um... because they're associated with the dark forces, Sauron etc (Sauron used vampire bats things... Luthien sneaked in the skin of Thuringwethil)... and they were around... I think they are mentioned couple of times in the book... the fire attracted them in Mirkwood and Smaug woke up some...

From psychological point of view Tolkien uses all kinds of scary stuff like spiders to keep the attention

If we want to analyse the book, they are the antipode of the eagles...

I really can't understand what d you mean "why" there were bats

I mean, why did they fly out in great swarms over the battle field to accompany the Orc army? Back then it didn't make much sense to me. And as far as I know there wasn't much mention of them in Middle-earth in the other books. But then again I've only read the LOTR, the Hobbit and part of the Silmarilion, so I wouldn't know much:) But no bats were mention in the LOTR books as far as I can remember...

I guess it makes sense as the bats are always associated with the night, the evil, like the wolves (save for Batman but he's hardly the standart heh)... we know that ThurIngwëthil could turn into bat from the silm...

No bats in LotR... though Pippin does say "Very big, I think, really; but in the glass they looked like bats wheeling round the tower." describing what he say in the Palantir so they knew bats

i think it was just a lil thang to make it scary for kids. but also i does make snse, bats live in caves, goblins live in caves, therfore big goblin army comes out of caves chances are they gonna wkae up the bats. plus the may have goten alllot of there food from either the orcs themselves(if they were blood suckers) or from wot the orcs leave lying arround. so ur a bat sitting in ur cave, a big army wakes u up, u mite go for curiousity to c whats happenin, or u could think big army......big abbatle lots of stuf lying around to eat

well actually bats do that allot(well maybe a little simpler version of it), all scavenger types do that sort of thang

actually i was watchin a progrm on tv yesterday about these bats in Southern usa, and every night the whole lot of them, about 5million leave these caves and go for food, liek 5000000 bats all flying in one direction, ah scary. anyway it just made me think oif this thread

Hmmm...super glad Ilive in the NORTHERN part of the states, where bats are small, squeaky, and harmless. Not to mention easy to nail with a tennis racket if necessary.

That's prolly what they did in ME before the tennis rackets were invented. lol
Let's stick to their bats here ok?
