View Full Version : Loose Ends?

Beginning with Fellowship, are there any "loose ends" that you have always been curious about but were never quite attended to completely in the tale? For example, a popular "loose end" is the story of the EntWives. Many Tolkien fans would like resolution to this story. But, of course, there are many others ... some not quite as prominent (i.e. Balin's book that has been previously mentioned).

So, if you have a "loose end" that is driving you crazy ... post in this thread. Someone may have an answer that suit you!

Baldor son of Brego and the unopened door in the Path's of the Dead. We only get a glimpse of who Baldor was and why he entered the Paths (on a druken bet), but we never find out what happened to him (other than his death) in the dark caves nor what was behind the door he died at that was never opened.

Tolkien's OWN final version of the history of the Orcs. In the Sil it is illuded that they come from elven stock, but this is from an 'unfinished' story, and in many of his letters he stated that he wasn't happy with it, and prefered orcs as some variant of human. I'd like to know what Tolkien's final thoughts were on the matter.

I just wanted to respond to your first post Orc. The story of Baldor (or lack thereof) seems to be that element that lets us know that ME is a living and breathing place. I actually had forgotten about that part but I also remembered wondering what sort of fellow Baldor must have been and what were the consequences that led him up to his entry along the Paths. The guy must have been REALLY drunk dontcha think?
