I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm quite excited for the November 5th release of the LotR Weapons and Warfare book. I'm assuming it will be a trove of knowledge concerning the creation, construction, design methods and completion of many of the swords. I'm also interested to see what else they incorporate into the book to discuss armour types, race specific weapon designs and tactics, and a whole bunch of other interesting tidbits we'll all relish.
What are you thoughts, or expectations on what this book will offer us?

This may be off the book a bit, but I heard that the Elven armor worn in the prologue of FotR was very hard to move in. Do you think they will talk about look over function? I mean, even if it is a movie who would design armor that you could not move in (even if it does look cool)?

Here's what Amazon.com has on it:
Lord of the Rings: Weapons and Warfare (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0618390995/qid=1067550927/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-1611915-1779849?v=glance&s=books#product-details)
for your amusement, check out the paperback price under the picture. Amazon states a list price of 10.95 but they are selling it for $13.27....
Not much detail on the contents though. I'll probably thumb through it as soon as I see it on the shelf somewhere.

:whoohoo: YAY I got it! it's fab folks, :naughty: pretty much to delight yourselves in the photos that had never been seen (like Isildur's sword) and armour that we are expecting to see (The Mouth of Sauron)
But for technical reference is not particularly enlightening, tho I must say it is a must have:thumbs:

Some pretty interesting stuff on the Official Site. Here's the link to the specific page http://www.lordoftherings.net/legend/weapons/
The introduction discusses the extracting of ores and the process of forging the blade. So for those of us allready educated in this procedure, then you can just skip on to the next few pages which deal directly with Middle Earth.

OK...no offense but,
>>> Isildur's sword<<<Is not really his sword. Is Elendil's sword, when he died he used it against Sauron...Am I right?
After that the Narsil was just shars, then Anduril, Flame of the West, forged by the elves in Rivendell using the shards of Narsil is the sword of the King of Gondor.
Please correct me if im wrong;)

I bought this book while in Scotland,(not published in Norway when I left!) It's so incredibly beautiful and informative! I love how it's divided into chapters of races, their weapons, armours; places, battles; all the background info on each race, character and location, maps and ofcourse the wonderful piccies!
It's clearly my most treasured book from the films! Also it is a powerful reference to anyone who, like me, went to the LotR-exhibit and was disapointed that there were no leaflet/brochure to take home, to help you remember all the maginificent stuff!

Quite a good book. A few things disipointed. (No more than sketch for Haldir's sword) But much of the information and maps gave me a better understanding of the clutures they were creating. The Lorien elves for instance. In some cases the sudo-historical flavor it is written in is rather fakey but on the whole this is certainly the best book to come out of the films.

Hmm kind of, well, its really the sword of the king of Gondor so when Elendil died Isildur became the king automatically(inheritance stuff) so it belonged to him :) :p

Im not actually sure, sorry Eomund. I got it as an xmas pressie and it is being lent to a friend at the moment so i cant check the back. :read:
I absolutely love this book, its simply marvellous. It's not too technical so that people like me :p who have little knowledge of the names of all the parts in armour would be turned away or put off. There's even a glossary with all the names used explained. I really recommend this to every lotr fan, especially those interested in the design of middle earth.
I agree Cuiel, the book seems to go well with the feel of the lotr exhibition. I first saw the exhibition in Wellington, NZ, but i saw it in London a few weeks back after reading the book and i must say that i appreciated the work of the costumes and armour that i saw even more than i did the first time i went. :knight:

Actually you are kinda wrong, but not too much. Obviously Isildur have his own sword (books and movie). When Elendil died the shards of Narsil pass to Isildur and then it pass as a heirloom to every one that follows in his blood line.
Now, i think that previously they were refering to the sword used by Isildur on the movies, That sword can be seem on the TFOR extended dvd's art gallery. The sword of Isildur is pretty much like Narsil, but the hilt is golden and to me it appears that this sword is one-handed and kinda short in comparison with Narsil. The name of the Isildur's sword is unknown to me.

February 10th,2004, 02:21 PM
What was the name of his sword if he had one, what weapons did he use, what kind of armor had he?
Mithrandir
February 18th,2004, 11:04 PM
Here we go
Elrond's sword name is Hadhafang he carried in the Last Alliance and was handed down to him by his father Earendil
His armor, was pretty much alike Gil-Galad's armor and was in high rank shaped (like more detailed etc.)
Eomund
February 19th,2004, 05:20 AM
Cool, so Elrond was better armoured than Gil-Galad! I knew that his sword began with a H but I didnt know on! Thank you, Mithrandir!!!!

Yes, and other question. Did elvish archers(Those in the FoTR prologue) have also another weapon besides their bows???
Elfdaughter
March 14th,2004, 03:15 AM
Yes. Swords, spears, polearms - more like glaives - and they used their sheilds as an offensive weapon.
