jane Austen! :( Anyhow, I suppose I should read BJD. Is it good?
Goldilocks
August 30th,2002, 04:51 AM
Oh, Arwen! You definitely have to read it! It's hillarious! The book is very different from the film. I loke them both as separate objects. I didn't care too much of the sequal of BJD. Kinda a waste of time. It just got a little annoying. Helen Fielding wrote BJD after P&P, and the sequal after 'Emma'. BJD is a good read, though.

Brie, Ricotta, and Havarti are favourites.
What's your favourite part of P&P? I love when Elizabeth reads Darcy's letter. It's so well written!
Arwen Elf

Because he's so well bred. (Ha, ha.) Aanyhow, I think I like the part where he proposes to her and she rejects him, only because he was being a jerk and he deserved it. But also, when Elizabeth goes to Pemberly. . . . :)

"In vain I have struggled, it will not do. . ." by far, one of the best parts in the book, you're quite right.
Have you read S&S, Arwen?

Yes, I have! I hate Willoughby! He's such a jerk!!!!!! What about Northanger?

September 7th,2002, 03:26 AM
Well, over the summer, when I went to Florida, we rented the movie, but, because of popular demand, I didn't get to see the entire thing.:( verymad But I went with my friend, so I didn't really have a choice. It didn't live up to the book, though it was pretty good.:elfqueen: Who did you like better, Elanor or Marianne?

September 7th,2002, 05:49 AM
Elinor was way too old. That's too bad that you didn't get to see it all. I went to the Cook Islands this summer, and took a copy along with me. I couldn't see the picture all too well (New Zealand VCR's are different) but could still hear it, and as there is nothing on the one channel in Rarotonga, I listened to my movies at night when bored. I do like it. The soundtrack is excellent!
I was disapointed that...shoot, the ckick who plays Elinor (drawn a blank) also wrote the script, and when I saw the movie, I was most disapointed that they left out my favourite part. The part when a drunk Willoughby goes to see Maryanne when she's ill and talks with Elinor. It is such an important scene and they left it out! By far, my biggest complaint about the film.
There's also another version, about twenty years old. It's BBC and you'd probably be able to find it in Chapters. The costumes are diplorable, and they ruined some scenes, again the Elinor is bad, but the Maryanne and Willoughby are fantastic. Plus, it has by favourite scene. I still like it.

lol You had to LISTEN to the movie? Which movie do you like better, P&P or S&S? From what I got to see, I really liked Pride and Prejudice better, but maybe that's because it had about five hours of footaage, so nothing was really left out. And, also, Colin Firth was in it.:loveyou: :smooch: :cuddles: Not that I've really seen any other movie with him in it, but. . . . .:naughty:

Colin Firth has been in so many movies! He's the kind of actor you don't really notice, because he gets into character so well. He was also in Bridget Jones' Diary, as well as Shakespeare in Love.
I like both S&S and P&P equally. I think I like the old BBC version of P&P more than the new one., despite yummy Colin Firth. I just feel it's more acurate to the book.
Yeah, we had to listen to it. The picture flipped, but the sound was the same, and there was NOTHING on. There's only so many nights you can go out, especially since we were there three weeks, so, we listened to the movie. Ahhh, the things you do when you're desperate. ..

lol I don't think I've seen the older BBC version. . . . I don't watch movies very often. I want to see every single Jane Austen-based movie evre made!:flamer: There is a list of all of them in The Friendly Jane Austen. That is one of the best Jane Austen books (as in, about Jane Austen) EVER!:)
