"Where is the horse and the rider?"
It is like he is completely desparing which I suppose he was at that point in the battle.

Oohh, I don't like that, "He took a little tumble off the cliff" But, at least he didn't say, "He's splattered on the rocks below". Sorry, I shouldn't have said that.....
I love when Gandalf says that, Radagast, :). I also love when he says:
"...Gandalf...yes, that is what they used to call me....Gandalf the Grey. That was my name...."

Hmmm...that's hard...I don't think I have a favourite line, just favourite scenes.
Well...I like it when Aragorn says "It will not fall" because that's incredibly ARAGORN-like. A lot of his quotes from TT the book are short sentences like that. It's Aragorn-like...
But I also like Elrond's forsight...just because it's book tho he doesn't say it. (it's sadly beautiful).
But one thing I like to do is overvoice the character with the CORRECT wording. I just did this with TT recently:
MY version. (book)
Gandalf: "Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and something to bandy crooked words with a serving man until the lightning falls!"
I overvoice Gandalf while he's saying: "Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and something to bandy crooked words with a witless worm."
*grin*

That is a good part when Gandalf returns and breathes his first breath like being born again only more wiser this time.

I like this line because of the fear and disgust in Frodo's voice when he says it!

Sam: It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end... because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back the way it was when so much bad happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing... this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you... that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo... I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't . They kept going... Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding on to Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for.

Ivyetta

We can only hope... but yeah that was a really amazing speech... and the way he said it... it was just perfect and you get the feeling of just how dedicated he is as an actor...
Ivyetta
September 11th,2003, 07:23 PM
Your right, Radagast; the way he said it. He said it like he's really just an innocent little Hobbit in the middle of fire and evil; and that his Master and friend is being "over come" by it, and he's trying to comfort him......with the truth. He said it just like Samwise Gamgee would, :).
"....I think at last we understand one another, Frodo Baggins...."
I've read that a lot of people don't like this line. But I love it. Is there anyone here who likes it as well?.....
Radagast
September 11th,2003, 08:06 PM
Yes... and indeed it sounds great..... Its worth fighting for.... That line just stays with me...
Notice my signature... That is one of my favorites from Return of the king....
with the other line:... the one Gandalf tells in the preview... something about... Understand, things are now in motion, that cannot be undone (there is alot more)..... I cannot remember the last part... but it really shows how Wise he is... I love it.,...

Sorry for duble posting... here's my favorite lines from ROTK
Pippin: Is their any hope, Gandalf, for Frodo and Sam?
Gandalf: There never was much hope.. just a fools hope...
Theoden: I will have you smile again, not greeve for those who's time has come.
Aragorn: He has gone unchallenged long enough!
Gandalf: Understand things are now in motion that cannot be undone. If the ring is destroyed Sauron will fall. But if Sauron regains the ring his victory will be so complete, that none can forsee the end of it, while this world Lasts!
Merry to Pippin: We shall live to see the Shire again
Gandalf: The board is set, the pieces are moving, we come to it at last.... The great battle of our time!
Denethor: The words has reached my ears of this Aragarn son of Arathorn, and I tell you now.. I will NOT bow to this ranger from the north....
Theoden: Ride now,... ride for ruin and the worlds ending!!!!!!
I love theese lines....

"...I don't think you will find it that way.....It isn't easy to find..."
I love that part in The Two Towers! Pippin really shows his "cleverness" there, ;).
"...For a moment Pippin was silent. Then suddenly in the darkness he made a noise in his throat: gollum, gollum. 'Nothing, my precious,' he added..."
ooh hoo! I wish they would have put that in the movie!...

Wow Radagast! All that Elvish! What were you saying? Forgive me, I don't know how to speak Elvish. I really want to learn though.....
"Gilraen gwannant nô i-ethuil dolel."
What does that mean? What does it all mean?
I know that "Mae Govannen" means "Welcome"
And "Namarie" means "Farewell"
And I think that "Neen" (I don't think that's how you spell it, ) means "Love"........, ??...

I love Arwen's line, "there is still hope", it just gives me shivers :whoohoo: , and also Frodo's "There here. They've come." Freaky!! :elfeek: i was watching it at about 2 in the morning once with all the lights off and my parents not at home, and it really scared me!! :hyper: lol

My favorite line in the ROTK is during the seige of Minas Tirith.
"Gandalf did not move. And in that very momment , away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cockk crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the moring that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn."

Ooooo...that's good! There are just some of those great lines in Tolkien that give you goosebumps and make your eyes widen and your heart ache :efleek:...that's one of them. ;)
One of my favorites is from Fotr, though I can't remember the exact wording, it's when they describe Aragorn saying goodbye to Arwen, taking Frodo's hand at Cerith Amroth (sp? did i get that right? ) in Lothlorien and leaving the place, never to come there again as a living man :(...makes me want to burst out crying! mecry

Striderfan
September 17th,2003, 01:09 AM
That's a GOOD line ...I'm thinking of more, but I don't know the exact wording, I'm bad with things like that ...Oh, I know! :elfeek: I love the line from TTT where Pippin says, " Look! Strider the Ranger has come back!" and Aragorn replies, " He has never been away, I am Strider and Dunadan too, and I belong to both Gondor and the North" :hyper: Great line, just sums up Aragorn comming to terms with his destiny...nice job Mr. Tolkien.

Yes, the description is SO perfect and gives you such a perfect sense of his character......I also really like gollum's line, "Wraiths!! Wraiths on wings!!!" ;) I just re-read that part this afternoon at school, so whenever my friends came up to me I would start yelling, "Wraiths on wings!!!" lol That's another thing about tolkien..so many of his lines are so perfect for quoting...;)

my favourite favourite line is elrond's lecture to Arwen - 'you will linger on. in darkness and doubt, as nightfall in winter without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees, until the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent.'

Well, this is a hard one! I have so many. Well, here we go!;)

Frodo: "The Ring is treacherous. We will hold you to your word."
Aragorn: "Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall."
Legolas: "A Red sun rises. Blood has been spilled this night."
Èomer: "What business does an elf, a man and a dwarf have in the Riddermark? Speak quickly!"
Pippin: "It's talking Merry. The tree is talking."
Tree: "Tree!! I am no tree! I am an Ent."
Merry: "Treeherder! A Shepherd of the forest."
Pippin: "Don't talk to it Merry. Don't encourage it."
Gollum: "Cold be heart and hand and bone. And cold be travellers far from home. "
Frodo: "He said your life was was a sad story."
Gollum: "They do not see what lies ahead when sun has failed and moon is dead."
Frodo: "You were not so different from a Hobbit once were you? --- Sméagol."
Gandalf: "I am Gandalf the White."
Gandalf: "And I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide."
Gandalf: "The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late, Théoden King."
Grima: "Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear. Lathspell I name him.
Ill news is in ill guest."
Gandalf: "Be silent! Keep your forked tongue behind you teeth. I have not passed through fire
and death to bandy gird words with a witless worm!"
Gandalf: "This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash. All the more potent for he is driven mad
by the fear of Sauron. Ride out and meet him head on. Draw him away from your women and children. You must fight."
Aragorn: "You have 2000 good men riding north as we speak. Èomer is loyal to you.
His men will return and fight for their king."
Aragorn: "Open war is upon you, whether would risk it or not."
Èowyn: "Women of this country learned long ago that those without swords may still die upon them.
I fear neither death nor pain."
Aragorn: What do you fear my lady?"
Èowyn: "A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them. And all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire."
Aragorn: "Minlû pedich nin, i aur hen telitha."
(You told me once...this day would come.)
Arwen: "Ú i vethed...nâ i onnad. Boe bedich go Frodo. Han bâd lîn."
(This is not the end.
It is the beginning. You must go with Frodo. That is your path.)
Aragorn: "Dolen i vâd o nin."
(My path is hidden from me.)
Arwen: "Ae ú-esteliach nad... estelio han. Estelio ammen."
(If you trust nothing else--
trust this. Trust us.)
Saruman: "A new power is rising. It's victory is at hand."
Saruman: "This night, the land will be stained with the blood of Rohan! March to Helm's Deep! Leave none alive!
To war!!! There will be no dawn for Men."
Elrond: "Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you.
No comfort to ease the pain of his passing."
Galadriel: " I amar prestar aen, han mathon ne nen, han mathon ne chae a han noston ned 'wilith."
(The world is changed; I can feel it in the water, I can feel it in the earth, I can smell it in the air.)
Gollum: "Rock and pool is nice and cool, so juicy sweeeet. I only wish to catch a fish, so juicy sweeeeet!"
Legolas: Le abdollen."
(You’re late.)
Legolas: "You look terrible."
Aragorn: "All Isengard is emptied."
Théoden: "How many?"
Aragorn: "Ten thousand strong at least."
Aragorn: "It is an army bred for a single purpose: to destroy the world of Men. They will be here by nightfall."
Théoden: "Where is the horse and the rider. Where is the horn that was blowing."
Théoden: "They have passed like rain on the mountains. Like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the west.
Behind the hills, into shadow. How did it come to this."
Gimli: "Come on. We can take them!"
Aragorn: "It’s a long way."
Gimli: "Toss me."
Aragorn: "What?"
Gimli: "I cannot jump the distance so you have to toss me."
Gimli: "Ehh..Don’t tell the elf."
Aragorn: "Not a word."
Aragorn: "Ride out with me."
Aragorn: "Ride out and meet them."
Théoden: "For death and glory?"
Aragorn: "For Rohan. For your people."
Théoden: "Yes. Yes! The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep one last time.
Théoden: "Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And the red dawn!"
Sam: "It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were.
And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to
the way it was when so much bad had happened."
Sam: "But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come.
And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer."
Sam: "Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why.
But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t.
Because they were holding on to something."
Frodo: "What are we holding on to, Sam?"
Sam: "That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for."
Gandalf: "The battle for Middle-Earth is about to begin. All our hopes now lie with two little hobbits. Somewhere in the wilderness."
Whew!! That took a while;). Well those are my fav. quotes!

I'm currently reading The Two Towers (for the first time); and I just got finished reading the chapter "The Stairs of Cirith Ungol", and, I don't think this is really a "line" but more like a "part", but I really want to mention it, because I love the way it's written and what it means:
"...Sam sat propped against the stone, his head dropping sideways and his breathing heavy. In his lap lay Frodo's head, drowned deep in sleep; upon his white forehead lay one of Sam's brown hands, and the other lay sofly upon his master's breast. Peace was in both their faces..."
That is such a beautiful part. Then when Gollum returns:
"...Gollum looked at them. A strange expression passed over his lean hungry face. The gleam faded from his eyes, and they went dim and grey, old and tired.....and slowly putting out a trembling hand, very cautiously he touched Frodo's knee--but almost the touch was a caress. For a fleeting moment, could one of the sleepers have seen him, they would have thought that they beheld an old weary hobbit, shrunken by the years that had carried him far beyond his time, beyond friends and kin, and the fields and streams of youth, an old starved pitiable thing..."
Oh, that is so sad...."Poor, poor Smeagol"......
That really is a good chapter, actually. It practically has everything: adventure, temporary regret, despair, fear, sadness, then finally hope, and acceptance, love, reminicing, and laughter......and going on.......I cried through the whole thing......
"...Then at a great distance, as if it came out of memories of the Shire, some sunlit early morning, when the day called and doors were opening, he heard Sam's voice speaking. "Wake up, Mr. Frodo! Wake up!" Had the voice added: "Your breakfast is ready," he would hardly have been surprised...".

"If Aragorn survives this war, You will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated and Aragorn made king and all that you hoped for comes true... you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality. Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you, no comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death. An image of the splendor of the kings of men in glory, undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on, in darkness and in doubt. As night falling winter has come without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to you grief, under the fading trees, until all the world has changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent. Arwen... there is nothing for you here, only death."
I dont know why this is my favorite line, or group of lines, I should say. I think its just because it was so beautifully written, so dramatic and bitter-sweet, and it was well spoken by Hugo Weaving as Elrond.

"For Gondor. For Gondor. For Gondor."
Hey, it's not the words. It's the way that Boromir says them.
What a great character! And what a great acting job!
I have always thought that TTT was just a little bit inferior to FOTR. Now I know why. It's the absence of Sean Bean from the second movie that makes the difference. I'm glad to get a little bit of him back in the EE.

a thread for people to share what they thought was their favourite lines in the movie.. if you do not have anything constructive to add Boromir.. then it is not worth posting.
I liked Brad Dourff's wheedling around with Eoywn.. he worked so hard and her "your words are poison" was quite a major put down!!
Aragorns" Open war is upon you whether you like it or not" should have been obvious to anyone but Theoden.. but he was the man who gave us the immortal " I know how to defend my own keep".. not..... so we can forgive him for being a little slow!

I have to say that some of the best lines in the movie are in the Extended Edition. The thing I disliked about TTT is that in FOTR, almost all the scipt was from Tolkien, right outa the books, or very close, but in TTT it seemed that whoever wrote the script thought they were better writers than Tolkien, and very few of the really good quotes from TTT were in the movie, exactly where they should be. But the extended version totally made up for that. Tons of great lines from the books. Here's some of my favorites, from both the theatrical and the extended (no particular order):
- Theoden's "horse and the rider" speech.
- Sam's speech at the end, although I do have a few complaints about it. It is from the books (paraphrased) but it was much better where tolkien placed it, IMO. I like how JRR put it right before shelob's lair, in such a terrible place, and yet simple joys and memories of home overcame the terrible fear that must have been on them. In the movie, it's a good line, but after something good happens. In the books, it's that discussion between frodo and sam that lifts the fear. I love how it says about how frodo laughed, heedlessly of the walls that seemed to be listening, and it was the first time that anything like it had ever been heard since sauron came to mordor. That was truly amazing... Also, in the movie, the way sam ends it with "that there's some good in this world... and it's worth fightin' for." Just doesn't seem very tolkien. Sounds more like a patriotic high school pep rally to me... kinda killed the great speech in my opinion. But then, I'm pretty picky. And I did like it as a whole. I always get goosebumps watching that part. "A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer."
- In the SE when Gandalf says "I am Sauruman. Sauruman as he should have been." and "the coming of merry and pippin will be like the small stones that starts an avalange." or something like that. Also when he is talking to Aragorn on the way to Edoras "that we should seek to destroy it has not even entered their darkest dreams." Gandalf has so many good lines...
- in the SE when Faramir captures Frodo and Sam, and he looks at the dead man, and wonders whether he was really evil, or was decieved or forced into taking that long journey from home... although I liked it better in the books when Sam thought it. It seemed more fitting for Sam. I also like when he shows them to the sewers, and says "the shire must be a wonderful place, where gardeners are held in high honor."
- when sam says "his gardener."
- Gimli - "Bless you laddy!" the only 'funny' line that I didn't despise. also, "what madness drove them there", just because it's probably the only sane thing he says in the whole movie.
there were more that I liked but I can't quite think of them now...

I just love the Faramir/Sam interaction too.
Frodo: And this is Samwise Gamgee
Faramir: Your bodyguard?
Sam: His gardener!
The look on Sams face is fantastic!
Another favourite scene is in Meduseld after Aragorns return. Theoden striding down the hall saying "Let them come" and of course the whole "Where is the horse and rider...." and then "How did it come to this". I will admit to getting teary in that scene
Theoden at Helms Deep:
"So it begins!"
"What can man do against such reckless hate!"

Eomer: "Stay away from the trees!"
Eomer: "Far too long have you watched my sister. Far to long have you haunted her footsteps."
Thats probably one of my favorite scenes as well when the Rohirrim come charging down that hill with Gandalf. You couldn't tell that Eomer had to be my favorite character, now could you...lol lol lol

"Not listening, NOT LISTENING!" --Smeagol to Gollum

January 7th,2004, 11:39 PM
Ok. My favourite:
*Gollum: Don't follow the lights!
*Gandalf: The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late, Theoden King
*Theoden: I know your face.
*Galadriel: In the gathering dark, the will of the Ring grows strong. It works hard now to find
its way back into the hands of men. Men, who are so easily seduced by its power. The young captain of Gondor
has but to extend his hand to take the Ring for his own and the world will fall. He is close now, so close to
achieving his goal
*Faramir: The Ring will go to Gondor
*Theoden: How many?
Aragorn: Ten thousand strong at least.
Theoden: Ten-thousand?!
Aragorn: It is an army bred for a single purpose: to destroy the world of Men. They will be here by nightfall
Theoden: Let them come
*Aragorn: Dago hon, Legolas!
*Theoden: Who am I, Gamling?
*Faramir: Then it is forfeit. Release them
*Theoden: Forth Eorlingas!
*Theoden: So it begins.
And many, many more...but I don't have enough time and characters in my message to write all my fave lines. ;)
