:o Wow. Geez. I really need to pick up some of the HoME books...what is that poem about, Elfy? I've never heard of "Aryador". (or is that Eriador in early form? Or an early form of Aman? It talks about gods in Aryador...)
"Farewell we call to the hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must away ere break of day
Far over wood and mountain tall."

It's a song about Nimrodel, who travelled into the southern lands of Middle-earth and became lost in the White Mountains.
Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still around the corner we may meet
A sudden standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!
Still around the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run,
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn and nut and sloe
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!
Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We'll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And to bed! And then to bed!

Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing
Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended
over death , over dread, over doom lifed
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.
But merry stood at the foot of the green mound , and wept, and when the song was ended he arose and cried :

Theoden: "My eyes darken."
Éowyn: "No...No, I am going to save you."
Théoden: "You already did. Éowyn, my body is broken. You have to let me go..."
[Éowyn parts her lips but says nothing. She continues to stroke her uncle's hair as he speaks.]
Théoden: "I go to my fathers in whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed."
[They look at each other and Théoden finally says his last words.]
Théoden: "Éowyn...!"

Then one of the knight's took the banner from the hand of Guthlaf the banner-bearer who lay dead and he lifted it up.
Slowly Theoden opened his eyes, seeing the banner he made a sign that should be givien to Eomer .
Hail, the king of the mark he said "Ride now to victory ! Bid Eowyn farewell ! And so he died , and knew not that Eowyn lay near him
And those who stood by wept, crying Theoden King! Theoden King!
But Eomer said to them :
Mourn not overmuch! Mighty was fallen,
meet was his ending . When his mound is raised,
women then shall weep. War now calls to us
Yet he himself weptas he spoke .

Treebeard's song
In the willow-meads of Tasarinan I wolk in the spring
Ah the sight and the smell of the springs in Nan-Tasarion!
And i said that was good
I wandered in Summer in the elm-woods of
Ossiriand
Ah! the light and the music in the summer by the
Seven Sea of Ossir!
And i thought that was best
To the beeches of Neldoreth I came in the Autumn
Ah! the gold and the red and the sighting of leaves in the Autumn in Taur-na-neldor!
It was more than mt desire
To the pine-trees upon the highland of Dorthonion I
climb in the winter
Ah! the wind and the whiteness and the black
branchesof Winter upon Orod-na -Thon!
My Voice went up and sang in the sky
And now all those lie under the wave ,
And i walk in Ambarona,in Tauremorna, in
Aldalome
In my own land, country of Fangorn,
Where the roots are long,
And the years lie thicker then the leaves
In Tauremornalome.

The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
Np words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.
He named the nameless hills and dells;
He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadow of his head.
The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Sea have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.
A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone for ever fair and bright.
There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.
Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.
The world is grey, the mountains old
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls;
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dum.
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

By the command of Morgoth the Orcs with great labour gathered the bodies of all those who had fallen in the great battle, and all their harness and weapons, and piled them in a great mound in the midst of Anfauglith; and it was like a hill that could be seen from afar. Haudh-en-Ndengin, the Elves named it, the Hill of the Slain, and Haudh-en-Nirnaeth, the Hill of Tears. But grass came there and grew again long and green upon that hill, alone in all the desert that Morgoth made; and no creature of Morgoth trod thereafter upon the earth beneath which the swords of the Eldar and the Edain crumbled into rust.

Now let the song begin! Let us sing together
Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather,
Light on the budding leaf, dew on the feather,
Wind on the open hill, bells on the heather,
Reeds by the shady pool, lilies on the water:
Old Tom Bombadil and the River-daughter!
Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow;
Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow.
green were his girdle and his breeches all of leather;
he wore in his tall hat a swan-wing feather.
He lived up under Hill, where the Withywindle
ran from a grassy well down into the dingle.
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My darling!
Light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling.
Down along under Hill, shining in the sunlight,
Waiting on the doorstep for the cold starlight,
There my pretty lady is, River-woman's daughter,
Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than the water.
Old Tom Bombadil water-lilies bringing
Comes hopping home again. Can you hear him singing?
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! and merry-o,
Goldberry, Goldberry, merry yellow berry-o!
Poor old Willow-man, you tuck your roots away!
Tom's in a hurry now. Evening will follow day.
Tom's going home home again water-lilies bringing.
Hey! come derry dol! Can you hear me singing?
Hop along, my little friends, up the Withywindle!
Tom's going on ahead candles for to kindle.
Down west sinks the Sun: soon you will be groping.
When the night-shadows fall, then the door will open,
Out of the window-panes light will twinkle yellow.
Fear no alder black! Heed no hoary willow!
Fear neither root nor bough! Tom goes on before you.
Hey now! merry dol! We'll be waiting for you!

Where is the horse and the rider ? Wheers is the horn that was blowing ?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstrings , and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing ?
They have passed like rain on the mountain , like a wind in the meadow ;
The days have gone down in the west behind the hills into shadow,
Whos shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning ,
Or the flowing years from sea returning ?

wow..everyone is posting long passages in here...
my quote:
"Then i stood still, forgetting war in Middle-earth; for their wailing voices spoke to me of the sea. The Sea! Alas! I have not yet beheld it. But deep in the hearts of all my kindred lies the sea-longing, which it is perilous to stir. Alas! for the gulls. No peace shall I have again under beech or under elm."

Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more.

We come, we come with roll of drum: ta-runda runda runda rom!
We come, we come with horn and drum: ta-runa runa runa rom!
To Isengard! Though Isengard be ringed and barred with doors of stone;
Though Isengard be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone,
We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door;
For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars - we go to war!
To land of gloom with tramp of doom, with roll of drum, we come, we come;
To Isengard with doom we come!
With doom we come, with doom we come!
I LOVE this one!!

Are we the only ones playing here? :grin: O.K, here's my next quote-
'And then at last over the miles between there came a rumble, rising to a deafening crash and roar; the earth shook, the plain heaved and cracked, and Orodruin reeled. Fire belched from its riven summit. The skies burst into thunder seared by lightning. Down like lashing whips fell a torrent of black rain. And into the heart of the storm, with a cry that pierced all other sounds, tearing the clouds asunder, the Nazgul came, shooting like flaming bolts, as caught in the ruin of hill and sky they crackled, withered, and went out.':ring:

The rider was robed all in black, and black was his lofty helm, yet this was no Ringwraith but a living man.'

The Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dur he was, and his name is remembered in no tale; for he himself had forgetten it, and he said: 'I am the Mouth of Sauron.' But it is told that he was a renegade, who came of the race of those that are named the Black Numenoreans; for they established their dwellings in Middle Earth during the years of Sauron's domination, and they worshipped him, being enamoured of evil knowledge. And he entered the service of the dark tower when it first rose again, and because of his cunning he grew ever higher in the lord's favour; and he learned great soucery, and knew much of the mind of Sauron; and was more cruel than any orc.

Thrice he cried. Thrice the great ram boomed. And suddenly upon the last stroke the Gate of Gondor broke. As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder; there was a flash of searing lightning, and the doors tumbled in riven fragments to the ground.
In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. A great black shape against the fires beyond, he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the arch that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face. All save one. There waiting silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax, Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dinen.

A journey long before me lies.
Farewell friends, I hear the call,
The ship's beside the stony wall.
Foam is white and waves are grey;
beyond the sunset leads my way.
Foam is salt, the wind is free;
I hear the rising of the Sea.
Farewell, friends! The sails are set,
the wind is east, the moorings fret.
Shadows long before me lie,
beneath the ever-bending sky,
but islands lie behind the Sun
that I shall raise ere all is done;
lands there are to west of West,
where night is quiet and sleep is rest.
Guided by the Lonely Star,
beyond the utmost harbour-bar,
I'll find the heavens fair and free,
and beaches of the Starlit Sea.
Ship, my ship! I seek the West,
and fields and mountains ever blest.
Farewell to Middle-earth at last.

There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.
