Ok, does ANYONE know how Galadriel, Arwen and Eowyn did their hair? I know for a fact that Galadriel's is wavy, how to achieve this I'm not sure. Arwen's is different in certain scenes. Eowyn's I have to clue, sometimes it seems wavy and sometimes it looks like it may have been scrunch. PLEEZE HELP ME!!!

Let's see...I know that in the chase scene from FotR, the top part of Arwen's hair was herringbone-braided in three parts, and there were strands hanging in front of her ears. I'm trying to figure out Eowyn's hair, too...it seems like in the scene when they're all going to Helm's Deep, just the front strands are pulled back and kind of 'tied' in a sort of knot...well, maybe not a knot, but...how do I put this...*thinks* You know when you're tying your shoe, the first step before you make the loops? Like that. I hope I made sense... But then, how does it stay up? About the waves...whenever my friend puts her hair in two french braids, leaves it all night, and takes it out in the morning, it has a striking similarity to all the ladies' wavy hair. Try that and tell me if it works! :)

kinda like half a reef knot do you mean? lol

its where you put right over left then left over right...or possibly left over right then right over left....don;t worry...lol...it makes sens ein my head....

I meant how they made there hair wavy/curly/scrunched, for the love of Luthien!!!! I know almost exactly how Eowyn and Arwen did most of their hairstyles. But yes, your exactly right on how Eowyn did her hair on the way to Helm's Deep, it's a knot. And the French braiding thing doesn't work on my hair, it just look stupid when i'm done. However, there is a product that might work that I know of.

Shieldmaiden
September 17th,2003, 05:13 AM
Yes! I'm right about hair for once!

What product do you mean, Arwen? I'd like to try it out, as no one in my family knows how to french braid...

Oh, thanks for explaining it to me, BG!

They're called 'SolarRollers', cool things, mine are too small of a size. I suggest getting a big size, Arwen's waves are pretty big in some scenes. Oh, there not electric, sprits your hair and then put them in, or put them in and then sprits your hair (Lightly!). They say you can blast 'em with a dryer, that helps speed up drying. But experiment and let us know what happens.

Hmmmm, sometimes the old fashioned methods can be cheaper and of the right effect.

For large curls, I suggest "ragging" your hair. Curlers are great, but if you have hair Arwen's length, they become very tricky to put in properly (voice of experience there as I have very long hair).

"Ragging" is the process of winding sections of wet/damp hair around long strips of material. Once your hair dries, you unwind the material, and work on the curls>

The tighter you wind, the tighter or smaller the curls will be. If you have thick sections, you'll proabably want to work with damp hair if you wish your hair to dry before the next turn of century.

I'd also suggest a smoothing or styling product to help if you have fizzy or curl resistant hair. That will help preserve the curl.

Another option, and likely the one adopted on set, is the use to ceramic hair irons. The hair would have first been smoothed, Then strands wound around fingers and carefully set using the hair iron. Once curled, the strands would have been gently tugged out to give a natural, flowing effect. Very tricky to do without burning your fingers, ears, scalp and anything else you care to name.

If using any hair iron, always use on dry hair and never on wet or damp hair. That sizzling you hear when using on wet hair is the sound of your hair boiling. That's never a good thing.

As for Galadriel and Eowyn's waves, I suspect hair irons with a crimping attachment was used. That and perming are the only ways to get uniform curl undulation such as Galadriel's, and Eowyn to a lesser extent.

On the way to Helms' Deep, Eowyn took the upper front strands of her hair away from her face, twisted them around and then pinned them into place. It looks like a knot but is easier to do and get out. Believe me, with long curly hair, the last thing you ever want to do is tie it willfully into little knots unless you're planning on shaving your head when you're tired of your knots.;)

For those with straight hair, there are heaps of curl encouragers and amplifiers. Few have dead straight hair and those products will enhance your natural wave. Be careful of using products on hair extensions. Synthetics need special products and naturals require very careful care.

For those of us with curly hair, try using products that are anti-frizz serums if you want to loosen curl.

Being a Tigi fan, I can recommend Curls Rock for curling hair and Control Freak Shampoo, Conditioner and Serum for smoothing it. L'Oreal Liss Extreme shampoos and conditioners are also great.

Most importantly of all for all three characters, their hair was in great condition (seemingly) so minimise product load and if heat styling, protect the hair shaft. Ceramic heat styling devices are best for your hair.

No worries.... I'm no expert and I've had my more than fair share of hair woes. I figure it helps to pass on what I've learnt the hard way.

I plait my hair in rather large plaits before I go to bed. When I wake up in the morning it's wavy. A lot more comfortable than ragging!!!

There is also this site...Dreamweaver braids (http://www.dreamweaverbraiding.com/index.htm) It shows you how to do the hairstyles step by step.

Being a hairstylist...there are several different ways of achieving the "wavy" hair you see on Galadriel, Eowen, and Arwen. I believe both Liv and Cate have fairly straight hair naturally and fairly fine stranded hair as well. From the looks of it on the movies, it looks like 3-4 different sized barrel curling irons were used to achieve the various waves. In one scene of the movie and it completely escapes me which scene, Arwen's hair lookes like it was braided in several braids overnight and then let out and brushed to achieve the wavy hair. As for hair care products to help hold the curl and keep the frizzys out, there are so many...Rusk, Matrix, and many others. Rusk is my favorite. Specifically Gusty styling cream. Its awesome! ;)

I just use hairspray!! lol Thanks for the tips, laurelin!

Yeah, some people's hair don't hold curls. Try finger-brushing it.

Laurelin
November 14th,2003, 06:37 PM
My hair is very fine and somewhat thin and absolutely NO curl whatsoever to it. For me to get curls that last more than two seconds (if that) I have to use quite a bit of styling products and a hot curling iron. Ah to be blessed with perfect hair...only in my dreams! lol ;)

Elfdaughter
November 14th,2003, 06:40 PM
Now I feel really lucky!! I can just wash my hair the night before, plait it, and the waves stay in for up to three days! (probably longer, but by that time I'd need to wash my hair again.)

Also, when I take out my braids, it looks weird at the ends where the rubber bands were. What about scrunching? I saw a girl with long blond hair and it looked a bit like eowyn's, i asked her how she did it and she said it was scrunched.

Elfdaughter
November 17th,2003, 06:35 PM
DON'T USE RUBBER BANDS!!!!!! That's the worst you could do!! Use the small fabric covered bands, and don't twist them round too many times.

Laurelin
November 17th,2003, 11:55 PM
When your hair is still wet, you add gel, mouse, or whatever to your hair and as you blow dry your hair you take your free hand and grab a fistfull of hair and "scrunch" it (squeeze it into a loose fist). This will (if you hair has some natural curl/wave to it) give it a wavy look. HOpe this helps. ;)

Could you do that with wax?

Laurelin
November 18th,2003, 02:36 PM
Yes, but the effect would be a bit different due to the weight and consistency of the wax. Depending on your hair type, it could pull the wave/curls out due to the weight of the wax. Especially in fine hair (like mine!)! ;)

Elfdaughter
November 18th,2003, 02:44 PM
So what would you recommend? Gel or moose (sp??)?

Laurelin

If you want stiffer waves/curls then gel. Mouse is lighter. :)

I've always found that Pantene Pro-V Curl Defining Mousse works best...i've tried many different mousses and i've always come back to that one. It may seem to make you hair a bit stiff for the first hour or so after your hair has dried (i always leave mine to dry naturally so i dont know if it would be the same after blow drying) but the stiffness soon wears away and you're left with really defined supple curls.....my hair is naturally ringletty but now it's even more so :)

But the Ladies in LotR don't have curly hair, they have wavy hair!!!

Elfdaughter
November 28th,2003, 04:07 PM
Yay!! Got some!! What I've found works is to wash your hair at night, comb the moouse through whilst it's still damp, then plait your hair. Leave it overnight to dry, then when you take the plaits out...tada! Wavy hair!

I'm going to dress up as an elf (any elf) for the premiere.. but I can't make up my mind about my hairdo. I have fairly long hair, it's straight. But an elf could probably have straight hair, so I'm not too worried about waves or curls or anything. Even though my hair would get wavy if I made it wet and then braided it and dried it. And it would stay that way for a day or so.
But should I just let the hair be as it is and put some for of band around my head instead? Get a little bit of hair stay in front of the ears, then get the rest back. And another question.. how do you make your hair stay like that? When I've just washed it it'll look great, but after a few hours it will be all over the place. Is hairspray or something else best? It's not supposed to look like there's anything else in the hair. ;) It's supposed to look natural. And it's supposed to stay on my back and not be everywhere. If you understand what I'm trying to say. :)
Arwen usually has her hair out I think. But in some scenes she's got a sort of crown. I thought that I might try to find something similar to that, or some sort of band of some kind. I've seen other elves wear that too and not only Arwen and Elrond and those other royalties. :)

There are always wigs or hair extentions ;) My friend (Bramble) will put some extentions in her hair to make it longer for the premiere, even though it's already to her shoulders.

Ok...lemme see. Try W8less hairspray by Rusk (nice hold, but feels and moves very natural and non-hairsprayish feel) and Shining by Rusk which give a nice sheen to your hair without it looking or feeling like there are hair care products in your hair. Then I would wear your hair straight, parted in the middle and add a circlet and that ought to do it! :) *hairstylist*

Ok, before we go any further I need to clarify something: I have discovered 2 kinds of waves. Theres the type that is actually a 's' shape and lies flat on your head, braiding your hairs brings these resultes. Because the braids are flat. Then theres the kind that 'stands up', so to speak, this is the kind of waves the elves (and Eowyn) were. Also, think about the method behind curling your hair: the curlers heat up your hair and then cool, making the curl stay for awhile and speeding curling time up. What if we were able to heat the braids and cool them, speeding up the process?

I've got another problem now though, as I don't seem to be able to find a circlet. So I may just put part of my hair back and fasten it with some form of elvish looking pin or something like that. But that'll be a later problem. :)

In some pics of the dream scene in TTT, Arwen's hair looks almost wet and kinda crisp. I've seen that kind of look before in other movie's, how is that done? I'm asking since some of you here are hairstylers.

Also, trying doing a lace braid when you braid your hair, I've been toying with this braid and have been getting good results.

Lace braid! Good idea! Has anyone got any good ideas for a medieavel hair style?

Arwen, Elven Princes
December 2nd,2003, 12:10 AM
That depends, I can make a style look medieval by using a clip or barrette or something that looks mediavalish. The Reverse Roll looks very medieval when you do it crown style. http://www.dressytresses.com/hair-styles/reverse-roll/default.asp That's a great site, look around and try to find some medieval stuff, I came by one product that was named after Galadriel!
Also, try this book, I have it and it's one of my favorites: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1570540187/qid=1070319214/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-1579578-8059865?v=glance&s=books
I learned a lot in this book and could still learn more. One of my favorite very formal hairstyles is the Victorian twist (it's in the book). To jazz it up let some short strands hang down in front and curl them into ringlets, and load them down with hairspray to really make 'em stay. You can use a silver elvish or medieval barrette and it looks good and holds it secure. I can't tell you much, most of the styles I use are aimed for people with long, thin oval faces who want long hair.

Also, when you braid your hair for wavyness, do them in two braids like pig-tails and do them as tight as possable.

Also I would like to ask an important question: What's a waver? Can anyone, exspecialy you hairstylists, tell me what a waver is and does?!?!?!?!?!?

Hey, does anyone know how Eowyn did her hair for the funeral scene in the extended Two Towers?

Arwen, Elven Princes
December 7th,2003, 10:19 PM
All I can tell you is that she somehow has it rolled back and then some kind of braid that is tucked up or something. Not much is known about that style, we never get a good look at the back.

Laurelin
December 9th,2003, 12:07 AM
Sorry I've been away so long (out of town)- anyway...

If you heat up the braids or curlers (hot setting on the hair dryer) and then rapidly cool them (cold setting on the hair dryer), what you'll find is that you'll feel like your hair is a bit courser feeling. If you heat it up and let it cool gradually it will feel softer. Make sure you use good hair products when doing this so it protects your hair. Hope this helps. :)

Arwen - they (I'm pretty sure) use a Gel, perhaps like Biolage Gelee. I've had sucess with that kind of texture using that product. Give that a shot. :) As for a waver...hmmm. That could be referring to a permanent wave (aka - perm). In what context was is used??

I saw the word somewhere and imedietly became intersted, so I ran a Google search on it and came up with this:
http://www.totalvac.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=totalvac&Product_Code=11/180
Ok, so that's just an example if you were worrying about the price. :p

Also, the drying and cooling process. I have noticed Eowyn's hair seems to have a kinda couser look, while the elves are softer. I'll give it a whirl.
Can you braid you hair, sprits it with water, dry it with a blow dryer and still have the same results as sleeping with wet braids?

Laurelin
December 9th,2003, 05:45 PM
Actually, sleeping with wet braids will produce a slightly crisper curl/wave to the hair whereas drying it will give it a softer look (gentle s as opposed to sharp s). Also, if you add gel to either, it will hold the wave better. ;)

Laurelin

Sort of Arwen, except you don't try to "curl" your hair around it. Rather pretend your pressing your hair in various sections. You can get them at Sally's Beauty supply for everyone (not just stylists), Walgreens (sometimes), and various other drug stores (Osco, Eckerds, Hooks, mmm can't remember others from different areas of the country). Oh yeah...they used to be called "Crimpers" back in the early 1980's.

Also, this isn't going to damage my hair?

Laurelin
December 27th,2003, 09:22 PM
Anytime you use heat or chemicals on your hair its slightly damaging. However, if you use good products, conditioners and shampoos your hair should be just fine (unless you have course hair that splits easily or super fine hair - they require a bit more effort to keep nice if the hair is long).

I think I could achieve those waves (in the link you posted) with a large barrel curling iron and hairspray. Use a cream or gel when the hair is wet, blow dry and use the iron to create the waves and spray it immediately after the wave is achieved. There are other ways too.

Arwen, Elven Princes
December 27th,2003, 10:37 PM
I got a waver at a local drug store, but the waves are a little to small for my liking. However, I'll work with it some more. I saw a triple barrel waver and wondered what it was, can you tell me more about it, please?

i have long wavy hair, not white-blone but kinda honey coloured, sorta like eowyns! yay!. has drawbacks though, if i brush it when dry it goes so frizzy that i get lost in it!

also, hate to spoil the party but the answer to at least galadriels hair and maybe eowyns too is that they wore wiggs. almost evry charicter in the movie wore a wigg.

if you don't want a wigg, my friend has dead-straight hair and she scrunches it. that works pretty well. basicly just experiment. try everything and see what works best for you.

Yep! Experimentation is the best way to find the right way for styling one's hair. ;)

Galadriel's hair style is really easy to do.... Basically, all I do now, is to wash my hair each night, then plait it. It depends how deep you want the waves as well, whether you put your hair in one plait, two, or more.

OK, I have the braiding method for those how want it, they're actually two methods.
This method is if you want your hair wavy up to the roots.

Wash your hair and brush it out. Put some gel on the tips and around the forehead, then do all the rest of your hair. You want a lot of gel in your hair, I just use clean gel.

Semi blow dry your hair, you want to get it kind of dry so to speed up the drying after the braids are in. Brush your hair, if it's too dry sprits it with a little water.

Starting at your forehead, begin like you are going to make a singe French braid. French braid half your hair to the point were your part would stop, the crown of you head. About the time you add the strands above your ears. Stop adding hair. Braid till you can't braid any more, even if strands pop out don't worry. Make it tight, but tie it off loosely.

With the rest of your hair, French braid it horizontally so it kind of makes a half crown against the back of your head. If there is less hair then there was on the top braid make it looser. Again, braid till you can't braid anymore even if strands pop out. This is kind of tricky, but don't worry if it looks bad.

You can sleep in this overnight or leave it in all day if you have an event that night, but looks dorky when the braids are in. If you have thick hair the drying time is going to be long, more then overnight. Try to wait till the last minute to take out the braids, if they still feel wet inside blow-dry it on a low setting and then again with cool air. Take off the elastic bands and GENTLY take out the braids, do not brush your hair!! GENTLY run your fingers through your hair and make your part, you can us a rat tail comb but be careful not to fuzz the hair. Spray all of your hair (with hairspray) and finger comb it before the spray dries. Spray it one or two more times, you'll have to remake your part. And there you have it!

Method 2 is if you want just the ends wavy, Arwen's hair is like this when styled.

Wash, brush, gel and semi-dry you hair. Brush it out before you braid.

Part your hair all the way down the middle, you will be make a complex style of pigtails.

With side 1, gather all the hair above the ear. Start lace braiding, add hair from the side under your ear. There should be hair on the side of the part when you get to the bottom of your head, gather that up and add it to the braid. Finish your braid by tying it off loosely, make the braid tight. Do the same to side 2 and sleep in it, again wait till the last minute to take it out.
After you take it out, style your hair if your going to. If not, do the same method of spraying and finger combing, but don't brush your hair!!
Ta-da!! You did it! Well, actually you just read the instruction and your probably going to go do it.

ok now for my hair problems :p

I have extremely THICK hair, and it is really long. not quite as long as Arwen's but its getting there.

The first problem I'm having is MAJOR static! It's a real pain in the butt! what can I do to get rid of the static?

The second problem I have been having is every time I try to do the braids to get wavy hair it makes ME look like Mia Thermopolis. And then at the bottom where the bands were its straight and it looks really dorky cause I am a staticfied, poofy Mia Thermopolis with straight ends. I have tries scrunching but it doesn't work really well for me cause I have such thick hair and it already takes an hour for me to blow dry when I don't to anything else to it.

Do you have any suggestions for me?

hmm... I have the same problem, but my hair's really fine. I'd advise getting a different brush - plastic ones usually increase the static.

Well...for the static issue I would suggest trying a touch of gel even when you braid your hair as it will keep it in place and control static. I prefer using Biolage gellee (I think I spelled that correctly). When it comes to the ends of your hair, try to let that part dry naturally and/or add extra gel to the ends. Also, if you have a diffuser to add to your hair dryer, that will do wonders for reducing static prone hair. Hope this helps! ;)

Poor Ed, you seem so sad about it! :( I bet you look just as adorable as you did before. :) Why did you have to cut it? :mmmm: Don't worry sweetie, it will grow back in no time! ;)

about a month ago my hair was past the middle of my back. but i hadn't mantained it, so the ends were all raty/split and my mom had to cut off nigh three inches. i love long hair (and am growing it out again!). but don't feel bad, elfdaughter. hair is one of thos things that you can always start over on!
like every good lotr girl fan i'm going nuts trying to figure out eowyn's funeral hairstyle, still working on it, might actually be getting somewhere.

I have those horrible ends you're talking about, RG.
I have long blonde hair...which sounds good, Eowyn has long blonde hair, but my hair happens to be horrible straight, rather thin, with lots of split ends. :o But I FINALLY found a way to make my hair "ripple"...
Whenever you're not wearing your hair down, (this is gonna be hard to explain), gather all your hair at the back of your head, (it can be low...at the nape of your neck), and roll your hair around your hand. Take a rubber band and tie it in the middle of the roll...oy....I hope that makes SOME sense, but it works...
Aw, Elfdaughter, don't worry!!!! :cuddles: Hair grows back!!!! ;)
What's going to be really scary is when I dye my hair in two weeks to Arwen's color. :o roflmao I hope it turns out good, this is the first time I've ever dyed my hair.

Please tell us how your hair turns out, i'm very intersted!
While i do have pretty thick hair, it's heavy and weighs down my face (thus unflattering), not a lot of lift and it's almost straight. like if i blow dry then brush it, it'll usually turn out 99% straight, except for my underlayers with curl like crazy if i leave 'em alone. but you have to keep in mind that all those girls wore wigs. high quality wigs.

Yeah... but then I saw what was happening to my face as she cut it - it's brought out my features a lot better! I still get the odd pang when I see girls with really beautiful hairstyles, and realise I can't get my hair like that anymore....

Cuiel Rilwen
May 3rd,2005, 07:14 AM
I have the same thing...I always had long hair and refused to cut it...but it really made my face "drown" and when I got older I realized the quality of the hair was too poor...so I cut it semi short and then it just got shorter and shorter! lol My hair is much softer and behaves better when it's short, and it's much more becomming than that mop of hair was...it was huge! Like a cloud of hair! I still sometimes want long hair again but when it grows beneath my ears it kinda curles outwards and I look like I got wings and I'm gonna take off into space and then I flip out and run to the hairdresser! lol

When are we gonna see that new hairstyle ED?

Okay, I've read through this entire thread and haven't found an answer to my question. Arwen's hairstyle in the Dream sequence in TTT, can anyone tell me how that's done? Obviously it's pinned, but I don't know how it's done. Is there an easy way to do it that doesn't require a second pair of hands? I've got thick long hair, which hangs dead straight and holds NOTHING!!!! Those waves are going to be nigh unachievable, but hopefully I could at least do this.

The Renaissance Girl
May 27th,2005, 08:54 PM
Well, fortunately, Silverleaf, that's one of the easiest styles Arwen wears! It's basically a “flip through” or “backward hair flip”, as far as I know.
Part your lovely, long locks down the middle. Using your index fingers, take the front sections of your hair from in front of your ear to the end of the part/crown of your head. Kind of use your hands to roughly brush your hair back, don‘t stress it. Tie the two strands together with an elastic band (or whatever you call those things). Reach in with your hand, grab the combined strands and pull them through. It kind of looks like your hair is cascading out of the top of your head. If your hair is heavy it might take a few pins to support it and make it “poof” up more.
Play with it, pull at it, pick at it until it looks ok. This might take a few tries, just be very artsy with it, don't be a perfectionist about it. Hope you got all that and hope it helps!!! Have fun!

I think it has, but doesn't hurt to mention again. They give a lot of opinions there, which is helpful. Not everything works for everyone. Now I have a question: does anyone here have really heavy, straight hair that holds nothing for longer than 2 hours with just ordinary styling products, and have found something that'll hold something like waves and not make your hair stiff and dry?

The Renaissance Girl
June 8th,2005, 06:36 PM
hmm, my hair is bra-strap length, very heavy and almost straight (it'll have a LITTLE wave if i let it air dry). when i braid my hair for waves I put lots of clean gel in it, then braid when it's JUST DAMP, almost dry. after it drys i spray. for really thick hair i recommend braid the hair when it's damp, even if the top layers aren't wet. otherwise it will take more than overnight to dry.

Manveri Silverleaf
June 8th,2005, 07:18 PM
No waves here. But I get less frizz when I blow dry (which is rare - it takes too long and I can't spend every morning blow-drying this hair). What product do you use?
