I didn't quite know where to write this but here goes: I know I'm porbably beeing picky but isn't Saruman supposed to be of many colors, I was kinda explains alot so I was kinda suprised when it wasn't even mentioned in the movie.
I mean it explains why gandalf becomes white and the fact that he eventually gets more powerfull than him ..
any thoughts?

I bet they won't even mention it...It's too philosofical for an action movie...

I agree. Too philosophical to be mentioned, unless it's included in an Extended Edition; yet in the meantime:

The Fellowship of the Ring.

" [ . . . ] For I am Saruman, the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!" (Tolkien 310).

"I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered" (310).

" [ . . . ] It (white) serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and white light can be broken" (311).

I always thought that he meant that figuratively...meaning that he could have many powers..... at least that's what i thought =)

Ooh, that's an interesting thought PA! I thought Sarman wore many colors myself, though since it's in the book, and I see the movie more than I read the book (because the books take more time), I tend to forget really...but yeah, it's prolly too philosophical and one of the things that doesn't "moooove along" the plot, it's simply not in the films.

Thanks Ashley =) but yes, PJ likes to speed things about... thats' why he changed Faramir's character.... :mmmm: i think Philippa Boyens said something about Faramir's book character was too static or someting that's why he had him tie up the hobbits and bring them to Henneth-Annun then to Osgiliath.... :mmmm: (but this convo is for another thread) =)

Yeah... But I still wish they hadn't ruined Faramir like that. :(

Saruman was literally of many colors in FotR. Gandalf saw his cloak change color as he moved.

I thought about this when the I first watch FotR (so long ago now). I was confused because in the Orthanc scenes with Gandalf (the grey) and Saruman, you could not tell that he was no longer white. Indeed, it was not until TTT that I could clearly see that Saruman was not white. With TTT we meet Gandalf the white, who's white robes outshine the "white" of Saruman fairly brilliantly. It was never addressed in the dialogue, but I think PJ dirtied up the robes Lee wore as shout out to the book fans who pay attention to such tiny details. Grungy may not be what Tolkien had in mind but I think it worked well to show how Saruman had changed.

In the extras of the FOTR EE they say that they applied an 'aging' process to Saruman's robes after designing them.

They also point out that they wanted a 'somewhat grungy' look.

I've never really noticed a 'shimmer' of colors on Saruman (and believe me, I've payed attention! ;) )
