View Full Version : When did you become a fan......

We all are fans of Elijah, Orlando, Viggo (sigh) and John R.D. (I know you're out there, Gimli fans). When in the film did you really "connect" with your fave? Mine is Viggo, and the moment is during the fight with the Cave Troll, as Aragorn goes to Frodo's aid with almost dancer like agility. When was your "aha" moment??

Hello IMD, good thread ...yes, you already know who's my fav ;) (Viggo, viggo, viggo...ahhh... ) I guess during the entire Fotr movie aragorn was growing on me...first the "Are you frightened?...Not nearly enough" was cool, then "Ride hard, don't look back", then the end scene with Frodo and refusing the ring (Awwwhhh...he's so noble!!! :stomper: ), but the real clincher that sealed the deal was "Let's hunt some ORC!" :whoohoo: I love that line! It's so adventurous and daring and gets you saying, "Yeah!! LET'S go hunt some orc!!! Go ARAGORN!!!" :aragorn:

I didn't really have an "aha" moment. I liked Cate Blanchett before I saw her in FotR. As soon as I saw her, I knew she was a good Galadriel. By the time the film was over, I decided she was the perfect Galadriel.

Well,I loved Sean Bean years before LOTR,and I've never heard of the book before, but when I saw him in the teaser trailer I knew I'm gonna see this movie....

This will be boring I'm sure, but I don't think I really have a special favorite. Well, maybe Sean Astin leads the pack by a slight margin, then Elijah follows.
Most of the people in the movie I did not know before it came out except for Ian M., Chris lee, Liv, and Elijah.
Although, I had seen the movie 'A Walk on the Moon' and thought Viggo's character to be exceptionally attractive, I didn't relate him to Aragorn until seeing it again afterwards.
Of the ones I DID know, they came to my attention thusly:
Ian McKellan - Richard III
Chris Lee - The Hound of the Baskervilles
Elijah Wood - North (He became indelibly impressed on my mind here, so I watched out for all his future endeavors.)
Liv Tyler - Not that I'm a big fan of hers, but she impressed me in Stealing Beauty.
For Sean Astin, I think LOTR will be his star making role.

Aragorn. The moment I truly connected with him was during Boromir's death. The scene itself was reminiscent of the brotherhood of soldiers during war, especially when he said, "Be at peace, son of Gondor."

Maybe as Sindarin said, I should have named this When did you CONNECT with a character. Thanks, Sin. As I've said, mine is with the cave troll....I must have watched that particular piece over and over so many times! That's when Aragorn came alive. I liked him in Bree, and fighting on Weathertop, but that part of Balin's Tomb....wow

My connection moment was at the council, when Boromir said: "If this is indeed the will of the Council,Gondor will see it done". He maid it very clear that even if he doesn't agree with the desicion,he will go and help.....:boromir: :loveyou:

I knew it when the Fellowship was walking over Caradhas or however you spell it and I saw Orlando Bloom(Legolas) walking over the snow so gracefully and lightly, and peering around in the snow with his elven eyes...that he was a great actor....I mean, come on, its kinda tough to act like an elf!! But he did it beautifully.
Also, Viggo was just a great actor period...he perfectly fit his role...along with Wood, Blanchet, Holmes, and Lee...and pretty much everyone else but those were the really good people

I think I connected with Boromir the most during his death scene when he called Aragorn his captain and King...

As an elf, it goes against the grain here for me, but I would have to say that I could buy Sean Bean as Boromir from the start. A man torn by the love of his realm and his Father. Also a man who feared to die in dishonour and so tried and died and pledged his allegiance to the True Crown of Gondor at his death. A very touching moment in the movie.

I agree with everyone who's mentioned some very nice Boromir moments... if I had to choose a time I fell for Boromir, it would be about the 20th viewing (after I got over legolas, of course  ), during the Council of Elrond... I remember loving the strength and will behind his words and actions... he had no idea, for the most part, what was going on, but still managed to defend his people and ideals with a reasonable amount of intelligence... and his line "Gondor has no king" etc, is brilliant the way Sean B says it. Every time I watch it, I fall in love with him all over again...

Good question!!
I'm primarily a Viggo fan - the 'Not nearly frightened enough' exchange piqued my interest, but what really sealed the deal was the fight on Weathertop, with the sword and torch.
I also developed a bit of an Elijah crush (which I'm a little embarassed to admit, since I feel like a dirty old woman crushing on someone at least 10 years my junior! ), but it didn't arise till watching the extended features on the DVD....they're showing some of the photos Viggo took during shooting, and there's one of Elijah all in black, on his knees in the rain or snow - what can I say, it appealed to my inner Goth.... :naughty:

I also LOVE when Aragorn comes leaping in on the Weathertop scene :loveyou:...but I was thinking, and when I REALLY began to connect with him was when he sends Arwen off to take frodo to Rivendell, and Sam asks him what the heck is he doing, and he has this GREAT look on his face like "Oh s*** what AM I doing!! I like that scene, too. I also shows the great respect that Aragorn has for Arwen. He is trusting her with the future of the world (Frodo and the ring), but he is hesitant to put her in danger. Nice scene. :rose:

As SAm asks "What are you doing?" I saw in Aragorn's eyes "I know they're out there, and I'm as scared for them as you are" It's a beautiful moment of acting, and we get immediately how much Arwen means to Aragorn (lucky her)

Oooh, I agree MoM and SF...the look on Viggo's face is worth a thousand words. I think that was my connection point.

Hobbits are cool and cute , but for some reason I can't get over the height thing ;)...it BOTHERS me that they're so short! lol
I think i have found the quote that has sealed the deal permanetly for my obsession with aragorn ...I don't think I shall ever become un-obsessed now that I have seen it...its in the "preview of a preview" for Rotk where aragorn says, "He has gone unchallenged long enough" :whoohoo: I just love it, it gives me shivers all over and I almost fell out of my chair when I first saw it lol :loveyou:...it also is a nice contrast to the beginning of FOtr where he really doesn't want to be king, but now he realizes that it's time, and he's gonna chase his destiny for all it's worth (and kick some Saruman booty in the process :battle: ;) )...god I love him! :loveyou: :aragorn:

I connected with Sean Bean's portrayal of Boromir the moment he 'came to' after attempting to take the Ring from Frodo and the awful realization of what he had done descended upon him. The look of anguish and bitter regret on his face really made me believe in the character and sympathize with his plight. It was a wonderful piece of acting.

I'm 100% with you on that one. There were two other big moments in the movie for me. One was after the fall of Gandalf, when they emerge onto the Dimrill Dale, and are overcome by grief. Pippin sobbing on the ground and Merry helplessly holding him, and the look on Frodo's face of complete devastation were very powerful. The second one is the end of FOTR, with Sam & Frodo in the boat. Sean Astin did a wonderful job in that scene, the love and loyalty he portrays without getting sappy (IMO) were very touching.

"the Adventures of Huck Finn" wow is he a cutie in that. but then as i watched FOTR for the next 7 or so times in the theater, i began to go for Boromir............haha................what happened? i dunno, but now I honastly couldn't pic a favorite character. Viggo is definitely my favorite. The first time I saw the movie I wasn't overly thrilled with the whole thing, but Aragorn still attracted me:love: . When you first meet him, and the hobbits are wondering who he is, then he grabs Frodo and drags him into the room, I got this frightened thrill. Then it becomes clear he is good, and I felt this profound relief. He was this hunky, mysterious, thrilling character. Then I read the books and watched the movie again, and I realized I liked Aragorn so much better in the movie, and my obsession started. Now the slightest mention of Viggo or Aragorn makes me snap to attention.... sigh..... VIGGO  :loveyou:

Well, Frodo is my favorite character, but that love story is boring, 'cause it took one look into those blue eyes and I was gone. ;)
Sooo, I'll tell about Merry, 'cause I loved him in the book as well. When I first saw pictures of him I thought he looked awful and ugly and un-Merryish, blah, blah, blah. So I went into the movie with extremely disppointed and low expectations. But then, in his first scene stealing the firecrackers, I started to rethink. Then he took that last bite into his apple and ducked under the tent, and he was so perfectly how I picture Merry, and . . . well, the rest is history. :p :merry: :loveyou:

Oh yeah, I was in love with the book Frodo long before Elijah Wood was anybody in my mind. lol I just thought we were talking about when in the movie we decided we liked certain characters. I love the book Frodo even more than the movie Frodo. Movie Frodo, imo, wasn't quite perfect --- a little too much focus on the Ring's power over him, or something. But, despite all that, those big, blue eyes had me dead in a second, so what can I say? ;)
the books reinforce the love i have for my two favorite hobbitses That's so true! Absolutely. I think it does that for all the characters. Seeing the movie helped me to understand certain sides of the characters I hadn't seen before. It really just added depth to my experience of Middle-earth.

I first became a fan in 1974 when I read the Hobbit. Immediately I connected with Bilbo and decided I was Hobbit at heart and imagined him as a good buddy. Hobbits really are amazing creatures...! lol Then when I was in my early twenties I read LotR and fell in love with Frodo. Frodo was so much like Bilbo in his adventurous ways and I have always loved that character in a cute puppy dog way. I was disappointed in the ending of the book, cos I so wanted Frodo to find someone like Rosie and live happily ever after. :(
I love the way Elijah portrayed Frodo, but when I see Elijah, I can't see Frodo. It's hard for me to believe that is the actor that played him. Just goes to show how talented the boy is. All he has to do is don a wig and he's somebody completely different. Also, Elijah is the same age as my son and I see him more in a Motherly way, wanting to correct him and lecture him about being more like Frodo. lol

Has anyone seen the VH1 series TOTALLY OBSESSED? There was a lady on the show who treated her cardboard cutouts like they were real people. Hmm. I didn't see the VH1 special with the crazed woman who took her Gollum stand up to dinner. Was it a one sided argument, or did she argue back with herself doing Gollum's voice? And how did she forget that Gollum dislikes cooked food (at least fish, rabbit and nasty chips?) Or were they in a sushi bar? :chef: But seriously, her family actually went along with her on this? How did the other people in the restaurant react?

She had two stand up, life sized pictures! One of Gollum, the other of Smeagol. She was imitating them arguing with each other over fish (can't remember her exact words). Her family was just laughing and the poor waitress (or waiter, can't remember) was just standing there in embarrassed shock. The other patrons were staring and laughing.
I'm with you Moraneah. It's not real! It's just a story that we all happen to love!

Wow. Maybe her whole family needs some help. I'm surprised that they didn't ask them to leave, or maybe they figured it was Candid Camera (or whatever) or something. Pretty sad, really. :( Imagination is the spice of life, but that's too extreme.

Wow! Indeed!! This is really extreme! I mean, we are all fans of the story and the films and I bet quite a few of us have a lot of LotR stuff at home-I know I do...much to the dismay of my mom lol -but this is too much!!There is such a thing as too much imagination...and it's not a good thing!

I became an offical fan of LOTR just before ROTK came out in the cinemas. FOTR was showing on the Sky movie channels, I was bored, so i started watching it, got hooked, watched TTT and now have lost count with how many time i have seen the films and read the books! My mum and dad tried to persuade me to watch FOTR and TTT at the pictures, but i wasn't at all interested. Now I only wish I could have watched them at the Cinema :(

Most of them with LOTR, but I knew who Elijah was long before. I was a fan of Cate's after I saw Elizabeth and a fan of Liv's after Armageddon, and I saw Chris Lee in Star Wars.

 When did I become a fan? I have been a fan of LOTR since 1986 when I first read the books. The films made an even bigger fan. I am at least a sane fan. Has anyone seen the VH1 series TOTALLY OBSESSED? There was a lady on the show who treated her cardboard cutouts like they were real people. I mean this woman took her Gollum/Smeagol cutout to a restaurant with her and was even arguing with them. Don't you think that she needs to be committed? lol
That's freaky. Makes me look really normal!

hmmm...i started to connect with legolas during the council of elrond...probably when everyone else did because he was just plain hot!. but i really connected with faramir in return of the king-i realized how much his father neglected him...i felt so bad for him. even in TTT-i thought he had a troubled past...but my favorites are merry and pippin-when they were separated-they had to be 2gether!!i was so upset...I LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS!!!!

For me it started when I saw Fellowship. I leterlly slobber all over the place..lol..just kidding, but I was hooked. It was a go from then, books, collectables, dolls, ect. First time I was Legolas I caught my self sucking in my breath hard, cause he was so cute and I have a thing for blonds. Heehee! The sets, places, the effects floored me.

I became a fan after I saw FOTR in theatres!! I was literally stunned by the excellence and beauty of the movie(not to sound all mushy). Those words aren't even worthy enough to describe how I feel about the story! But ya from then on it's been nonstop lord of the rings craziness! ;)

well i first saw a pic of Strider on a sort of collectors card that came with the FOTR soundtrack cd...i was buyin it cos i knew Enya sang there and i love her singing then i saw there were different ppl on each cd available at the shop and i thought this guy looked simply awesome so i bought that one.then i went to see the film without the slightest idea of whom this Strider was but when he showed up in Bree i knew i was hooked...even tho it was only after the scene bridge in Rivendell that i really fell in love with the character Aragorn cos...well...a guy who says "i thought i had strayed into a dream"...how not love him?!and such a noble and brave man too...:loveyou:
this as far as Aragorn is concerned...while for Viggo...its a different story!lol
the first pic of him as non-Aragorn i saw i thought Wait a minute!Who is this man?!no way he can be the same who played Aragorn (wot a fool i was!)...so that was the end of it apparently...one day i accidentally found some of his poems online and after havin read "hillside" i ws completely lost!then i read interviews and everythin i could find about him and now im a complete Viggobsessed !!and of course to me he is the most handsome man on earth...and Middle Earth too ;)

My first moment as a true fan was in the first 2 minutes of FOTR. ;) I knew I was hooked, and the movie just kept getting better and better. And my first moment as an Aragorn-obsesser? As soon as he lifted off his hood in Bree, I loved him.  Even though I wasn't yet sure if he was good or not, having not read the books. (I got into them the next day! I had originally bought the Trilogy as a present for my dad, but after a while they just kinda ended up in my room, where they still are today! veryhappy :stomper: :loveyou: )

I first became a fan on a Friday night when my Cousin,Uncle and I were looking for a movie at a movie rental place.(This was a month after TTT came out on video.)We couldnt find anything and my Uncle who had seen it said."Hey lets get this its a good movie..".I was hesitant because
I hadnt taken an intrest in LOTR yet.We went back to my house and sat down to watch it.The minute I saw Legolas board down the stairs I was hooked.(Im more of a fan of Viggo, but you gota admit that was one of the best scenes in the movie.)Of course I didnt understand half of it until I Watched FOTR hehe.

A friend of mine once borrowed me a cd with FotR (yes, I've never seen in the cinema) and I became interested enough to buy a ticket for TTT. I was astonished with TTT, and I decided to read the books before RotK is released. Only after finishing the books I became THE fan (of both the movies and literature). RotK made me buy all the extended edition DVDs. When I count it now, I've been a Tolkien fan for, let's say, 2 years.

I read it in *cough* 1972, after our high school class did "The Hobbit" and I was intrigued. After that, NOTHING could stop me from reading and rereading those books. I hesitated seeing FOTR coz I KNEW nothing could match up to my expectations. Finally, I saw them, and my worst fears were appeased! I've loved these films since I finally broke down and saw them.

Oh, cool, the 70's are great!
My grandafther showed me a poster of FotR about a year before it was released and he was really looking forward to seeing it. When it finally came, he fought it was lame. I don't know what he was expecting, when he didn't even read the book before. Now we argue that it's good, 'cause he thinks it's only for children. Well, he just doesn't want to accept the fact that it's adults that love it the most, beacuse they were waiting to see it since the 70's...

Initially I didn't have an interest in any of the characters other than just reading about them. Then I had a brief interest in Aragorn (yes, the Ranger!) and lost interest but still appreciated him. I really support Faramir and Aragorn the most.
For Faramir, I got the "aha" moment when he was riding out with his men to face the orcs on behalf of his father's wishes......it just made me want to cry.
For Aragorn, I already knew of Viggo Mortenson for his previous role in Crimson Tide, where he played as Weps (the guy who controls the missle launch sequence on the submarine, and he did a truly impressive job). However, when I saw his performance in the LotR movies, the time I really started to love him was his speech to the troops before they started fighting outside of Mordor.
And I love their long hair as well, so....

This is going to sound really sad...but I didn't really recognize any of the cast members in the movie right away untill after watching reviews for FOTR. Mostly cause, though I've seen some of their movies...from some of them...I didn't really notice them. Like, Eli, I only noticed him cause there was a movie of his that I watched(I can't remember which one though), and then I saw FOTR and was like..."oh". Liv, well that's cause everyone knows her...who doesn't?? lol But like Sean Astin? I didn't notice him in Ecino Man...I didn't even realize he was in that movie until after the trilogy was done. I didn't really know Ian M., Ian H., Sean Bean....this might sound surprising...but I didn't even notice Hugo Weaving...scary huh?? I watched The Matrix...but...he just didn't stand out to me.lol But then again, I didn't really like that movie...so...meh. However, I think the only characters I DIDN'T connect with AT ALL were Denethor and Boromir. They're about the only 2. I connected with the rest of them...but to get into that...would take a long post...lol and that could be scary. So, bye.

Denethor went mad cause he looked into one of the seeing stones that were left in Gondor. So, he thought that everything he saw was going to be sure to happen. That's how he knew that Aragorn was with Gandalf. That's how he found out that the Ring had been found. Apparently, Denethor's usual characteristics are more like Faramir's then Boromir's. But due to the seeing stone...he comes across more like Boromir...it's not true. Thought I'd share...sorry if I ruined it for you.
