How did you find out about Lord of the Rings?

I found out about it around a year and a half ago. My friend at school liked it, and I asked her about it, and she told me some things about it. I tried to read it, but I couldn't, I didn't like it that much, plus I thought it was kind of boring. When the movie came out, we went to see it, and I liked it, so I decided to read the book again, but still, it was boring. So, I decided to read the Two Towers, and skip the Fellowship of the Ring, since I already knew what happened. When I read TTT, I absolutly loved it, so I read RoTK, and loved it. Right now I'm reading the Hobbit, then I'm going to read the Sil.

Let's see.... I saw the animated vesion of the Hobbit when I was little... and it scared me! I also saw the animated version of Rotk at around the same age and it scared me even more! I bought a copy of The Fellowship years ago........ but I always sort of avoided reading it... I think its because I had those old tramatizing images in my mind....

Then I saw the movie and absolutely fell in love with it. I began to read the book series the night I got home and have read it several times since.

Nessa, in the movie The Hobbit, I saw it too when I was little. Vividly remember Gollum's freaky eyes going bizerk.

I knew it existed for ages and had even saw half of the animated film of lotr. About four months before Fellowship came out I read it from a really old copy that my mum had until I got to book 2 then I got the new version for christmas and finished it in April.

Well, my mum read me The Hobbit when I was quite young, then I read it again myself quite a few times. My mum said I would like LOTR (we have 4 copies of it-2 illustrated, an old hardback and a modern one in three parts) anyway so it was sitting there under my nose, but it looked so big. It was one of those books i was meanin 2 read but just didnt. Then about a year and a half ago (while i was on study leave) my friend ali was readin it and he kept going on about how good it was. So i finally decided to read it and i finished it in about a week. I just loved it so much. I think i've read it about 5 or 6 times since then :)

When the Fellowship of the Ring came out, i had never heard of Tolkien (matter of fact, i didn't even know that the movie was based on the books - kinda sad, isn't it!) But i ended up going to see it with both my parents (who heard it was good and wanted to see it), my brother, and one of my friends.
I liked the movie but was like "okay, that ending was kind of sudden! Does Frodo and Sam get to Mordor or not?!" and then my friend who had read the Hobbit told me that it's a trilogy (i'm such a dumb blond! lol) She told me how good it was and that i should read it, and i was thinking of it but never got around to it.

Then just this summer The Hobbit was on my HS reading list and LotR was on the Honors English reading list. So i read The Hobbit first and loved it! Then i had to go and buy it (since i had only rented it from the library) and the entire LotR set too! After reading FotR, i had to go watch the movie again (luckily it was still playing in some theatres) and dragged some of my "Honors English" friends out to see it. I love The Lord of the Rings! :read:

My friends told me about Tolkien's book when I was 16 years old as was getting into AD&D. But I only decided to buy and read the books some years later.

It began with The Hobbit over a decade ago.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and The Silmarillion soon followed afterwards.

Thats great that you two got into reading the books that way, but I would definately recommend the Fellowship, its an excellent book, and I find that once you've finished the series it doesn't seem boring at all.

And if you thought it was a bit dull... you might have trouble getting through The Silmarillion. I'm not saying it was boring, but its a bit hard to follow and has a tendency to be a little slow. However, I enjoyed it greatly and hope you do, too.

lol There is a lot of names and so on.... I've only read it once, along with History of Middle Earth 1 & 2! :o Great stories, but they're basicly stories from the Silmarillion with slight differences and different names. Now thats confusing! lol

But great books none the less, and I'm straying off topic, sorry.

When I was 15, my English teacher had the whole class read Fellowship, but no one really liked it. I didn't really like the first half of Fellowship, but as soon as they got to Rivendell I was hooked. My English teacher really liked it so I could talk about it with him, but whenever any of the people in my English class saw me reading it they gave me a look like I had the worst taste in the world. I think only one other person in my class actually liked it.

SHAME! I hope it isn't the same for me! My english teacher for next year has hinted that she may include some media studies...and lotr studies...into the year's course...if no-one else is interested i'll be sooooooo annoyed and disappointed! mecry

I wish I had read it when I was in school. ```````(marks to the left are my cat saying hello). I found the book slow to start. Once they set out on their journey (and I skip the 2 Bombadil chapters - yawn), it's fine. I don't have any trouble with the slow beginning now; but at first I was like, "Oh my God!"

o dear. looks like i'm the only one who liked the beginning of the fellowship. The nazgul really freaked me out and the Old Forest was majorly creepy AND the barrow-wight (this may of course have something to do with the fact i've just started reading it again but still) Though I have to admit i look forward to when Strider appears

I like it all...but my preference lies later on in the tale (ROTK ROTK ROTK)!

I agree though...i do look forward to bree...it seemed to change everything around for me (plus we get sam's apple throwing skills!) lol

The barrows sequence is SO ****** SCARY! I got really freaked out when frodo sees the sword over their necks...i distinctly remember skreeching in the history lesson i was reading it under the table in! :nono: lol

lol that's not gud. I really love the battles and stuff and all the Aragorn stuff in ROTK. FOTR isn't my fave overall but i still really like the beginning. i was just reading that Barrow downs yesterday nite, it always freaks me out. 'specially wen the hand starts crawling about:o I just love all bits wid Strider in-he's so cool and I now have film Strider in my head as well:loveyou:

I agree, Bree is the start of the great adventure for me. Sometimes I skip through the Barrow Downs and Tom Bombadil (though they are good, just sometimes I don't feel like reading them again). When Strider appears, it is just the best characte introduction. He was what kept me interested until the story devoloped more. I love when they read Gandalf's letter asnd they have they poem about him (which I love!) and then it turns out that Bilbo writes it. Sorry, got carried away, but I really like that whole scene at the Prancing Pony.

it is a really gud read once you get Shadow of the Past out of the way which is a bit dragging. Tom Bombadil's plain strange but the Old Forest itself is freaky. I'm really enjoying reading it again. I get scared of the Black Riders:blush:

I've read up to the part when Tom B. asks Frodo about the ring... I actually liked the chapter Shadow of the Past, after I saw the movie, of course ;) I thought it was a bit boring before I saw it.

I liked the book FOTR the best. i liked how all the characters got introduced and how its starts. Even though a lot of people think that the bigginning is boring I like the long expectede party chapter and I like when they meet the elves in the Old forest and especially Bree. Then of course I just love the rest of the book except for the ending.

I have known of The Lord of the Rings nearly all my life. My dad read it and The Hobbit not long before I was born. When I was young there were always books of Tolkien-related paintings lying around, and it was probably largely from these that I became familiar with the characters and the story. Also, my dad used to read out selected passages from The Hobbit when I was about three. Not long after, I got to know the Bakshi film off by heart (and, later, the BBC Radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings). My mum read the entire book out loud to the family when I was, perhaps, seven or eight, and since then I have been reading it on a regular basis.

Tinwë: I can't believe you found The Fellowship of the Ring boring! It's got hills and fields, and Black Riders, and psychopathic trees, and beer, and mushrooms, and that bewildered fox. What more can you ask for in a book?! Hope you're enjoying it this time...

I've never finished the book before, so I'm not saying that the WHOLE THING is boring, I just think that the first few chapters that I've read was. I doubt that the whole thing is boring. Like I said, after I finish reading the Silmarillion, then I'm going to finish reading FoTR
