I don't know whether to post this here or in FoTR...but this thread includes both movies...

Which character do you think was portrayed the best/most true to the books in the first two films of the LoTR series?

I personally think Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn did the best character portrayal...I mean he just looked so majestic at times, yet also so rustic and down to earth, just as he was in the book...also that is quite a hard look to portray!

I liked Sean Astin! hehe

But the best IMHO would have to be either Mckellan or Lee. Both did wonderful jobs pulling their characters right out of the books and portraying them on screen.
Mortensen would be a close runner up, but there were times at which I felt he was not sticking as true to Tolkien as the other two did. (this may have been PJ's fault but... )

lol yea...I completey forgot about McKellan and Lee when I was considering the best portrayal...I'll have to agree with you now, Ithielnor!! Lee and McKellan were amazing!! I think Lee has even met Tolkien and had been waiting a while to be in a movie of LoTR. He also re-reads the books every summer! Also, I am one of those who became interested in LoTR by the movies and read the books after I saw the first movie...so I may not be to accurate in my desicions of correct portrayals...but I'm interested in what other people think...

All the actors did an amazing job, but the 2 that stand out to me are Elijah Wood- Frodo could not have been portrayed any better. His bravery, determination and total committment to his goal is totally believable in EW's acting. The other is Viggo Mortensen. In the many years that I've been reading LOTR, THAT is how I imagined Aragorn portrayed. His quiet, gentle yet powerful character shines through VM's interpretation of :aragorn:

Andy Serkis :) I mean, how well can anyone portray this hideous creature thats not even human. Very good job. Also a big shout out to Ian's Gandalf and Christopher Lees Saruman. Excellent stuff.

I think Sean Astin, Chirstopher Lee, and Ian McKellan did the best in making their characters true to the book. Christopher Lee and Ian McKellan are big Tolkien fans, so that's not surprising.

I think that Ian Mckellen, Christopher Lee, Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, John Rhys- Davis, Cate Blanchette (sp?), Andy Serkis (with help from Weta Workshop), and Liv Tyler all fit thier roles:). I really couldn't pick one because i believe they were all literally born for the parts. Dom and Billy were also excellent so i should mention them too,and i guess Orlando Bloom, (though my vision of Legolas changed back and forth;)) . But all of those mentioned above i think were so perfect for thier characters and couldn't be any better.

Viggo Mortensen. The acting was spectacular - and a nod to the makeup and costuming too.

Viggo, but Lee and Mckhellen (spelled wrong) did very well. Astin and Wood were great also.

Welcome dr_em.....We're always happy to have another Viggo supporter here at WOTR (mainly because he's sooo hot, and he did a fantastic job)

I think Elijah did an amazing job considering he was 17 when he first began shooting. He was the perfect Frodo(although i am biased to him becasue he is gorgeous). Also Viggo did an excellent job as well. It must have been hard for him because he was called on after they had started filming so he was thrown into the deep end. They were the best!
