View Full Version : If you were in one of the battles of Middle earth what would you have.

I would have light armour mainly chain mail with some chest and shoulder plates so I could move about quickly. Also a medium sized sword, and a bow an arrow and small dagger. I dont know if I would carry a shield it would proly be a good idea though it would help so maybe.

Well i have always admired brute force:grin: so i would proberly wear platemail with a metal helmet that protects my neck, and use a Bradsword and also carry a short sword and a pair of fighting knives:thumbs: no time to be shooting arrows

Definately a set of the Uruk-hai heavy armour - though without the 'fan' on the top of the helm. For weapons either a uruk-hai sword and shield or a good sized two hander - maybe a claymore or something along those lines.

Well if we are fantasizing, hmm. let's see, a Full Set of the Mithril Chain that Frodo had for starters and a nice hefty Axe (see Dramborleg) and the Dragon Helm would be nice too.

But to be just one of the nameless sword fodder... I think I'll have a Danish(Dwarvish)type Axe, Elven Banded Armor and a Helm from Rohan without the inconvienent handle of horse hair. A nice Elven longknife as a backup weapon too

Helmet, a mail coat, my trusty bastard sword (assuming that I'd be strong enough to wield it one-handed while I have a shield)!

I don't know about plate armour since I've never heard of plate armour in M.E.... ;) lol And a good, war-worthy horse (assuming, of course, I could ride, which I can't...). And maybe a long knife in case my poor sword by notched. :(

Hobbit
June 27th,2003, 10:58 PM
A helmet (one big enough to cover my neck) and a chainmailcoat. As weapons I would choose a warspear (one strong enough to stew armour, but light enough to be wielded one-handed by a normal man) I would also carry a good shield and I would also have a small sword (like a roman gladious) in case I'd loose my spear. And some knives I can throw at enemies.
If plate armour was known in Middle Earth (just like m'lady Ashley I've never heard of plate armour in Middle Earth) I would have an armourplate on my right upperhand and shoulder (to protect the arm I'd use to wield the spear a bit)

I'd have a mailcoat, a light but durable helmet to protect my head and gaunlets for my outfit. Nothing too bulky. While I'd have liked a bow, I'm sure I won't be able to utilize it well, cos' if I get excited or anxious, I won't be able to take aim well lol So 2 elven blades would do well. (One for back-up purposes)

well id have a good hefty axe to start with since im quite broad and strong, and id keep a a good bow (medium not to heavy or too small). also a good knife and a spear as well, i dont think id have heavy armour, unless maybe if i was goin into full battle in an open plain, id have leather armour with maybe metal gauntlets since my hands would get the most punishment(and maybe shin gaurds)id liek to rely on my speed rather then on armour

Knowing my own fighting style, I would have used arms straps similar to those Legolas used, and leather armour as the one seen when Aragorn asks to be given the sword by the Rohan boy 9the one with multy layers used by the boy), all of that over a chainmail., it would be obviously much better for mobility and still would protect from big weapons and arrows, I prefer mobility to totally heavy protection.
As for weapons, I would use a sword similar to the Two Handed chinese Gim for horse riding (but would modify the handle and would make it a bit lighter), two Dha blades (they wold look fairly similar to the elven infantry blade but with short handles and bit longer blades) for fighting in close quarters and a long knife, my bow (for obvious advantage), and a short barbed spear to carry on horse back, that gives me plenty of options for different ranges and situations:thumbs: hehe sounds like carrying an armoury on my back, but have really done it before and if you know how to balance what you carry, it becomes as part of your own body.

 I'm not sure what would be good for me since I'm very short like a hobbit. But I'd prefer Chainmail I think. A bow and arrows, several small swords and a big one, a horn like Boromir's for back up calling, helmet, a throwing axe or 3. Boots and long socks. Maybe a sheild. A horse to ride on.

I'm with Finrod Felagund, I'd have a full set of mithril chain too. But I'm with Nilion on the mobility factor. In addition, I would have a Lothlorien style bow and a full quiver of arrows, arm bracers, light boots, a darn fast and good horse to shoot my bow from, and a curved blade similar to hadhafang, but shorter. ;)

It appears that many of you think along the same lines as I do. I would wear chainmail for both protection and speed. Carry a Lothlorien Bow and a quiver packed full of arrows. For close combat I would have a hand and a half broadsword on my left hip and a long dagger on my right. Somebody had mentioned a horn like Boromir’s, which would be nice to have to sound warnings, startle the enemy, or call for help. A helm would also be nice to have, but I think it would get annoying wearing it all of the time and if carried until it was needed would get heavy after a while. With that said I would probably go without the helm.

Heavy leather gloves, bracers, and good boots would be a must as well as an Elven (Lothlorien) Cloak. Being hidden would be better armor than a full suit of platemail.

I don’t think I missed anything. Maybe a small boot dagger as a last ditch effort weapon and tool for cutting food and skinning wild game.

Mmm... a boot dagger would prove handy. I'll add that to my list too. ;) lol

I think an elven style armor would suit me....or maybe travel clothes like Boromir and Aragorn.

Also i would prefer to have a short sword like Boromirs, but no shield. I somehow feel very clumsy wearing a heavy shield.

For ranged weapons: Maybe a rebuildt crossbow, The Uruks crossbows where built so they could reload them quickly.....somehow.

NO helmet! I prefer free sight from limited sight.

Shortly: I prefer light armor, mobility, speed before heavy armor and weapons.

i was jus thinkin maybe a sling instead of bow, since you wud prob never run out of ammunition, plus its easy to store.

TrueSwordsman
October 5th,2004, 10:24 PM
A sling would work on un-armored foes, but wouldn't do much against armor. I guess if you were skilled enough to hit them in the eye or something. I am not sure what kind of range you would have with a sling either. I have never used one, so this is just conjecture. As far as an effective ranged medieval/middle-earth weapon you really can't beat a good elven bow.

Weapons: Ranger Bow + Quiver | Hand-and-a-Half Sword | Long Dagger | Few Throwing Axes/Knives

Armor: Mithril Chain Mail (short) | Buckler/Heater(for a major battle) | Leather Vambraces and Boots | Cloak

Got all ranges covered. I too feel cumbersome with a sheild, but its great in a fix. I, like most of you, like to stay light and quick-rely on agility rather than armor. I really hate helmets - most blows to the head will crush it any how, unless its a glancing blow, in which case you are going to be confused and disoriented.

October 12th,2004, 02:20 AM
Well I have been in a few battles ;) and I prefer a Noldorian weapon not used very much now..... double blades........not knives, they are really more like thinner swords, but because of thier length they require much more arm strength to weild that double *knives*

Never took to the bow myself, and I think that as far as the impact made by a single man, a well armored swordsman with a good arm would make a bigger dent in enemy forces that an archer.... but I suppose the sight of things changes considerably when we talk forces.... really though, archers are helpless without a front line of spears/swords.....a bow isnt something you charge with!!

As for armor, always bareheaded, mith mithril mail under a strong leather tunic, with metal-coated leather bound around my forearms for extra protection in close combat...if I was going at it with sword, it would be a goodly sized one that could double as a two handed in a pinch, but less heavy. Hidden dagger and throwing knives as well of course, and being an alchemist, a goodly supply of poisons and remedies.

I would love to have:

- light armour (need to move around)
- medium sword (not much upper body strength over here ;))
- very light bow with some arrows on back quiver or one strapped to leg (they're dead weight in hand to hand unless you pull out the bow and use it with as much efficiency as Gandalf and his staff)
- bracers to keep the long sleeves at bay
- thick boots (so i won't kill my foot on shards on the ground)
- a horse

This should have been mentioned first:
- a nice big fat fortress filled at max capacity with well abled soldiers ;)
- a few cannons at my disposal
- some nuclear weapons
- anti-orc spray (for the foul stench)
- insect/pest/orc/troll/mumakil all-in-one spray
- some machine guns
- a handful of dragons under my command

you get the point...

Personally, I'd use my favorite combo.

Chain mail (for movement), belt of daggers (Throwing), two fighting daggers, a sword, and a helmet.

Along with a gatling rifle. :P

Hope I'm not reviving this topic or anything.. I'm new here...

Goldor Urukbane
October 30th,2004, 05:06 AM
Well, fantasizing....... Mithril armor, then the style armor Aragorn wore at the Black Gates over it. Then main weapons would be a longsword and a long spear-staff, as a combo to beat people. Then I'd have a knife on my belt, and an axe, and then a bow and quiver of arrows strapped to my back.

All that stuff as lightweight as it can get, with sensible clothes. And a cape. I'm a sucker for capes. :p

Maybe you would look cool but you would also be slow as a slug. I belive that armor was really heavy. Not to mention his weapon,

Orc
January 6th,2005, 07:42 PM
Not really. As a rule of thumb, you wouldn't wear someting that either didn't protect you or slow you down. 50-70 lbs of gear seems to be a recuring historical norm. The Roman Legion kit was about 70 lbs, but they would have shed some gear before battle, so figure about 50lbs. Midevail knight's armor typically weighed about the same. My full combat load (affectionally known as 'full battle rattle') in Iraq weighed about 60 lbs. A big part of armour is weight distribution. If you throw 70lbs of armor in a rucksack, the weight is carried on your shoulders (and hips if you have a gook ruck). If that same armour is warn, the weight is distributed throughout the body, and it is easier to manage.

well i would definely have a coat of mithril rings, a elven bow, and some boot daggers. and probably a sword for hand to hand combat.

Walderomir
March 7th,2005, 05:59 AM
If I were to fight there then I would definately go with a chainmail shirt and coif. I would possibly wear something thick like a leather based armor on top of that. I would go with steel pauldrons and leather bracers to finish off my upper body. For my legs I might have light protection, maybe made of leather again. For weapons I would have a one handed sword, not too long and perfectly balanced but only for use as a secondary weapon. My main choice would be a medium sized axe, and a wooden shield. Now if I were to fight for Mordor or Isengard, the only thing different would be my choice of weapons ;)

March 28th,2005, 04:03 AM
A full suit of Gondorian armour with Mithril under. An Irish Hand and a half sword(Irish because they made their weopons fast and agile.),two throwing Spears straped across my back,(Always been better at throwing Javilans(Sp?)
than Archery,go figure.)If I was using my sword in one hand(Though most likely would use two.) I would have a Gondorian flag in the other to inspire my comrads. No horse, Foot-soldier all the way .And in the unlickly event that I lose my sword a Dagger.

JemFinch
March 28th,2005, 10:46 AM
Mithril (obviously..hehe...light as a feather, and you get the idea. ;) )
A sword, preferably really long, really light, and really sharp. (This is sad..I feel like the time when I mixed up harpoons and bayonets, and the guys in my class thought I was crazy. Good with some things, but not with weaponry. lol)
A horse
Bow and arrow

I was about to mix up bow and arrow reading your post. lol

I would like to have, hmm, a spear, mithril or if it is not in shop then a good chain mail, a lance and ofcourse a horse, nicely armoured...
:knight: so to speak.

Interesting thread...
I'm small but strong, so I would want my armour to leave me free to move quickly, and yet have enough protection, and weapons versatile enough to inflict major damage on whatever foe (except a balrog- :-/ I'd only be a soldier so I'd have no chance!).

So, I think a light chainmail hauberk, and over that a boiled-leather surcoat which falls to the calves, leather bracers on the arms, leather gloves, and thick leather boots reaching knee-high. Not sure if I'd be wanting a helmet- I guess it would depend what I'm fighting and what terrain. For weapons, a hand-and-a-half sword, so I may wield it one or two-handed, a round shield similar to Boromir's in the movie, with the added addition of a spiked boss in the middle so I can bash enemies with it. A composite bow and arrows, and for added measure, some daggers- in the belt, in the boot, in the bracers, and on my sword scabbard.

Well I don't like helms...so...I probably wouldn't wear one of those. A mithril shirt I would though. And I would have a bow, and a nice long sword...like that of Andruil. Now that's a nice sword. And I might even have....a horse to guide me a long my way...so I can kill more at once...that's always better...the sooner we get rid of evil...the better.

August 3rd,2005, 01:08 PM
I'm small, and quite strong myself, but when I fight I depend on speed - so my armour would have to be made from mithril - light yet strong - a longbow, probably Lothlorien, couple of boot knives and a short, light sword (I'm only small, so a one-handed sword for a normal person is a one-and-a-half-hand sword for me! lol!)

I would probaly like to have my trusty longsword and be wearing plate armour like Boromir's at the taking of Osgiliath. I find that running away is very humiliating and that it is a very good way to get your self killed either by orcs or
your commanding officer. If I saw one of my soldiers running away I would probaly knock him out or kill him.

Elfdaughter
August 18th,2005, 12:46 AM
Don't talk like that, you'll end up like the CO's in the first world war.

Running away is the best way to get yourself killed by a shot in the back, though. I'd much rather stand and fight.

Kazadum
August 18th,2005, 09:01 PM
I don't mean to offend anybody but I personally think that in most battles in Middle Earth against orcs and Balrogs and the like men tend to be quite nervous and when some bodystarts running many people will follow them and that is the end of your army and your life. Thus I think that one man running away is far more dangerous then 50 Berserkers. But if I were the commander I would probably do what Aragorn did and give them a chance to go home or do some deed that would not try there courage as much.

crazymonkey 4 frodo

Gotchya...now it makes sense. Well we can't help the foolish. Can we??? They put their own lives on the line...and...when we're all fighting for the rights and lives of everyone else...one person's foolish acts, to themselves, can only be a minor concern. Unfortunate, but the way it must be.

If I was in the last battle of middle earth, I would have a bow, sai, staff or fighting knives. They are my favourite weapons and they all would be handy in big battles.
