View Full Version : I must be the only man alive who disliked Andy Serkis' Gollum...

It sounded too Disney-ish, too Jar-Jar Binks like to me. He wasn't the creepy, pitiful character that he was meant to be. You want to hear a good Gollum? Peter Woodthorpe. He did Gollum in both Bakshi's movie, and in the BBC Drama. His portrayal of Smeagol was perfect: A deep voice, somewhat guttaral (sp?)
Does anybody agree with me?

I heard some of the versions you spoke of and, yes they were good, but Andy's was just as good. In fact, maybe he was even imitating Woodthorpe a little bit.
I thought Andy's voice and inflections were perfect.

the bashki one sucks. not even just the voice but the character in genreal, when watchign the baski ones i was "i cant wait till this little bastard dies" but in the PJ one i actually felt remorse for him, he made me sad. serkis did a wonderful job.

I must agree that Andy's vocal interpretation did have shades of the Donald Duck about it, but I think his overall characterisation was good, and captured the essence of Gollum pretty well. I don't know the other actor you're referring to, so I can't comment on that.

A CGI character will always (until technology takes over) have a slightly unreal aspect. However, I thought (IMHO) that Serkis' voice qualities, while surreal, fit the Gollum character perfectly. What amazed me is that in the early 70's, our high school did "The Hobbit" and the person who played Gollum had the same lisping, drawn out SSSSSS's and the raspy, wispy voice Serkis used. Maybe that's why I thought he was dead-on in his Gollum. (Had Andy been a 45+ woman, I may have thought it was OUR Gollum lol )

I've heard Peter Woodthorpe's Gollum on the BBC Drama and I have to say I thought it was stunning performance
But I liked Andy Serkis' Gollum as well - it took me a bit by suprise at first only having heard the one interpretaiton but I didn't dislike it.

I didn't dislike Serkis' interpretation of Gollum either. It was a fantastic performance.

Wow, your high school drama production did THE HOBBIT?

That's what got me into the books. (I had a major crush on Thorin in that play. lol ) Sadly, our Gandalf has since "fallen". I played an elf, a rather humourous notion after seeing Orlando Bloom as an elf. (I'm built more as a hobbit )

No. I think Andy Serkis did an excellent performance.

Think of Gollum in the movies as you read this:
...*SPOILER*..."Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don't know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum - as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face....... He was looking out of his pale lamp-like eyes for blind fish, which he grabbed with his long fingers as quick as thinking...... He hissed and spluttered and rocked himself backwards and forwards, and slapped his feet on the floor, and wriggled and squirmed....."-The Hobbit, JRR Tolkien.
Good job, Andy.

Reading this makes me think about how perfect the Gullum in the movie is and andy serkis's voice was just as I always thought Smeagols should sound like I thought serkis did a fantastic job.

The only thing I didn't like about him that i can remember off hand is the actual "Gollum" noise. It just wasn't how I imagined it...I always thought of more of a swollowing, gurgle type noise. I know there was a bit more, but Ican't think of it at the moment. Gimme 14 days and I'll let you know. ;)

I'm with you on that one Tirithel! I was suprised by the kinda coughing "gollum" that Serkis used. I didn't dislike it but it was not what I had imagined.
The rest of his (Serkis') work was wonderful IMHO.
(I always thought of Gollum as somewhat green skinned, but that's not Andy's fault. ;) )

Actually what creeped me out the most was that Gollum reminded me A LOT of this one freaky guy that I work with. Seriously, the facial features were identical. Eeeeeewwwww...*shudders*

i really like how andy did his portrayal of gollum. it didnt matter so much the voice (which, i agree, could have been deeper), but his passion for the character really brought it alive. i think he was an awesome choice.;)

I think I should do the Gollumthing!! Really, I can scare people with my creepy Gollum-voice. I think Andy Serkis can't act, he is overacting, like they say. I saw him on the MTV Movie awards where he was thanked everyone for his award (it was on a video) and suddenly Gollum showed up. I hate that part, because Andy can't act at all. I don't say he can't act in the movie, but on the MTV Movie awards he sucked. :o

I think the voice characterisations in PJ's, the BBC's and the cartoon versions were all excellent.
In answer to the charge that Andy Serkis can't act, my work colleague, who is not a Tolkien fan as such, thought that Gollum easily out performed Frodo in the acting stakes. Horses for courses I guess.

The voices in Bakshi's was terrible... to be honest.. Gollum sounded like an old Australien Royal Flying Doctor who suffer's from Hairloss.. I think Bakshi's movies were' a disgrace.. sorry to say.
The Gollum in PJ's film is awsome, the split personality the huge eyes the movement, you could hear when Smeagol was talking and when Gollum was talking.. Andy Serkis forever!

Well, he's not supposed to be a suave movie star, I don't think he expected people to latch onto HIM along with the character so much ...I think he did a fine job, he is just so different from gollum (thank goodness! lol ) in real life that perhaps it's kinda strange to see him in person, and we get kinda dissapointed...or maybe I'm just wierd!! lol (highly possible...;) )

I liked Andy's performance - I hated it when the audience laughed at his internal struggle >_< I think they may have made that seem a bit too comical...but in general it was great, and very convinving!

I've changed my mind about Serkis' Gollum. The more I watch it, the more I think he captures the essence of Gollum - the struggle between good and evil, the yearning to belong, the ravaging influence of the Ring. I was moved by his plight. My only criticism now, and it is a minor one, is that he hasn't got the 'gollum' right. The slick slimy swallowing noise that Tolkien describes adds something to the deviousness of the character, and I don't think the coughing noise that Serkis uses achieves that.

I agree with your colleague; at times I think that Dom Monaghjaoig (however you spell his last name- the guy that played Merry) should have gotten Frodo over Elijah Wood, and they should have had Bob Fosse do Legolas, heh heh heh...JK
Anywho, back to Gollum...since I saw the little trailer for ROTK, and the part where Sam is accusing Gollum of plotting to murder him and Frodo, and Frodo denies it, and Gollum gives Sam that little smile behind Frodo's back- arg! Chills!
Rock on Serkis!
PS- the MTV movie awards were the shiznit! ;)
