I belive that there are a few discussion of The Hobbit in the "Tolkiens' Other Works" forum.
I myself loved the book, read it in high school and recently re-read it again!!
I will move this thread into "Tolkiens' Other Works" and we can continue the discussion there!!

"The Hobbit" is definitely a necessity in the Realm of ME. LOTR was written based upon events that occurred in The Hobbit. I can't really imagine reading the LOTR without knowing the events of what occurred some years before. Going into Fellowship, it was a thrill to know that Frodo was Bilbo's next of kin! What a Blast!

It was The Hobbit that first introduced me to LOTR. it's a nice read, very lighthearted. (compared to LOTR or the Silmarillion) recently i was in a production of The Hobbit at a community theatre so listening to all the lines 3 times a week for a month i basically have it memorized... :snooze: ;)
its a great book and i think it's equal to LOTR just on another scale

I loved the Hobbit. i read that book before I read any LOTR books and i really liked it. I was a great fairy tale but it had its exciting mouments. I would llove to read it again. I thought that it was a much more soft hearted tale than LOTR but I liked LOTR too.

I think I read it at school but I don't think I finished it so I read it again before reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time. I thought it was really good and just the right length for younger readers.

I love The Hobbit.
It is exciting and thrilling. It was what made me a Tolkien fan in first place, and it's perfect for newcommers to get in touch with Tolkien and Middle-earth. The "Flies and Spiders" chapters is very intense and I remember that even I felt a bit desperate the first time I read it.
The only thing I didn't like much was Smaug was easily killed, but I still rate it as a 5 star book.

I absolutely loved reading the Hobbit!
It's most certainly a neccessity to look back on whenever reading LOTR.
The Hobbit was what definately began the LOTR trilogy in the first place!
The One Ring, Bilbo, Gandalf, Gollum, etc...

I am very unhappy that i did not read the hobbit to its end before reading lotr. I read half of the hobbit in year three...but i got told to read something a bit more advanced....bugger my teachers!
I DID however get past the bit where bilbo picks up the ring and meets gollum...so i DID get the most essential background to lotr i suppose... :(

I always liked the Battle of Five Armies and "The Eagles are coming" which is mirrored in LOTR by Pippin (I like it when he thinks to himself "Wait, that's Bilbo's tale").
Also the first chapter is just so cute! With the narration, I almost feel like Tolkien is talking directlt to me.

The Hobbit is a must read book for any one planning on reading LOTR. This is because it gets you farmilar with some of the characters such as Gollum, Gandalf, Bilbo that will have a part in LOTR. it also tells you about the ring how Bilbo found it and so on which is the whole point of LOTR. So the hobbit is both an enjoyable book but is also a started book into the LOTR books.veryhappy

It was a very clever link...i didn't get it of course because i hadn't read the hobbit yet...i was like "bilbo?! bilbo's the last thing you think about before you 'die'?"

It's a lovely way of writing...keeping the reader personally involved...especially effective with children... :)

I loved the hobbit! it was the first Tolkien book i ever read. At first i was like "Oh boy, this is gonna be a LONG book!" but after reading 2 chapters i was hooked! I also liked the link with the Eagles and the Battle of Five Armies from the Hobbit and LOTR :) oh those books are just so awesome! haha
