what was your favorite seen in the battle for helms deep. Mine was the begining and the end charge of the Rohirrum.

Definitly the last part, the ride of Thoeden and Aragorn, with Eomer and Gandalf coming to their aid...
"Theoden King stands along"....."Not along" mecry

i like the beginning when the Urks come up and everyone is all ready.... but my favorite part is when Legolas slides down on the shield and shoots arrows

Gandalf arriving with Eomer and the Rohirrim always gives me massive goose bumps... every single time... its incredibly uplifting.

I would say I love the Breaching of the wall. Such an amazing explosion. But my fav bit is the return of Gandalf. Its the music and the rising sun appearing over the hill that does it.

Periantari Andruil
August 25th,2003, 06:19 AM
I agree with Ring-bearer... the Breaching of the wall was AWESOME... whenever i saw it on the TTT trailer...i get so excited :whoohoo:
but when Gandalf rides down with Eomer and the Riders of the Rohirrim ... the music that accompanies that is just so great, so touching, so uplifting! :hooray:
Those two are my favorite scenes... so i'm indecisive between them...

The charge of Gandalf was my favorite part, for the same reasons as mentioned above. The music with the women chorus and all was just

Actually, I liked as Aragorn and Gimli were pulled up out of the battle by Legolas- the "Douglas Fairbanks" scene lol
But, for those listed, i chose the ride of the Rohirrim down the hill with Eomer and Gandalf in the lead! Great scene.

when Gandalf rides down with Eomer and the Riders of the Rohirrim ... amazing gets me everytime, i never get sick of watching it :)

August 27th,2003, 10:14 PM
Well it all rocks, of course, but the bit that gets me the most is final final charge out near the end of the battle.

"Fell deeds awake.
Now for wrath...
Now for ruin, and a red dawn!

Forth Eorlingas!"

Lots of actors have been praised for their portrayal of their given character, but I've never really seen much comment on Bernard Hill's portrayal of Theoden. Personally, I think he *owns* that character totally - a casting choice of the same high calibre as Viggo for Aragorn, or Sean Bean for Boromir.

Theres another good 'CHAAAARGE!!' opener in the RotK preview. "Ride now! Ride for ruin...and the world's ending!"

Cracking good stuff :-)

"Ride out with me, and meet them", "for death and glory" " for rohan, for your people" great lines. and also "theoden king stands alone" "not alone, Rohirrum"

I also voted for Gandalf and Eomer charging down the hill. Whenever Eomer says that line, I get this rush of adrenaline and then I practically melt. I love his voice!! I do agree that the whole scene, the music, the cinematography, everything about that scene is absolutely awesome, gorgeous, magnificent!! :ring: :ring:

And imagine how AWESOME, INCREDABLE, UNBELIVEABLE, SUPERB the ride of the rohirrum will be at the Pelennor fields cause theres like over twice as many riders and its much longer and greater.

Definately the best part was when Gandalf and the Riders of Rohan came charging down that steep slope straight into the battle and they just soared right through the enemy as if they weren't even there!! It made my heart skip a beat...and it was such beautiful cinematography!!

Definitely the last charge, and the arrival of Gandalf and Eomer's troops. I watched TTT last night for the first time since it left the theatres, and the charge of the Rohirrim actually brought a tear to my eye. mecry

That scene reminds me of The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Tennyson

My fave moment is when I see those ladders being drawn up against the wall...All I think is...."Oh, sh-t! They're in for it now!"

I also like the humor in Legolas' and Gimli dead count. Lightens it up a bit.

Narsil
September 2nd,2003, 05:45 PM
Nice (or scary) moment as well: after the wall has been breached Aragorn is lying on the ground and just regaining consciousness and behind him the Orcs are coming in. I would be scared to death seeing that coming towards me, he's on the ground on the same level as that entire army marching in (if you know what I mean). Get your *ss up :aragorn: ! :)

Lobelia Celebrian
September 2nd,2003, 08:41 PM
I absolutely loved it when Gandalf comes to their aid and Eomer brings all of his "army". It's so uplifting. Just when you start to think "how are they gonna kill all those orcs?!" ---There's Hope...
(but c'mon) the part when all the Elves show up. I mean that was just as "touching".

But another part at Helm's Deep that really "struck" me was when Haldir dies. I mean he was such an important character, and such a loved character. And the way that it shows him see all of the death around him, is just so heart-breaking.
But then Aragorn goes and kicks orc a**, and it's avenged.
:whoohoo:

"An alliance once exsisted between Men and Elves. We fought and died together. We've come to honor that alligiance..."

I love the first part when they are getting ready and the Uruk's are smashing there spears in the dirt... and the old man fires 1 single arrow... he he... so nice!

But i also really like the ending part:

Gandalf: "Theoden, king, stand alone."
Čomer: "Not alone."
[He draws out his sword.]
Čomer: "Rohirrim!"
Théoden: "Čomer!"
Čomer: "To the king!"

And all these riders come riding down the hill and the camera shot of first looking down on the Uruk's and then sliding to the left and up against thee Rohan Riders... brilliant... absolutely brilliant... so its hard to decide.

Morgothian
September 2nd,2003, 10:43 PM
How many uruk hai would you say were left like 6000. So the men and elves killed a good 4,000, Im just guessing though.

Radagast
September 2nd,2003, 11:13 PM
In the EE preview you say Eomer chasing the Uruks so they do not reach the forrest.. i dont know how many they were left...

ImDaMom
September 2nd,2003, 11:38 PM
I think Eomer was chasing the uruks INTO the forest, knowing that the Huorns will dispose of them.

My fave part? As they pull Aragorn and Gimli up from the causeway (very Errol Flynn, that) How heroic??

He he.

Oh, i completely forgot about the scene.. "I cannot jump the distance, you will have to toss me!!!" .........."dont tell the elf" Thats really great... and yes ImDaMom... very Errol Flynn he he!!

Ivyetta
September 3rd,2003, 09:24 PM
Oh, I love that part also, Radagast! I love the way they made that connection to the first movie, "Nobody tosses a Dwarf!" :)

I agree with you, Lobelia. Haldir's death was heart-breaking. And I love the way Aragorn feels that rage and leaps to the ladder and plumets to the Uruk-hai below. So 'Aragorny', :p.

I love the part when Legolas pulls up Aragorn and Gimli also, ImDaMom. That is heroic! And you know that they're so heavy because of all their armor and gear. Which makes it even more heroic!

I love also when Gandalf returns, that is so wonderful! And the way they added the bright light flash just before they collide, and all the Uruk-hai pull back their spears! That is so amazing!

I love the part after the wall is "broken" and Gimli jumps from it to Aragorn's aid. And when, soon after that, Legolas slides down on the shield, because no way will he leave his friends down there to fight alone; without him. And that's so great that he slides on the shield, because he didn't have to. He could have just ran down the stairs, shooting as he goes. But no, he had to be all "heroic". I love that! So 'Legolasy', :p, ;).

There is so much more.....:)

Radagast
September 3rd,2003, 09:35 PM
I am almost... gonna ask you Ivyetta... is there a part you dont like in Helms deep? He he...

Gimli: "Come on. We can take them!"
Aragorn: "It’s a long way."
Gimli: "Toss me."
Aragorn: "What?"
Gimli: "I cannot jump the distance so you have to toss me."
Gimli: "Ehh..Don’t tell the elf."
Aragorn: "Not a word."

I Love that part... Gimli is so cool... he is so proud, and that tends to backfire on him.. he he... but you dont wont to tease him to much.. cause he can take out 50 Full-size Uruk's with 1 Axe.... Grr...... Let them come!!!

Ivyetta
September 3rd,2003, 09:58 PM
Geeze, that's hard to say, Radagast.....I love the way the whole piece was done....

But, if I had to choose, I would say Haldir's death. I wish that wouldn't have happened. They did good at filming it; how it was in slow motion; and how Aragorn avenged him, But I still wish it hadn't happened.....

He he, Gimli, :) "....Yet my axe is restless in my hand. Give me a row of orc-necks and room to swing and all weariness will fall from me!..."

Radagast
September 3rd,2003, 10:27 PM

The absence of Arwen.

I second that Iarfirthwen!
(enough of her already!!!) :mmmm:

The music (Forth Eorlingas) that was placed when the riders in the fortress charged out to slay the Orcs was amazing... i liked how Aragorn :aragorn: told Theoden to charge out with him and "this is the hour where we draw our swords together..." I also love the lines when Theoden said "The horn of Helm Hammerhead will sound... one last time" (sorry if misquoting) and then Gimli :gimli: blows the horn.....

I love all those lines before they decide to charge out and meet the orcs head on =) great part of the battle that really shows real spirit!! :stomper:

Yeh, but don't get wrong. I do like her in the film. I quite like Liv in the role and don't mind about the change with Glorfindel. I understand there are reasons to do that in the film. BUT the whole thing with Arwen fighting at Helms Deep... it would've been too much for me. I reluctantly accept that they'll probably let Arwen overshadow Eowyn when the 3 movies are combined but Eowyn is the strong warrior princess from the books. I love her character to death and I would hate to see her brilliance diminished because they allowed her chracter to be overshadowed by Arwen [/rant].

Anyway, back on the road. I also loved some of the little things at Helm's Deep: images of kids playing a hand clapping game in the background oblivious to the preparations for war; the emotion conveyed when the old men and young boys left to fight; the scene with Hama's son; the interior shots of the caves (would've loved to see more of them). Out of the options you have above I'd say the breach of the wall (because they didn't expect it and really upped the anty),and the last charge (one last charge and the being saved are both powerful emotions).

I must also admit to loving the moment when the elves arrived (for a controversial move they did that bit well).
One thing I would've liked to have seen then is a mention that there were battles and skirmishes happening elsewhere in ME. Helm's Deep didn't represent the only major fighting. I would've liked Haldir to bring word of other battles being fought further north-east. I think it would've added to the enormity of the situation in ME, the peril they all faced and the dire nature of the situation.

My favourite part in Helms Deep is when you see Gandalf standing on the hill as the dawn rises and as he and Eomer and the rest of the horselords ride down the hill, the sun rises up behind them in a blinding light.

Radagast
September 5th,2003, 12:07 AM
Yeah thats Special effects and they are great!!!!!.... And the Uruk's though then can move in sunlight they are still a little weaken'd by it... and then ride down.!!!! AWSOME!

Ivyetta
September 5th,2003, 07:50 PM
Yes, I love how the Uruk-hai are weakened by the light. You get a feeling that the force of the lightness is so good, and that's why they pulled back, :).

I love that scene. Light = good.

Periantari Andruil
September 6th,2003, 02:22 AM
And the music that accompanied that part was just so perfect.... how Gandalf appeared in front was just awe-inspiring.... just a moment to reiterate on how important it is not to lose hope....
great, great, GREAT part! PJ couldn't have done it any better than filming it that way =)

Exactly, Lady Melanie, :).

I also like the very short part (it's actually right before Haldir's death) where everyone is yelling "Pull back!" and it shows Legolas, and I think another Elf, dragging Gimli back by his arms; who is stuggling to stay and fight......

...he he...I love Gimli.....he is so 'determined', :)........

Lady Melanie
September 7th,2003, 10:34 PM
Yes, I like that part as well. Gimli was like "let me at them!" thinking he could take all of orcs ect. out! That was kinda funny.:p

Narsil
September 8th,2003, 12:29 AM
It's funny: he wants to stay and fight (also after exiting Moria) but when he jumps down into the Orcs marching in through the breached wall, his *ss gets kicked and he disappears under the water. So he wants to fight, but his *ss gets kicked. Well, I guess he is very determined lol.

Lady Melanie
September 8th,2003, 11:13 PM
Shame Gimli. In the warg fight, he is like "Bring your pretty face to my axe" and then Legolas shoots the warg. It is funny in Helms Deep though when he tries to fight then almost drowns in the water from the drain.

That was the best scene of Helm's Deep !!

Ivyetta

Oh Sam, :).....

I just thought of another part I love; well, it's not really a "part", more like an "observation" on the viewers end; anyways, I love the way, after Haldir comes with the Elves, Haldir gives up his "position" to Aragorn. I mean, do you notice how through the Battle, it's Aragorn leading the Elves; ordering them? He's doing Haldir's job. Because really, Haldir is the Leader of the Elves. Originally, he would be leading them......It just shows how "trusting" Haldir is towards Aragorn, :).....

Radagast
September 11th,2003, 08:10 PM
Yes precisely. Therefore its even more sad that Haldir dies to!

Ivyetta
September 12th,2003, 08:38 PM
Yes, it is!

I thought of another part that I love:
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned already, but; I love the part when the Uruk-hai are raising the Ladders to the Helm, and Legolas shoots an arrow right at the line thats pulling the Ladder up; and then the Ladder falls! :hooray:.

It's so neat what one Legolas arrow can do, ;)

Lady Melanie
September 13th,2003, 12:17 AM
It is like Haldir trusts Aragorn so much that he knows that he will not lead them wrong. Its such a shame that PJ made Haldir die, he didn't really deserve itmecry It is really cool what Legolas arrows can do. Pity he didn't kill the orc with the torch with his first arrow though but then that was one determined urak hai. The scene where the wall blows up is great! Where all the pieces of the wall come down crushing the enemy. Great special effects:thumbs:

I like when legolas slides down the stairs..I mean, forst at the beginning of the movie he flings abck up onto the horse the he slides down stairs im thinking "wow...this elf has some cool moves"

I also like when Gimli can't see.

"whats happening?"
" shall I describe it or would you like me to get you a box?"

Lady Melanie
September 14th,2003, 12:40 AM
I know that this has nothing to do with HD but that scene where Legolas swings himself up on to the horse is just so weird. I wonder if Orlando did that stunt himself? Oh, I also like it when Legolas rides the shield down the stairs.

Radagast
September 14th,2003, 12:43 AM
When Legolas swings himself up on the horse... In the Theaters everyone was standing up.. totally stunned.. and amazed... it is not a stunt.. its completely CG.. Computer Generated... But really cool move!

That elf' can boogie!!

Yeah Ivy... the part were he shoots the robe... Man... and you see all theese Uruk Hai.. holding on this huge ladder... and they look like Ants trying to save there lifes.... SO COOL!

I have to agree with the cast commentary when Sean Astin is talking about the level of jealousy he feels towards the elf. Legolas is so cool!

Lady M....while Leggy's leap onto the horse is CG, the idea of a leap onto the horse from in front is found in the Sil...Beren leaps onto a horse being ridden towards him! PJ took that right from the book. Just another reminder of how much PJ loves Tolkien,

"That elf' can boogie!!"............lol..........

Concerning Orlando Bloom doing the stunt onto the Horse:
My sister, (who loves him), read somewhere that the way they shot it is that Orlando Bloom jumped off the Horse, and then they sort of "rewound" it. Of course there was some Computer Generated stuff......Anyways, she says that Mr. Bloom does all of his stunts; that he doesn't have a "stunt double"......
..oh my.........

Daeron, those are wonderful shots! Thank you, :). Ummm.....If it's not too bold to ask.....could you maybe get the picture of Pippin when the Ents are about to march. The picture of him right when Treebeard says: "Boom a Room, come my friends..." (When Pippin looks up)?. Forgive me if I'm just talking silly,.......

Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain, And the stream that falls from hill to plain; Better than rain or rippling brook, (Pippin only) Is a mug of beer inside this Took! /Does'nt have much to do with favorite parts in Helms Deep but... hey... if they add a scene like this one in the TTT Extended Version I would be really happy.... you hear that PJ??")

Oh of course I've seen it Radagast! The Extended is on VHS also, which I own,.

Thank you for the photos! I've been all through the Photo section here, :p. I love that part! The song, their voices, the way Frodo dances around the table! I love it all! If I ever meet Elijah Wood, he would have to dance around a table with me!, lol.....

Gandalf's return was awesome...but it would have been more surprising (for those who haven't read the books yet like myself) if they hadn't used it all over the commercials and trailers!!
But as far as Helm's Deep...I cried, I cried when Haldir died! :(
