View Full Version : What do you play?

Do any of you guys play a musical instrument? Do you play in a band? What kind of music do you play?
I play the African Drums and I play with a band called ‘Djabot’ which means ‘family’.
As there is no written music all the rhythms and songs have to be memorised. Performances can be quite nerve-wracking as you suddenly realise that you have absolutely no clue how the song is supposed to begin or what the ‘break’ in the middle is and so have to quickly ask the person sitting next to you what it is.
Our band-leader is a master-drummer from Senegal, and he is amazing. In performances though he only plays the drum for a bit to start us off, and then he starts playing with the percussion, the cow-bells, shakers and things. He then he comes back to bring us into the middle part ‘the break’ we get through that, then as soon as we start the main rhythm he goes back to his percussion again. Now how fair is that?
I’ve been playing for about three years now, and I enjoy it very much. There is nothing like a good bash on a drum to get all that pent-up aggression and stress out of one’s system, and better still it sounds really great.
So, what do you play?

I play the viola in our school orchestra... which has some extremely talented violinists in which one of them won the state championship! I also play piano... I never took lessons... I taught myself...

I don't play anything... besides my computer! :)
(no joke, I compose music on my comp, then use my soundcard's synth to "record" it)
Oh yeah, and I sing tenor in a few choirs. People tell me I have a really good voice, though I've had all of one voice lesson in my life...

Any excuse to go on trips eh! Whereabouts do you visit? What type of music does the band play, do you play clasical or other types?
I could never get the hang of the piano A! Elbereth, too many keys and too many notes, I never knew whee to start. the African drum is nice and easy there's only eight notes to learn.
I love the sound of the viola and violin. One of your violinists won the state championships! Wow!
I had three friends who played in the Worlds Largest Orchestra. Two on Clarinet and one on the Saxophone.
Orkybash, you compose music on the computer, that's cool. My brother does something similar.
What kind of music do you create. I don't know much about that kind of thing.

Well, my sig would be one example. :)
But I do a lot of different styles besides orchestral, plus I'm into remixing game music (like on Overclocked Remix (http://remix.overclocked.org) , if you've heard of it).

etc etc etc indeed! You name it...she's played it! :)
I play clarinet...Grade 5 i did last term...though i don't practise NEARLY as enough as i maybe should.......lol.....
I really like it cos i can play in concert band (like...an orchestra without the strings...) and ALSO the pheonix youth orchestra (where there are some pretty nice cello players)....:boohoo:..:smooch:...(not a cello i know, but close enough!)
I also sing...and i probably enjoy that more and am better at it than clarinet. I haven't taken a singing lesson in my life and that's somehting i'm more proud of than regret.  :p
I sing in Senior choir at school (both bonos-girl and i auditioned and got in! veryhappy) and i want to join a choir out of school but i have to find one i can get to first... :( ;)

Yeah well we go on some pretty cool trips. This year we are going to New York. We will see some broadway shows and tour the city. We also always go to six flags and we do lots of other fun trips. next year we are even going to Virginia. The kind of music we play is all types. Right down we are playing a mix of clasical and others. we are playing a march and two realy cool songs. one is called mars. We also play christmas and other fun songs like the muppets or the beatles or anyother theme songs fro our spring concert.roflmao

Yeah, when I was in something like 3rd grade my entire class had to learn how to play the recorder, then we cave a "concert" for our parents. It sucked muchly. lol

I think at sometime in their lives... everyone has played the recorder! lol

October 5th,2002, 06:40 AM
Didja all have to REMIND me of that????? Fancied myself quite an artiste on the recorder, but hey, I was only about 10 years old at the time....funny thing is, I know my parents bought me that thing, but somewhere along the way, I've lost it....wonder if I could still play???
Aside from that, the only thing I miss about living at home (for the most part) is my mom's baby grand piano...she took lessons for years, but she says that I play better than she does, improper fingering and all....I composed a tune based on the chord changes of "Greensleeves" and she used to love to listen to me play it....if I happen to get near a piano in a music store, I try to play it, but it's hard to remember when you're out of practice.
Pil
October 5th,2002, 12:52 PM
We had to do that sort of greensleeves thing in school...the art is not dying arien!
Unfortunately...my piano playing is pretty dire... lol

Ahhh, yes....That wasn't the most succesful thing I've ever done in my life. I only joined the recorder club at primary school to get out of going to assembly on Wednesday mornings. I was never very good at it. I kept squeeking.
I was much better at singing and joined the Choral Group instead.
Until the teacher taking that left and we had another one whom I didn't like. Then I joined the Nature Club, but THAT is another story.
I also had a Mouth-organ at one time and a harmonica - well that was actually my brother's and I stole it, hehe, wasn't he mad!
We aslo had one of those Keyboards which we were suposed to share....yea right!!!
We were actually quite generous with the keyboard.
I had one of those little puppet theater things, and my brother would put on shows for me complete with sound effects and music.
Ahhh! Those were the days!

its actually kinda embarssing telling people you play the recorder coz they think you must be really weird to have carried on with the recorder!! I actually really ilke the recorder and think it can sound quite beautiful if played by a good musician....yep..weird..i know!!

Well I didn't like it because I couldn't play it very well. But I do think it sounds great when played properly.

:) I used to play the Alto Sax, but haven't since High School. Which I'm saddened to say has been almost 8 years. I played it for 5 years, starting in the 8th grade and up until I graduated. I was in the Marching band a everything. I enjoyed it, but there so expencive my parents couldn't afford to buy me one of my own, and I can't afford one now. Plus I think they would have taken it back after I played it at home one too many times. There really loud.
Playing it gave me alot of fun times thou. The band got to go to Disneyland and play in a Parade. Teenagers with 2 whole days with very little adult supervision at Disneyland. Fun, fun, fun, fun.
As I sit here and think about it, I probably couldn't play anymore. Then again I do like to think of as riding a bike. Once you know how you never forget. So maybe I still could.

Actually, one of the choirs I sing in has a recorder player as an instrumentalist... she's *very* good, and adds a lot to the music with it.
I love the sound of the instrument... it's a shame that so many people have the "incompetent 2nd grader" image burned into their head!

I play my vocal cords!! I always wanted to play an instrument but I was blessed with a more then decent vocal ability and can sing 4 octaves. I was asked to sing in a band once, but the guy was hot and I was too chicken to call him back!! So I missed out..but it was called Suicidal Pickles!! So I don't feel too bad about it....roflmao

Used to play a marching flute in the school band, and later I tried to learn myself how to play the sax. Unfortunatly I was given an instrument that had been in several accidents, like falling down some stairs, and having a chair dropped on it. It had a bad habit of popping all its vents, so I gave it up! The marching band was great fun, made a lot of good friends, went on fun trips and develloped my musical flavours in a totally different way than what I would have if I hadn't joined it. Hated the uniforms, though!

I'm a drummer. I've played in a number of bands I don't even know the name off. One other band was Quinten. Bit of blues jazz style with some progy influences. Right now I'm not in a band. Wish I was though! My drum style ranges from Dream Theater to Metallica and back again. But Mike Portnoy is my favorite drummer. I could have been in music school to if I had the right education. I'm not really fast, but i'm very technical! That's about it.

Let's see... I used to play piano, but no longer. My mother's a piano teacher, and father's a composer. Very musical! :) My best instrument is guitar, from classic to electric. I used to play flute, but forgot most of it. I also played recorder and trumpet. Trumpet is tiring! I am in a band which hasn't decided on its name. :( And I kinda sing, too. Oh, and I shouldn't forget synthesizer. That's it for now. :whoohoo:
Bonos-Girl
December 25th,2002, 06:39 PM
i love playing around with synthesisers...you can make all kindsa really cool sounds and do sampling an stuff.....
i'm really pleased cos for my big christmas present from 'santa' (ie my parents!) i got a smaller bass amp so now i can actually do stuff with it!!! my other one is so heavy that i couldn't take it anywhere!!!

GUITAR!!! I have a J Reynolds, and I want a Les Paul so badly.:( All the guys think i'm pretty cool, cuz like when we have recitals, all the girls just want to quit it or something. They never want to play for an audience. I like to though, the only prob is that i'm playing with a bunch of guys. At first they underestimated me, which was unfair, but now, they think i'm preety cool, so it's all good.

I used to be very talented music wise, but I threw a lot of it away after I quit school because my music teacher wasnt the nicest person in the world to me

some can be evil but some can be really nice. I was lucky, I always had nice teachers. :)
That is a lot of instruments, Icey! lol
I start singing lessons tomorrow! :whoohoo:

i play the flute and piano.....but i'm not that good on either(i lack practice). actually, my parents forced me to play the piano. its such a drag(in my opinion). i'd love to play the violin though. its been my dream instrument before i even chose to play the flute, but i couldn't find a teacher. now...i dunno if i hab time for lessons!:(

i also play the flute, (and love it! The flute is such a beautiful instrument! ). i'm in my 5th year of learning it and am about to take my 5th grade exam in about 4 weeks...i think i still need a touch more practice first though. ;)
i've played with several school bands over the last few years and have been a part of my school's senior band for about 2 years now. i love the music heaps!
i intend to learn piano when i get a chance (i'm part way through my final years at school, so study is kind of a priority right now). To anyone who can sing, you have my highest respect and i envy you! i'm not particularly gifted that way, but i absolutely love hearing people sing...even people who NEVER STOP singing, and drive everyone else insane!

thanks heaps! i might need the good luck. ..nah, i think i might do alright on this one, i know my technical work and have done a lot more practising than i used to - so i'm sure i'll be fine.
You must be really good, doing eighth grade! Well done! ;) i'll get there too eventually... :)

November 7th,2003, 08:47 AM
well today i did my exam...it didn't go too badly, so that's definitely good, but i did have a couple of slip ups, but examiners usually put that down to nerves, so hopefully i'll get a good mark. i should find out in about 4 days i think.
is there actually an age limit on doing 8th grade, or do the examiners just mark you harshly if you're too young?
i'll post my mark once i get it.

November 7th,2003, 07:21 PM
well done Heidi!
and i didn;t know there was an age limit....if there is...lol
Ceri Bloom
November 7th,2003, 10:35 PM
wicked Heidi well done...lol
there isn't an age limit, they just mark you harshly because they think you don't have the experience to cope with that standard of music :(
BL i reckon that counts ;)
Bonos-Girl
November 8th,2003, 12:34 AM
i never knew they marked more harshly....oh well...that sucks...

Well, i got my exam mark back today - B+

i play drums too.....my brother has a drum kit...but he's the worst teacher ever so i ended up teaching myself with a couple of "teach yourself drums" books ;) lol
Ronin
November 14th,2003, 01:04 AM
lol...beautiful, i so want to learn how play the drums....just for pure annoyance's sake ;)
Ice Dragoness
November 14th,2003, 03:47 AM
I want a proper drum kit, I dont think i can fit it anywhere in my room though....the keyboard already takes up too much room!
Bonos-Girl
November 14th,2003, 06:55 PM
lol...yeah....i wouldn;t be able to fit the drums in my room...my brother has a bigger room than me..he's two eyeasr younger and goes to boarding school.....so unfair...lol
and yes...i play drums purely to annoy people.....especially effective around 6.30am ;) lol
Ronin
November 14th,2003, 08:01 PM
lol....much more effective than that...a chainsaw ripping through wood at 5 am....perfect alarm clock ;)
Bonos-Girl
November 14th,2003, 08:04 PM
well...yeah....but i have no chainsaw nor wish to cut down trees every morning ;)
Ronin
November 14th,2003, 08:15 PM
lol....hmmmm...i guess we could settle down on the amplified drum set then ;)

November 14th,2003, 10:33 PM

November 14th,2003, 11:08 PM

Heidi
November 16th,2003, 09:58 AM
haha. a piccolo wake up call does sound tempting ...it's a pity i don't yet play piccolo!
i want to though, and i agree they' make a very beautiful sound!
If i ever get the chance to play piccolo, i must remember to test it's suitability as an alarm clock on my brother, i think!
Ceri Bloom
November 16th,2003, 12:40 PM
hahaha yes do! its a great way to take revenge........and playing in a band with 2 piccolos is hell though  it is impossible to tune them!! roflmao i should know ;)
when do you think you'll get a piccolo Heidi?
Heidi
November 17th,2003, 11:13 AM
hmmm, i can imagine the tuning problem very vividly!! If it's anything like our band at school, then the entire baseline section would be shuddering and the clarinets and oboes cringing (as they sit closest to us flutes and piccolos). Ear - piercing is the best way to describe it i think!
I hope to get a piccolo as soon as possible, which means "as soon as i can afford it" but unfortunately that will be in a fair while, seeing as i don't have a job and are in my crucial years of school and so need to be studying instead of working...
but once i finish school, and get a job - i hope to get a piccolo. And really that's not too far away, about two years ... which is kind of scarey - 'cause then i have to work out what on earth to do with my life! ;) haha, that could be interesting!
Ceri Bloom
November 17th,2003, 07:45 PM
aahh yeah you hit the nail on the head Heidi!! thats exactly what its like!! except the trumpets cant hear us unless we're sort of playing really loudly, and we stop most of the clarinets from playing!! roflmao and we even stop ourselves!! roflmao its so funny at band, we have a ball ;)

I play the Electric and Acoustic guitar (self-taught), the piano (self-taught, no chords though), and clarinet (I started playing it last year in seventh grade) the seventh graders last year rocked... course we had a teacher that everyone respected... and this year we have a teacher so no one listens to him... tongue
