I know there is already "Elvish Phrases for Everyday Life", but this thread is for people to give me phrases to translate into Quenya. My friend Ohtarien and I love translating, but it's not as fun when you're stuck translating only your own phrases. So if you have anything for us to work on, please let us know.
Thanx in advance!

Linya :)

Here's one I'm working on for a friend:

"If you want him, come and claim him!"

It's not an easy one, with no words in Quenya for: "if", "want" or "claim"... That leaves: "you", "him" and "and" Good luck! :naughty:

Wonder what you make of it, so we can compare our versions, I can imagine they'll be quite different.

Like you said, there's no word for "if", so this is what I have so far:
__ merelyes, tulë ar netes. ("__ you want him, come and get him").

I guess you could say something like "It is that you want him...," (ta ná tana merelyes...), but other than that, I'm not sure.
You said that you were working on this too, what did you come up with?

Mánalinya

At the Parma Penyane Quettaron, they say that "if" could be "ai" (derived from "aiquen" which means "if anyone) which is very possible. However, "ai" is also the interjections "ah, alas" (and these are attested).
I'm not sure if you want to use this, but it's an idea.

Grima Wormtongue, your sentences are rather interesting, and a little challenging. I have a few so far, and will try to get the rest as soon as possible. Just so you know, a couple words in your sentences don't exist in Quenya (such as "at" and "mean"), so I will have to take a few liberties to change the wording, but I will try to do that as little as I can.

1) Et, yello aiquen maurë inyë: (Out, call if anybody needs me: )

2) Oa mentar nyarin tana lá sina menyënna (Away messages tell that I'm not in this place).

3) Mótala, san et an sucini. (Working, then out for drinks).

That's all for now.

How about...

'Imagination is more important than knowledge' and 'we become what we behold'?

Mánalinya
August 20th,2003, 09:14 PM
How's this?

1. "Imagination is placed high above/over knowledge."
"Nausë ná ortanë tára or handë."

2. "We are made like/as that which we behold."
"Elmë nar carnë ve tana ya cenelmë."

er...ok...got a couple of words that I'm rather desperate to translate....

'Boar', 'Battle', and another line - 'golden as dew drops run'

thanks!

Mánalinya
August 21st,2003, 10:01 PM
As far as I know, there is no word for "boar", nor is there "pig, hog, etc...".
There is no word for "battle" either, however "ohta" = "war".

As for the other phrase:
'laurëa ve rossë lipter nornoro' = "golden as dew drops run"

NOTE: 'nornoro' is the only word that means 'run', however, it's actual definition is "run on." I'm not entirely sure that this fits. Could you give me a broader context of how this phrase will be used? Like maybe the sentence that comes before it. Or maybe there's another word you'd like to use instead of "run".

Linya :)

Elfdaughter

sure! Here's the poem I'm working on;

Pale as dawning sun,
Golden as dew drops run,
Fine as spider’s thread,
From silver spinning red,
Green eyes like the spring,
A golden wedding ring,
Hair like flowing water,
Goldberry, River-daughter.

The second line is the one I'm stuck on.

Hey I just found this thread...pure genius! I was wondering if you could do one for me?
"Open war is upon you whether you would risk it or not."
If you have time, see what you can do...thanks so much!!

Mánalinya

Elfdaughter, the word "run" in your poem (which by the way is really pretty), is it used in the sense of the physical? or otherwise? If it is the physical sense, then the sentence I previously gave you would be the best.
However, I'm not quite sure if it was the physical sense you meant, as dew drops don't usually "run".
Could it [perhpas] mean "golden as dew drops ?are?"?
(In which case the translation would be 'laurëa ve rossë lipter nar.' ).
Anyway, just a thought. Let me know. :)

Mánalinya
August 23rd,2003, 05:39 AM
Elessar,
How's this?

Latya ohta ná elyenna, ai merelyë ta var lá.
"Open war is upon you, if you wish it or not."

There is no word for "whether", "would", or "risk", so this is the closest I could get. Hope it helps.

"The light is gone and I am left in utter darkness"

:D it would be much appreciated. btw. i think this is a great and helpful idea.

Mánalinya
August 30th,2003, 10:16 AM
Elvenrocker, how's this?

"I cala ná vanwa ar erinyë mi analta mornië."
"The light is gone and I remain in greatest darkness."

Elfdaughter
August 30th,2003, 10:25 PM
Manalinya...thanks! That second line is the better one...fits better as well...thanks!

how bout this.

May God stand between yuo and harm, in all the empty places you may walk.

Aerandir,

Nai Eru marë imbelyë ar umëa, ilya lusta menesser vantelyë.
("May God abide between you and evil, in all the empty places you walk.")

There is no word for "harm/hurt". If you don't think "evil" works well, you can substitue "umëa" for "angayassë" ("misery"), or maybe even "mandë" ("doom"). Anyway, I hope it helps you.

Okay, just thought to ask this here.

How 'bout "No Fear" ?

Thanks a bunch! I'm also looking for a way to write it in the Tengwar, unfortunately I have no clue where to start. Any suggestions?

Mánalinya
September 8th,2003, 03:34 PM
No Fear = "Lá Caurë."

As for Tengwar, a good site that I know of is http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/4948/tengwar/.
Check out the back of Return of the King, in appendix E. If you have any questions, feel free to pm me. I'd be more than happy to help. Good luck, and have fun!

Is it just me, or do other people's computers not go onto geocities sites? It just goes blank and it's very annoying! And if it doesn't go blank it just goes into code.

Mánalinya
September 8th,2003, 07:11 PM
If you can't go to the previous site, another really good one is
http://www.skymind.com/~ocrow/tengwar/teng.html.

Thanks a ton, Mana! Though I'm a bit cornfuzzled as to which symbols for the u and the final e to use, or if they should appear only as accents over the previous letters. Thanks so much for your help!

Oh, and erm, indulge me: is La Caure Quenya or Sindarin?

Mánalinya
September 11th,2003, 03:55 AM
Tirithel,
I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, as far as the "u" is concerned. As for the final "e", use the short one over a short-vowel carrier.

P.S. "Lá caurë" is Quenya. I don't know Sindarin yet.

Can someone translate: What does not kill you, only makes you stronger?

Ohtarien
October 9th,2003, 01:31 AM
I know that Manalinya will definitely want a chance to translate this for you - just give her a while to get online and get back to you, Ash Nagz.
Manalinya, if you are too busy, I could do this for you - but as it's so short, I'm sure that you'll jump at the chance to do more translations! ;)

Mánalinya

Ash Nazg,
Thanks to a little help from Ohtarien, this is what I got:

Man umë antalyen qualmë, carilyë polda.
("What does not give death to you, makes you strong.")

Can I get this translated? I need it as a name really....

What would 'the last city of the Elves' be?

Mánalinya
October 24th,2003, 05:12 PM
Elfdaughter, thanks so some help from Ohtarien, here are a few options:
1) Ostoteldar
2) Teldaminassë
3) Minasseteldar

They all mean "the last city of the Elves", so you can pick the one you like best.
