He heard behind his head a creaking and scraping sound. Raising himself on one arm he looked, and saw now in the pale light that they were in a kind of passage which behind them turned a corner. Round the corner a long arm was groping, walking on its fingers towards Sam, who was lying nearest, and towards the hilt of the sword that lay upon him

It is rather...

'Tom stooped, removed his hat, and came into the dark chamber, singing:

Get out! You old Wight! Vanish in the sunlight!
Shrivel like the cold mist, like the winds go wailing,
Out into the barren lands far beyond the mountains!
Come never here again! Leave your barrow empty!
Lost and forgotten be, darker than the darkness,
Where gates stand for ever shut, till the world is mended.

At these words there was a cry and part of the inner end of the chamber fell in with a crash. Then there was a long trailing shriek, fading away into an unguessable distance; and after that silence.'

Hop along, my little friends, up the Withywindle!
Tom's going on ahead candles for to kindle.
Down west sings the Sun: soon you will be groping.

(Welcome back Sam!)
The dragon is withered,
His bones are now crumbled;
His armour is shivered,
His splendour is humbled!
Though sword shall be rusted,
And throne and crown perish
With strength that men trusted
And wealth that they cherish,
Here grass is still growing,
And leaves are yet swinging,
The white water flowing,
And elves are yet singing
Come! Tra-la-la-lally!
Come back to the valley!

The stars are far brighter
Than gems without measure,
The moon is far whiter
Than silver in treasure:
The fire is more shining
On hearth in the gloaming
Than gold won by mining,
So why go a-roaming?
O! Tra-la-la-lally!
Come back to the valley!

O! Where are you going,
So late in returning?
The river is flowing,
The stars are all burning!
O! whither so laden,
So sad and so dreary?
Here elf and elf-maiden
Now welcome the weary
With Tra-la-la-lally!
Come back to the valley!
Tra-la-la-lally
Fa-la-la-lally
Fa-la!

Sing all ye joyful

Sing all ye joyful, now sing all together!
The wind’s in the tree-top, the wind’s in the heather;
The stars are in blossom, the moon is in flower,
And bright are the windows of Night in her tower.

Dance all ye joyful, now dance all together!
Soft is the grass, and let foot be like feather!
The river is silver, the shadows are fleeting;
Merry is May-time, and merry our meeting.

Sing we now softly, and dreams let us weave him!
Wind him in slumber and there let us leave him!
The wanderer sleepeth. Now soft be his pillow!
Lullaby! Lullaby! Alder and willow!

Sigh no more Pine, till the wind of the morn!
Fall Moon! Dark be the land!
Hush! Hush! Oak, Ash and Thorn!
Hushed be all water, till dawn is at hand!

Day is ended
dim my eyes
but journey long
before me lies
Farewell, friends !
I hear the call
The ship's beside
the stony wall
Foam is white
and waves are grey
beyond the sunset
leads my way
Foam is salt
the wind is free
Ihear the rising
of the sea
Farewell,friends
The sail are set ,
the wind is east,
the mooring fret
Shadows long
before me lie,
beneath the
ever-blending sky
But island lie
behind the sun
that i shall raise
ere all is done
Lands there are
to west of west
where night is quiet
and sleep is rest
Gulded by the
Lonely star
beyond the utmost
harbour- bar
I'll find the havens
fair and free;
and beaches of
the starlit sea
Ship my ship
I seek the west ,
and fields a
mountains
ever blest
Farewell to
Middle Earth at last
I see the star
above your mast

This is from Bilbo's
Last Song

Elfdaughter
October 23rd,2003, 03:42 PM
I love that!! (I can't actually find it anywhere though............)

'Sam began to sing.

His voice sounded thin and quavering in the cold dark tower, the voice of a forlorn and weary hobbit that no listening orc could possibly mistake for the clear song of an Elven-lord. He murmured old childish tunes out of the Shire, and snatches of Mr Bilbo’s rhymes that came into his mind like fleeting glimpses of the country of his home. And then suddenly new strength rose in him, and his voice rang out, while words of his own came unbidden to fit the simple tune.

In western lands beneath the Sun
The flowers may rise in Spring,
The trees may bud, the waters run,
The merry finches sing.
Or there maybe ‘tis cloudless night
And swaying beeches bear
The Elven-stars as jewels white
Amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey’s end I lie
In darkness buried deep,
Beyond all towers strong and high,
Beyond all mountains steep,
Above all shadows rides the Sun
And Stars for ever dwell,
I will not say the Day is done
Nor bid the Stars farewell.'

Beyond the Sun, beyond the Moon, the foam was on the Sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden Tree.

To the sea, to the sea 1 The white gulls are crying
The wind is blowing and the white foam is flying
West , wsy away , the round sun is falling
Grey ship . grey ship , do you hear then calling
The voices of my people that have gone before me ?
I will leave , iwill leave the woods that bore me
For days are ending and our year failing
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing
Long are the waves on the last shore falling
Sweet are the voices in the lost Isle calling
In Eressea in Elvenhome that no man can discover
Where the leaves fall not : land my people forever !

This is Legola's song of the sea

"...An Elven-maid there was of old,
A shining star by day:
Her mantle white was hemmed with gold,
Her shoes of silver-grey....

...Where now she wanders none can tell,
In sunlight or in shade;
For lost of yore was Nimrodel
And in the mountains strayed....

...Of old he was an Elven-king,
A lord of tree and glen,
When golden were the boughs in spring
In fair Lothlorien....

...But from the West has come no word,
And on the Hither Shore
No tidings Elven-folk have heard
Of Amroth evermore..."

That's ok!! I thought I recognised it!

(And yes...I DO know this quote off by heart...it's one of my favorite bits!)

Then with a crash came a great ringing shout: ra-hoom-ha! The trees quivered and bent as if a gust had struck them. There was another pause, and then a marching music began like solemn drums, and above the rolling beats and booms there welled voices singing high and strong.

We come, we come with roll of drum, ta-runda runda runda rom!

The Ents were coming, ever nearer and louder rose their song:

We come, we come with horn and drum, ta-runa runa runa rom!

Bregalad picked up the hobbits and strode from his house.

Before long they saw the marching line approaching, the Ents were swinging along with great strides down the slope towards them. Treebeard was at their head, and some fifty followers were behind him, two abreast, keeping step with their feet and beating time with their hands upon their flanks. As they drew near the flash and flicker of their eyes could be seen.

‘Hoom, hom! Here we come with a boom, here we come at last!’ called Treebeard when he caught sight of Bregalad and the hobbits. ‘Come join the Moot! We are off. We are off to Isengard!’

‘To Isengard!’ the Ents cried in many voices.

‘To Isengard!’

To Isengard! Though Isengard be ringed and barred with doors of stone,
Though Isengard be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone,
We go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door.
For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars – we got to war!
To land of gloom with tramp of doom, with roll of drum, we come, we come.
To Isengard with doom we come!
With doom we come, with doom we come!

So they sang as they marched southwards.

I know , its all wrong by rights we shouldn't even be here ,but we are.
Its like in the great stories Mr Frodo , the ones that really mattered , full of darkness and danger they where, and sometmes you didn't want to know the end, Because how could the end be happy ?
How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad has happened.

Theoden
VICTORY WE HAVE VICTORY

Sam
But in the end , its only a passing thing ... this shadow, Even darkness must pass, a new day will come
Ans when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer !
Those were the stories that stayed with you that ment something .
Even if you where too small to undestand why .
But i think Mr Frodo , i do understand, I know now floks in those stories had lots of chance's of turning back only they didn't they kept going because they where holding on to something.

Frodo
What are we holding on to Sam?

Sam
Thats there is some good in this world and its worth fighting for .

ok... quote: (hehe)

"There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountians, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."

'I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew,
Of wind I sang, a wind there came and in the branches blew.
Beyond the Sun, beyond the Moon, the foam was on the Sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden Tree.
In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven Tirion,
There long the golden leaves have grown upon the branching years,
While here beside the Sundering Seas now fall the Elven-tears.
O Lórien! The Winter comes, the bare and leafless Day,
The leaves are falling in the stream, the River flows away.
O Lórien! Too long have dwelt upon this Hither Shore,
And in a fading crown have twined the golden elanor.
But if of ships I now should sing, what ship would come to me,
What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a Sea?'

Aragorn stayed his boat as the Swan-ship drew alongside. The Lady ended her song and greeted them. 'We have come to bid you our last farewell,' she said, 'and to speed you with blessings from our land'.

(Oh, there is so much to say about Galadriel.......but I think I will quote this: )

"...For you little gardener and lover of trees,......In this box there is earth from my orchard, and such blessing as Galadriel has still to bestow is upon it. It will not keep you on your road, nor defend you against any peril; but if you keep it and see your home again at last, then perhaps it may reward you. Though you should find all barren and laid waste, there will be few gardens in Middle-earth that will bloom like your garden, if you sprinkle this earth there. Then you may remember Galadriel, and catch a glimpse far off of Lorien, that you have seen only in our winter. For our spring and our summer are gone by, and they will never be seen on earth again save in memory..."

Farewell Song of
Merry & Pippin

Farewell , we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must away ere break of day
Far over wood and mountain tall

To Rivendell, where Elves yet dwell
In glades beneath the misty fell,
Through moor and waste we ride in haste ,
And whither then we cannot tell.

With foes ahead, behind us dread,
Beneath the sky shall be our bed
Until at last out toil be passed,
Our journey done our errand sped

We must away ! We must away 1
We ride before the break of day!
sorry if there any mistake as i had my 5 month granson on my lap and he wanted to help

There was a great battle long ago, yes, so they told him

Tall men with long swords, and terrible Elves, and Orcses shrieking.
They fought on the plain for days and months at the Black Gates.
But the Marshes have grown since then, swallowed up the graves,

It was evening, and the stars were glimmering in the eastern sky as they passed the ruined oak and turned and went on down the hill between the hazel-thickets. Sam was silent, deep in his memories. Presently he became aware that Frodo was singing softly to himself, singing the old walking song, but the words were not quite the same.

Still around the corner there may wait,
A new road or a secret gate,
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run,
West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

And as if in answer, from down below, coming up the road out of the valley, voices sang:

A! Elbereth Gilthoniel!
Sillivren penna miriel
O menel aglar elenath,
Gilthoniel! A! Elbereth!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees
The starlight on the Western Seas.

Frodo and Sam halted and sat silent in the soft shadows, until they saw a shimmer as the travellers came towards them.

Yes iam coming said Frofo The ring bearers should go together !

"Where are you going" , master cried sam , though at last he understood what was happening

"To the Havens Sam' said Frodo
And i can't come "
No Sam , not yet anyway , not further then the Havens .
Though you too a Ring Bearer , if for a little while , your time may come .
Do not be too sad Sam .
You cannot be torn in two , you will have to be whole , for many years .
You have so much to enjoy and to be , to do '
But said Sam and tears statred in his eyes , i thought we were going to enjoy the Shire , too for many years , after all you have done .
I thought so too , once . but i have been too deeply hurt, sam .
i tired to save the Shire , nad its been saved , but not for me . Its must often be so Sam, when things are in danger , someone has to give them up,lose them , so others may keep them .

Then Frodo kissed Merry and Pippin and a last of all sam and went aboard and the sail was drawn up and the wind blew , and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth;and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost.

But to Sam the evening deepen into darkness as he stood at the Haven ; and as he looked at at the grey sea he saw only shadows on the water that was soon lost in the west .
There he still stood far into the night , hearing only the sigh and murmur of the waves on the shore of Middle Earth and the sound of them sank deep into his heart .
Beside him stood Merry and Pippin, and they were silent.

O Orofarne Lassemista, Carnimirie!
O rowan fair, upon her hair how white the blossom lay!
O rowan mine, I saw you shine upon a summer’s day
Your rind so bright, your leaves so light, your voice so cool and soft,
Upon your head how golden-red the crown you bore aloft!
O rowan dead, upon your head your hair is dry and grey,
Your crown is spilled, your voice is stilled for ever and a day.
O Orofarne, Lassemista, Carnimirie!'

Every time I see that, I start singing it - from the radio version of LOTR!! lol

Ent When Spring unfolds the beechen leaf, and sap is in the bough,
When light is on the wild-wood stream, and wind is on the brow,
When stride is long, and breath is deep, and keen the mountain-air
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is fair.

Entwife

When Spring is come to garth and field, and corn is in the blade,
When blossom like a shining snow is on the orchard laid.
When shower and Sun upon the Earth with fragrance fill the air,
I’ll linger here, and will not come, because my land is fair.

Ent

When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold,
Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold,
When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West,
Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best.

Entwife

When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown,
When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town,
When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,
I’ll linger here beneath the Sun because my land is best!

Ent

When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay,
When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day,
When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain
I’ll look for thee, and call to thee, I’ll come to thee again!

Entwife

When Winter comes, and singing ends, when darkness falls at last,
When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past,
I’ll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again
Together we will take the road beneath the bitter rain.

Both

Together we will take the road that leads into the West,
And far away, will find a land where both our hearts may rest.

Treebeard ended his song. ‘That is how it goes,’ he said. ‘It is Elvish, of course: lighthearted, quickworded, and soon over. I daresay it is fair enough. But the Ents could say more on their side, if they had time! But now I am going to stand up and take a little sleep. Where will you stand?’

Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea:
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar,

And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

is hot water that smokes and steams.

O! water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is beer , if drink we lack ,

Hill and water under sky ,
Pass them by Pass them by !

Still around the corner there may wait
A new road or secert gate ,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the moon or to the sun
Apple, thorn,and nut and sloe,
Let then go! Let them go !
Sand and stone and pool and dell
Fare you well ! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then the world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade !

He chanted a song of wizardry
Of piercing, opening, of treachery
Revealing, uncovering, betraying.
Then sudden Felagund there swaying
Sang in answer a song of staying,
Resisting, battling against power,
Of secrets kept, strength like a tower
And trust unbroken, freedom, escape;
Of changing and of shifting shape
Of snares elude, broken traps,
The prison opening, the chain that snaps,
Backwards and forwards swayed their song.
Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong
The chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
And all the magic and might he brought
Of Elvenesse into his words.
Softly on the gloom they heard the birds
Singing afar in Nargothrond,
The singing of the Sea beyond,
Beyond the western world, on sand,
On sand of pearls in Elvenland.
Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing
In Valinor, the red blood flowing
Beside the Sea, where the Noldor slew
The Foamriders, and stealing drew
The white ships with their white sails
From lamplit havens. The wind wails,
The wolf howls. The ravens flee.
The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea.
The captives sad in Angband mourn.
Thunder rumbles, the fires burn –
And Finrod fell before the throne.

From dark Dunharrow in the dim morning
with thane and captain rode Thengel's son:
to Edoras he came, the ancient halls
of the Mark-wardens mist-enshrouded;
golden timbers were in gloom mantled.
Farewell he bade to his free people,
hearth and high-seat, and the hallowed places,
where long he had feasted ere the light faded.
Forth rode the king, fear behind him,
fate before him. Fealty kept he;
oaths he had taken, all fulfilled them.
Forth rode Theoden. Five nights and days
east and onward rode the Eorlingas
six thousand spears to Sunlending.
Mundburg the mighty under Mindolluin,
Sea-kings' city in the South-kingdom
foe-beleaguered, fire-encircled.
Doom drove them on. Darkness took them,
horse and horseman; hoofbeats afar
sank into silence: so the song tells us.

Another Mearas in the war performed greater deeds still.
He was Shadowfax and, breaking the law that none but Kings, and Prince's might ride the Mearas, he carried the White Rider, the Istari Mithrandir, who was also named Gandalf.
Shadowfax was stout -hearted and strong-limbed, for he stood firm with the White Rider against the terror of the Nazgul and outran even the loathsome Winged Beast.

Day is ended,
din my eye's
but journey long
before me lie's

Fairwell, friends!
I hear the call
The ship's beside
the stony wall

Foam is white
and waves are grey:
beyond the sunset
leads my way

Foam is salt,
the wind is free:
I hear the rising
of the sea

Farewell, friends!
The sails are set,
the wind is east,
the moorings fret

Shadows long
before me lie,
beneath the
ever-bending sky

But islands lie
behind the sun
that i shall raise
ere all is done

Lands there are
to west of west,
where night is quiet
and sleep is rest

Guided by the
Lonely Star,
beyond the utmost
harbour-bar

I'll find the havens
fair and free,
and beaches of
the Starlit Sea

Ship, my ship!
I seek the west ,
and fields
and mountains
ever blest

Farewell to
Middle-earth at last,
I see the star
above your mast!

On september the twenty-first they set out together, Frodo on the pony that had borne him all the way from Minas Tirith, and was now called Strider; and sam on his beloved bill.
Sam was silent, deep in his memories, presenrly he became aware that frodo was singing softy to himself, singing the old walking song , but the words were not quite the same .

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a serect gate;
And though I oft have passed them by ,

Shall tajke the hidden paths that run
West of the moon, east of the sun

And the shipwent out into the High Sea and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

But to Sam the evening deepened to darkness as he stood at the haven: and as he looked at the grey sea he saw only shadow on the waters that was soon lost in the west.

There still he stood far into the night, hearing only sigh and murmur of the waves on the shores of middle -earth, and the sound of them sank deep into his heart . Beside him stood Merry and Pippin and they where silent.

At last the three companions turned away, and never again looking back they rode slowy homewards: and they spoke no word to one another until they came back to the shire, but each had great comfort in his friends on the long grey road.

At last they rode over the downs and took the east road, and then Merry and Pippin rode on to Buckland: and already they where singing again as they went away .

But Sam turned to Bywater, and so came back up the hill, as the day was ending once more . And he went on, and there was yellow light, and fire within : and the evening meal was ready, and he was expected.

And rose drew him in, and set him in his chair, and put little Elanor upon his lap .

He drew a deep breath, " Well, Iam back" he said

i don't know about crying at the movie but i know that part in the book does it to me everytime

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.
Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole,
filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell,
nor yet a dry, bare sandy hole with nothing in it
to sit down on or to eat:
it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.
It had a perfectly round door like a porthole,
painted green,
with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle.
The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel:
a very comfortable tunnel without smoke,
with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted,
provided with polished chairs.

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed.
Mists and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows
The West Wind comes walking, and about the walls it goes.
'What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight?
Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight?'
'I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey;
I saw him walk in empty lands, until he passed away
Into the shadows of the North. I saw him then no more.
The North Wind may have heard the horn of the song of Denethor.'

From the mouths of the sea the south wind flies , from the

The wailing of the gulls it bears, and at the gate it moans
What news from the south , O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve?
Where now is Boromir the fair ? He tarries and i grieve;
Ask not of me where he both dwell-so many bones there lie
On white shores and the dark shores under stormy skys
So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing sea
Ask of the north wind news of them the north wind sends
to me
O Boromir! beyond the gate the seaward road runs south,
But you come with the wailing gulls from the grey
sea's mouth.'

In the midst of the vessel sat Celeborn and behind him stood Galadriel, tall and white , a circlet of gloden flowers was in her hair , and in her hand she held a harp, and she sang .
Sad and sweet was the sound of her voice in cool clear air ;

I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew
Of wind i sang , a wind there come and in the branches blew
Beyond the sun , beyond the moon, the foam was on the sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden tree.
Beneath the stars of Ever-eve in Eldamar it shone ,
In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven Tirion.

There long the gloden leaves have grown upon the branching years ,
While here beyond the Sundering sea now fall the Elven -tears
O Lorien! the winter comes, the bare and Leafless Day
The leaves are falling in the stream, the River flows away
O Lorien! too long i have dwelt upon this Hither Shore
And in a fading crown have twined the golden elanor
But if of ship i now should sing, what ship would come to me ,
Waht ship would bear meever back across so wide a sea?

Aragorn stayed his boat as the swan -ship drew alongside .
The lady ended her song and greeted them.
We have come to bid our last farewell; she said

yip! Well done!!

Hmm... from the Book of Lost Tales:

In the vales of Aryador
By the wooded inland shore
Green the lakeward bents and meads
Sloping down to murmurous reeds
That whisper in the dusk o'er Aryador:

'Do you hear the many bells
Of the goats upon the fells
Where the valley tumbles downward from the pines?
Do you hear the blue woods moan
When the Sun has gone alone
To hunt the mountain-shadows in the pines?

She is lost among the hills
And the upland slowly fills
With the shadow-folk that murmur in the fern;
And still there are the bells
And the voices on the fells
While Eastward a few stars begin to burn.

Men are kindling tiny gleams
Far below by mountain-streams
Where they dwell among the beechwoods near the shore,
But the great woods on the height
Watch the waning western light
And whisper to the wind of things of yore,

When the valley was unknown,
And the waters roared alone,
And the shadow-folk danced downward all the night,
When the Sun had fared abroad
Through great forests unexplored
And the woods were full of wandering beams of light.

Then were voices on the fells
And a sound of ghostly bells
And a march of shadow-people o'er the height.
In the mountains by the shore
In forgotten Aryador
There was dancing and was ringing;
There were shadow-people singing
Ancient songs of olden gods in Aryador.'
