View Full Version : The LotR Exhibition...

Is there anyone lucky enough to have been to the exhibition at the Science Museum?
I went on Monday afternoon. I highly recomend it. The costumes, especially those with embroidery (like Galadriel's and Saruman's).
There were many short films scattered about the exhibition a well. One film showed Lurtz's make-up being applied, a process starting very early in the morning. Lawrence (the actor who plays Lurtz) was shown sleeping (and snoring lol) for much of the time.
There was another film about the wizard's duel inthe first movie. That was also very funny; the doubles were basically jumping up and down and throwing themselves into walls! lol
Among the other films (and therewere at least twenty) was one about Massive, the program used to choreograph computer generated battles. The programmers for it explained that they had programmed each Massive agent with free will, to such an extent that, at one point, thy jst ranaway fromeach other!lol
One of the most interesting parts was the Ringwraiths' ringsand crowns. On the left of a glass case were the crowns and rings we saw worn by them as kings in the Prologue, and to the right were the crowns worn by them as the Nazgul in the wraith world. It really was fascinating; you could actually see how the objects had become gnarled and twisted as the kings were corrupted to become the Ringwraiths.
Among the highlights were various prosthetic ears, feet, teeth and lenses, many objects from Orthanc (including the Palantir, and Saruman's journal, which was hand written and drawn in by Alan Lee), the armour and weaponry of the various cultures, and specially made statuesof the Cave Troll, Treebeard and Lurtz.

Has anyone gone to one of the many costume exhibits? If so, have you taken pictures? I would love to see all the costumes.

I was there! But was way too good a girl and left my camera in the wardrobe...weren't alowed to take piccies but should have cuz noone was looking! I have been thinking I should make a summary from it, but haven't gotten to that...too bad there wasn't even have a leaflet with piccies either! I did get "Weapons and Warefare" and it holds lots of great piccies tho...if I can get my scanner to work I'll post lots of piccies in here! Getting my new pc this afternoon, so that will be a great relief after weeks without one phew!

Arabella:

I went to the one in Los Angeles. Pictures were not allowed and bags, etc. had to be left at the front desk. There were also people standing around, so even if I had managed to get a camera in, I would have been spotted taking photos in an instant. It just wasn't worth the risk.

I was very disappointed in the exhibit. Not in the costumes themselves, they were wonderful. However, there were no descriptions either on signs or as leaflets. The only identification was a tiny sign on the floor  that listed the actor's name and the character's name. These weren't even accurate, as costumes for Pippin and Merry were identified as Billy and Dom, but were clearly not worn by them, but by there scale doubles. I would have loved to have had some quotes from Ngilla, a description of fabrics, etc. However, nothing!! Bah!

The costumes that were on display were: Aragorn's coronation, Arwen's coronation dress, Merry and Pippin returning to the Shire, Gondorian citadel guard, Faramir and Eowyn coronation, Galadriel Grey Havens, generic Orc, and the King of the Dead. (I hope I didn't leave anyone out.)

That's just wrong that they don't let you take pictures! I mean, how are people supposed to remember that they were there? Great memories should be photographed! That's awful.

Yeah, I was disappointed, but what can you do. I was just glad I could see them.

Even worse, though, was the lack of signage, descriptions, context. Just plain, bland mannequins with no hair or facial features. Nothing.

I thought Aragorn's coronation outfit was wonderful, with a black velvet cloak edged in silver leaf embroidery. His crown was also spectacular and I was dying to get my hands on it. One good thing about the exhibit was that you could approach the costumes quite closely (at least those in front). They were not behind glass.

However, Faramir's was even more spectacular, with his cloak a deep midnight blue velvet and a blue shirt underneath. As for the dresses, neither Arwen's or Galadriel's looked all that spectacular without those lovely ladies. Eowyn's was the most attractive. Both cloak and gown were of gold silk/satin (oh, don't I wish for a description!) with gold thread enbroidery. Really lovely.

I don't suppose anyone out there could tell me if in the Two Towers exhibit last year Haldir's armor was shown and if so, what it looked like up close. (Of course I have seen pictures.....)

I have a question where is the exibits? What city and state is it in?

What exhibit is this? It sure doesn't sound like the one I saw in London!

Celeir of Lorien

The exhibit I saw in Los Angeles is something done every year at the Institute of Fashion and Design Marketing. They have a showing of costumes from Oscar-nominated as well as other popular films. This year's included LoTR, Last Samurai, Master and Commander, Haunted Mansion, Cold Mountain, and a number of others.

This is not the same as the LoTR exhibit that has been in London and is currently in Singapore, I believe. I think it is then headed to Boston. I am hoping that it will eventually come to L.A. Anyone know, perchance?

Cuiel Rilwen
March 12th,2004, 07:30 PM
Ah...well that explains it lol! I was quite shocked that someone could not enjoy the London Exhibit, but your explanations about it kinda gave me a hint that it wasn't the same one! Dunno where it's going after Boston tho, sorry!

If any of you who weren't able to see the costumes would like to see high quality pictures I found a costume site that has TONS of them!

WOW they sure have a lot of piccies! I have been there quite often, but not on this page...really loaded with stuff! Great link Arabella! Whatever you want to find I'm sure it's there...and no need for crying over not bringing the camera in anymore!

Oh no you can't cancel...you'd be regretting that forever! We fiigured they'd be taking camera's and cellphones off us at the entrance anyway so we left them in the wardrobe...but they didn't and we shouldn't have!!! I say put it in your pocket and say you forgot or didn't know if you get stopped!

I don't suppose you're gonna show them to a large public and make heaps of money on it anyway!

I've been wondering the same thing, Lady C! ;)

I have a small digicam that will fit in either my very small purse or in my pocket. It has a museum setting so it will take photos without a flash. I certainly don't want to get caught, but may try to slip it in with me.

Now if my camera just happens to be in my pocket...and I just happen to accidently take it out ....and just happen to accidently touch the button and it just happens to accidently take a picture...that wouldn't be my fault now would it...lol lol lol

I wonder if a camera would qualify as a pendant on a chain... ;)

lol I'll be there in 11 days...I'm so excited. I will definitely see what I can do. I had some friends that have already seen the exhibit. They didn't take a camera (and wished they had) but they said others had them and no one said anything when they took pictures. I'm hoping that holds true for me as well...

Just 11 days...just 11 days...just 11 days...lol

I was in Science Museum of London November 31st 2003. Unbelievable exhibition, indeed! I wish I could see it again... :( Miss it so much. But I could have a chance to see it again in Sydney, if we're leaving to New Zealand then. Good chance, actually :)

This exhibition is coming to Sydney's Powerhouse museum in late December 2004 to 31 March 2005. Will this be the same exhibition as the one described in that article? Because if it is, I have reason to be even more excited about it! :p

 The Exhibit was awesome! I loved every minute of it. The only downside of it was that "Absolutely No Pictures" were allowed. There were so many security guards watching and walking around that sneaking a picture wasn't even an option. Although I managed to snag one of the "One Ring" in a dark room...lol lol lol

It was a trip well worth the time and money. I spent a little over 3 hours in there and it wasn't enough.

I've posted some of the pictures that I did take in Boston and have them on my LiveJournal if anyone cares to look...

I thought you would hehehe! Too bad with the tough security, there was no such thing in London...or perhaps I didn't notice because I was in such awe!

Your piccies are wonderful, the front of the building looks great and the Argonath are very impressive. Nice to see piccies of a city one has never visited too! I really enjoyed your description of Boromir! And yes, I felt very lucky too for having the posibility to view the costumes close up, such a treat to see all the wonderful details!

Go have a look folks!

I went and saw the Exhibition at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum a couple of days ago, and it was FANTASTIC!

The detail they put into everything, the weapons, the costumes, the armour, everything is just phenomonal! As everyone else has said, no camera's were allowed, although our bags did not need to be left behind, so it was very possible to take one. But there were a few security cameras around so I was afraid to take the chance  But I did get to touch the WitchKing's and Legolas's clothes :hyper: :hyper: Me and a friend made sure no one was around, then climbed onto a base thing that was around them and touched it!! LOTR Fanatic? Never! lol Hey, it's the closest I'll ever get to Orlando lol

Anywho, the only thing that was disappointing I guess was that I expected to see The One Ring with the writing on it. But they only had the Gold Band. I thought they might have two, one without, but the other with it  There was only one more thing that I was disappointed about, but it doesn't really relate to the Exhibition itself. When you come out, there is a LOTR Shop to take home 'your piece of Middle Earth'. Now everything there was so expensive! A lot of the merchandise you can find in ordinary shops, and yet, even that was more expensive because it was after you came out of the Exhibition. It seemed as though they had put up the prices, just because they knew a lot of people going there would be huge fans, willing to spend that amount of money. There were only 2 things I could find (And I searched the entire shop) that were under $15 dollars! It just felt like to me that they were robbing us, just cause we were fans :(

Apologies for the long post, but I just wanted to say how great it was, and also to get that off my chest about the crazy prices  Anyways, anyone who hasn't seen it yet, really should! It's the best experience!

Cuiel Rilwen
February 6th,2005, 02:12 PM
No need for apologies hon, this is the kind of posts us wantssssss in here! :)

I do agree that the only disappointing thing was the shop. Not only because the stuff was so expensive...actually comming from Norway the prices seemed pretty normal to me hehehe everything is expensive here...tho I noticed the prices were higher than in the stores outside the exhibit. But I thought I would find jewelery and helmets and weapons and such stuff so well...nothing like it and I was planning on getting some!

Lady of the Rings
February 8th,2005, 11:26 AM
Hehe, thanks Cuil!

lol Well here prices are so so, but like you said, the prices in the LOTR Shop were a lot more than in stores outside the Exhibit. I don't know why they do that  The only jewellery I saw was the One Ring in silver or gold, I'm not sure what the prices were though :ring:
